Chapter 199 The Final Gate
Chapter 199 The Final Gate
The sky above Lagos had changed.
For the first time since the battle began, there were no explosions. No alien vessels. No black shadows. Only an enormous golden circle hanging above the city. The Interworld Gate. I stood beneath it with Harper beside me.
Her fingers were intertwined with mine. For a moment, I allowed myself to breathe. We had survived the Architects. We had survived the Void. We had survived things I once believed belonged only in nightmares. But the silence didn’t feel peaceful.
It felt like the calm before another storm. Harper looked at me. “What are you thinking?” I glanced at her. “That I’m tired.” She smiled. “Me too.”
“I thought we’d have more time.” “We still might.” I looked at the Gate. “Do you really believe that?” She squeezed my hand. “I believe in you.” Those four words were enough to steady me.
Behind us, Adrian, Mara, Aria, and Amara stood together. They weren’t my siblings. They weren’t family by blood. But after everything we’d experienced, they had become something just as important. My allies. My friends. My family by choice.
Kael approached us. “The Gate is almost stable.” I frowned. “Almost?” “We’re missing one thing.” “What?” “Consent.”
Mara raised an eyebrow. “Consent?” Kael nodded. “The Gate was created through the combined frequencies, but it cannot remain open through force.”
Aria looked at the glowing circle. “It needs a connection.” “Exactly.” Amara stared at the Gate. “Between worlds.” Kael shook his head. “Between people.”
I looked at Harper. “What does that mean?” Kael pointed toward the city. “The Gate needs humanity to choose it.” I frowned. “How?” “Every person connected to it must make the same decision.” “To do what?” “To remain connected.”
Harper stepped forward. “And if they don’t?” “The Gate collapses.” “And Earth?” Kael’s expression darkened. “Earth becomes isolated again.” I looked at the city. People had gathered everywhere. They were frightened. But they were also waiting and waiting for us.
I stepped toward the edge of the platform. A communication system activated. My voice could now reach the entire city. I didn’t know what to say.
For once, there was no battle plan. No strategy. No weapon. Only the truth. “My name is Liam Carter.” The city became silent. “I don’t know if you can see me.” “But if you can hear me, I need you to understand something.”
I looked at Harper. She nodded. “We’ve been fighting for this world for longer than we ever imagined.” “We’ve seen fear.” “We’ve seen destruction.” “But we’ve also seen something stronger.”
I looked at the people below. “We’ve seen strangers save strangers.” “We’ve seen families refuse to abandon each other.” “We’ve seen people lose everything and still find a reason to hope.” My voice shook. “Humanity isn’t perfect.”
A few people laughed softly. “But it doesn’t have to be.” “We only have to choose what we want to become.” Harper stepped beside me. “And we don’t have to choose alone.” Her voice traveled through the city. “That’s what we’ve learned.”
“We’re stronger when we stand together.” The Gate began glowing brighter. Kael looked at his readings. “It’s responding.” I turned toward Harper. “Keep going.” She smiled. “I was planning to.”
She looked at the city. “Choose connection.” One light appeared below us. Then another. Then hundreds. Thousands. Millions.
Across Lagos, people raised their hands. The Gate expanded. Golden light spread across the sky. Adrian’s crimson energy joined it. Mara’s silver energy followed. Aria’s pure light filled the center. Amara’s white-gold frequency completed the circle.
The Gate stabilized. Kael stared at the readings. “It’s working.” I smiled. “We did it.” Then the Gate suddenly flickered. Harper looked at me. “What happened?” Kael’s face changed. “Something is approaching.”
The golden light began darkening. A massive shadow appeared beyond the Gate. Not the Void. Something else. A figure stepped through. Tall. Human-looking. Silver hair. Blue eyes.
He looked directly at us. Kael immediately raised his weapon. “No.” I looked at him. “You know him?” Kael’s face had gone pale. “Everyone knows him.” The figure smiled. “I am Orion.”
The name meant nothing to me. But Kael’s reaction told me everything. “Who is he?” Kael whispered, “The First Architect.” The chamber fell silent. Orion stepped forward. “The Gate has finally opened.” I moved Harper behind me. “You aren’t welcome here.” Orion smiled. “That isn’t your decision.” “It is now.” His eyes moved toward the five frequencies.
“Do you know what you’ve created?” I tightened my fists. “A chance.” “No.” His smile disappeared. “You’ve created a door.” He raised his hand. The Gate trembled. “And every door has a master.”
The five frequencies suddenly reacted. Adrian dropped to one knee. Mara cried out. Aria grabbed her head. Amara stumbled backward. I felt an unbearable pressure in my chest.
Harper caught my arm. “Liam!” “I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine.” I looked at Orion. He was smiling again. “You carry the Golden Frequency,” I said nothing. “It was always the strongest.” “Then why are you here?” “Because I need it.”
Harper stepped beside me. “You’ll have to get through us.” Orion looked at her. “Harper Hayes.” My heart stopped. He knew her name. “You know who she is?” “Of course.”
He looked at her calmly. “She is the reason your frequency has remained stable.” Harper frowned. “What are you talking about?” Orion smiled. “Love is an extraordinary stabilizer.”
I stepped forward. “Don’t talk about her.” “You misunderstand.” His eyes narrowed. “I’m not threatening her.” “Then what do you want?” “The Five.” He looked at Adrian, Mara, Aria, and Amara. “All of you.”
Amara shook her head. “No.” Orion’s expression hardened. “You don’t understand what you are.” “We understand enough.” I raised my hand. Golden energy filled the chamber. Harper stood beside me. The other four frequencies rose. Orion looked at us.
For the first time, his expression showed something other than confidence. Fear. “Interesting.” He took one step backward. “You’ve learned to resist.” I smiled. “We’ve learned something better.” “What?” I looked at Harper. “To trust each other.”
The five frequencies combined. The Gate exploded with light. Orion disappeared into the brightness. But before he vanished, his voice echoed through the chamber. “You’ve only delayed the inevitable.”
The Gate slammed shut. Silence returned. Everyone stared at one another. Harper looked at me. “Is he gone?” I shook my head. “I don’t know.”
Kael looked toward the sealed Gate. “He isn’t.” “Then where is he?” Kael’s eyes moved to me. “Inside.” My blood ran cold. I looked at my palm.
A tiny black mark had appeared beneath the golden glow. Harper saw it. “Liam…” The mark pulsed. Once. Twice. Then a voice whispered inside my head. “I’ll see you soon.” I closed my fist.
Whatever was coming next, I knew one thing. I wasn’t facing it alone. Not anymore. Harper took my hand. And together, we stared at the Gate.
