Chapter 16 Alliances and Shadows

Chapter 16 Alliances and Shadows
The morning light in Raelthorn felt heavy. Dusty gold streaked through the tall windows of the estate, highlighting cracks in stone and glimmers of magic left smoldering from the previous night’s battle. I ran my fingers along the runes of the wards, feeling them pulse faintly beneath my touch. They were still weak from the infiltration, stretched to their limits, but intact, my Null Blood had saved them, and in doing so, I had saved the estate.

Yet, the victory felt hollow.

“Alenya,” Thane’s voice broke through the silence, low and rough with exhaustion. He stepped into the room, fragment dimmed but ever-present, casting faint light across the floor. “We need to address the fallout.”

I nodded. The betrayal had been subtle, insidious, and it shook me more than any attack had. Someone from the inner circle, someone I trusted, had turned on us. The thought of it churned uneasily in my stomach.

“Where do we even start?” I asked, voice small.

“Strategically,” Thane said, eyes sharp. “We find out who else might be compromised. We strengthen alliances. And we make it clear that Null Blood isn’t just a weapon to be tested, it’s a force that demands respect.”

I swallowed, the hollow thrumming faintly beneath my skin. Respect, or fear, it didn’t matter which. The world was learning that I couldn’t be controlled.

By mid-morning, the inner council had convened. Wolves, witches, and even representatives from the fae gathered in the grand hall, their expressions guarded. Each one carried a subtle energy of caution. None trusted me yet, not fully.

Thane stood beside me, eyes flicking over each delegate, his fragment pulsing softly, tethered to my own energy. The bond flared faintly, a quiet warning, but also a signal of unity. I drew a deep breath.

“This,” Thane began, voice carrying across the hall, “is the result of an infiltration attempt. Null Blood and I stopped it. But it exposes weaknesses. And it exposes the fact that some among us cannot be trusted.”

Murmurs ran through the room, sharp and wary.

I stepped forward, heart pounding, unsure if I was ready to speak to these powerful beings, some of whom had lived centuries. “We cannot wait for threats to reach us,” I said, voice growing steadier as I felt the hollow pulse beneath me. “We have to act. We have to identify weaknesses. And we have to build alliances that are strong enough to withstand them.”

A hush fell over the room.

“You speak with authority,” one fae delegate said finally, eyes glittering. “For someone so young.”

“I’ve survived what many of you couldn’t even imagine,” I said. “And I will not allow Raelthorn, or anyone I care about, to fall because of hesitation or fear.”

Thane’s hand brushed against mine, small, grounding, a silent tether. The bond flared gently in response, and I felt a calm clarity settle over me.

The next few hours were spent in tense negotiations. Witches demanded reassurances, fae wanted guarantees, and some wolves bristled at the idea of taking advice from someone so new.

But gradually, alliances began to form. Minor factions pledged support, promising intelligence and backup in exchange for Null Blood protection and guidance. I realized then that my blood was more than a shield, it was a symbol, a catalyst that could unite disparate supernatural forces under a common goal.

Thane never left my side, his presence steady, fragment dimmed but vigilant. Every time my confidence faltered, he would brush against me, tethering me to reality, to the bond, to control.

And the bond wasn’t just comforting, it was empowering.

By evening, we had identified several suspects in the inner circle who might have been compromised. Surveillance through wards and magical detection revealed subtle traces of tampering, messages rerouted, minor attacks disguised as accidents, and whispers among the staff.

One name kept appearing. Darven. A wolf I had trained with, who had seemed loyal, but whose energy signatures now matched anomalies in the wards.

“Darven,” Thane said, jaw tight. “We’ll handle him carefully. Confrontation could be dangerous.”

I nodded, hollow pulsing faintly. “I want to do it,” I said quietly. “I want to confront him, not just sit and wait.”

Thane studied me for a long moment, molten eyes flickering with the warmth of the bond. “Are you ready?”

“Yes,” I said, and I meant it.

We found Darven near the stables, pretending to check the perimeter. His shift to wolf form was smooth, predatory, but the Null Blood recognized his intent immediately. He froze as I stepped forward, the hollow flaring subtly, energy rippling outward like invisible chains.

“You betrayed us,” I said, voice steady, echoing across the stone courtyard.

He sneered, claws flexing. “You’re just a girl with a fancy name and a freak of blood. You think you can stop me?”

“I already have,” I said. The hollow pulsed sharply. Darven staggered, suddenly unbalanced, his energy rebounding against the Null Blood barrier.

Thane appeared at my side, fragment igniting briefly in warning, ready to strike, but I held up a hand.

“I’ll handle this,” I said. The bond flared, molten warmth tethering us together, steadying my pulse, giving me confidence.

Darven’s snarl faltered. “What… what are you?”

“Null Blood,” I said simply. “And I am the anchor. You will not threaten Raelthorn again.”

The hollow expanded, enveloping him, rendering his attacks ineffective. He staggered, breath ragged, and finally shifted back into human form, hands raised in surrender.

“I… I didn’t…” he stammered, eyes wide. “I was promised.....”

“Promises mean nothing when they endanger my home,” I said. The hollow pulsed once more, a final warning, before retracting. He sank to his knees, defeated, powerless.

Thane’s hand brushed mine briefly. The bond flared faintly, warm and approving.

\---------------------------------------------------

That night, as we returned to the estate, the weight of the day pressed heavily on me. The betrayal had been exposed. Alliances had strengthened. But the prophecy pulsed faintly in the back of my mind. Anchor to fractured stars. Null Blood rising. Storm to follow.

I realized then that this was only the beginning. I was no longer just a student, or a pawn. I was a force, central to the shifting tides of Vaelora. And the world, with all its wolves, witches, fae, and divine entities, would be watching my next move closely.

Thane didn’t speak as we walked. He simply kept pace beside me, fragment dimmed but ever-present. The bond hummed faintly, a tethering pulse that reminded me I wasn’t alone.

“You did well today,” he said quietly, finally breaking the silence. “More than I could have hoped for.”

“I just did what had to be done,” I said, though a small part of me swelled with pride.

“No,” he said, voice soft, molten warmth in his gaze. “You did more than survive. You led. And you inspired. That… is something rare.”

I swallowed, heart tight. The bond pulsed gently, warming, tethering, insistent. I could feel the subtle heat of his fragment brushing against my skin even when dimmed, a quiet reminder that he was here. Always.

“And the prophecy?” I asked, voice small. “What does it mean for me?”

He studied me for a long moment. “It means that the world will try to break you. That everyone, even those you trust, will test you. But it also means you are more than a weapon. You are a catalyst. And I will be here, every step of the way.”

The bond flared gently, molten and steady. I leaned against him, finally allowing myself a small measure of
relief. For the first time, I didn’t feel like a target. I felt like a player.

And tomorrow, the storm would rise again.

But this time… I was ready.
