Chapter 14 Tempest Rising

Chapter 14 Tempest Rising
The sun had barely pierced the horizon when the first warning came, flashes of light across the valley, faint tremors underfoot, and the unmistakable smell of magic, sharp, pungent, predatory.

I bolted upright in my bed, heart pounding, the hollow thrumming insistently beneath my skin.

“Thane,” I whispered, leaping from the mattress.

He was already there, hands brushing past the air as he focused on the surge. His fragment pulsed, molten and erratic, reacting to something far bigger than either of us.

“They’re coordinated,” he said immediately, jaw tight. “Three packs, a group of witches, and… something else. Something divine.”

I swallowed hard. “All at once?”

He nodded. “They want to see how far you can go, and if I’ll break.”

My stomach tightened. The bond flared immediately. Every pulse of his fragment, every surge of the Null Blood, resonated through me like an earthquake. I had trained for control. I thought I was ready.

I wasn’t.

\---------------------------------------------------

We reached the training grounds, where the open field outside Raelthorn had been transformed into a defensive labyrinth of wards and runes. Wolves patrolled in pairs, shifting constantly, while witches hovered just beyond the wards, measuring energy fluctuations with every twitch of their hands.

“Positions,” Thane said. “Stay within the Null Blood field. Don’t step outside unless necessary.”

I nodded, gripping the edges of the wards with fingers that tingled with anticipation.

The first wave came in silence. Figures emerged from the treeline, shifting from human to wolf midair, eyes glowing like molten gold, bodies radiating authority and threat.

I didn’t flinch.

The hollow surged.

Every attack aimed at me slowed, faltered, fizzled. I didn’t have to think about it, it just happened. The energy radiated outward, deflecting the minor strikes and knocking the attackers off balance.

Thane moved like fire incarnate beside me, fragment flaring with each strike. He was strong, precise, unstoppable, but even he was stretched thin. Every uncontrolled flare made the bond react, pulling me into the chaos whether I wanted it or not.

“Alenya!” he shouted over the roar of shifting magic. “Now! Focus!”

I concentrated. The Null Blood pulsed, expanding, anchoring his fragment. He exhaled sharply, the flare dimming slightly, though the effort left both of us trembling.

“You’re amazing,” he growled, eyes locking on mine. “But this isn’t over!”

\----------------------------------------------------

The second wave was worse. Witches rained curses from the treeline, each strike designed to bypass human resistance. Thane intercepted most with his fragment, but one slipped through, a blade of divine energy aimed straight at him.

I acted without thinking.

The hollow expanded violently, intercepting the blade. It didn’t just stop it, it absorbed the energy and redirected it, sending the divine strike back toward the source. One witch staggered, glowing veins in her arms collapsing as her magic unraveled.

Breath caught in my throat. I did that.

Thane reached for me immediately, grounding both of us. “You.... this... You’re incredible. But it’s dangerous. You’re pushing your limits!”

“I know,” I said, pulse racing. “But if I don’t....”

“If you don’t,” he interrupted, cupping my cheek, “I’ll burn with you.”

The heat of his fragment flared in resonance with the hollow, making the bond scream between us. My knees went weak, and for a heartbeat, I forgot everything else, strategy, danger, politics, forgot the enemies circling us like predators. All that existed was the pulse of him through me, the molten warmth and raw power of connection.

Then a howl split the air.

The third wave hit with no warning. Wolves, witches, and a faint shimmer in the air that I recognized immediately, divine interference, coordinated attacks meant to overwhelm both the Null Blood and Thane’s fragment.

I felt fear. Sharp, jagged, like shards of ice cutting through my chest. But alongside it, something stronger, clarity. The prophecy whispered faintly at the edges of my mind, Anchor to fractured stars, tethered to fire and shadow.

I inhaled. The hollow flared again, stronger, more precise. It was no longer just reactionary, it was deliberate. Every movement calculated, every pulse controlled. I was no longer just defending myself. I was controlling the battlefield.

Thane noticed immediately. He flared his fragment again, this time synced with my Null Blood. A wave of light and energy surged outward, sending attackers staggering, wards sparking and humming.

“You’re… controlling me,” he said, disbelief and awe mingling in his voice.

“I’m controlling us,” I corrected.

The bond screamed in approval. Every pulse of his fragment, every surge of Null Blood, resonated like two halves of a perfect storm.

The attackers faltered, confusion spreading among them. Coordination broke down. The divine interference flared in warning, then withdrew.

After what felt like hours but was only minutes, the battlefield fell silent. Smoke rose from scorched earth, wards flickered, and several attackers had fled, badly wounded or worse.

I sank to my knees, trembling, sweat cooling on my skin. The hollow hummed faintly, almost exhausted but still alive.

Thane collapsed beside me, one hand bracing himself on the ground, the other brushing against mine. His fragment was dimmed, almost calm, but his chest heaved with exertion.

“You… saved me,” he said, voice rough. “You saved yourself. And you saved me.”

“I didn’t mean to… it just ....” I swallowed, voice catching. “It just happened.”

“Good,” he said, gripping my wrist firmly. “Because the world will test you again. Harder.”

I looked up at him, realizing something terrifying. Not just that we had survived. Not just that I had learned to manipulate the Null Blood with precision.

The prophecy was real.

And the world, every pack, every witch, every divine entity, was already watching.

By evening, Raelthorn was on high alert. Wolves doubled their patrols. Wards glowed bright along the terraces. And yet, for the first time, I felt… capable.

I followed Thane to the training wing, each step careful, deliberate. The bond pulsed faintly but steadily.

“You pushed harder than I expected,” he said quietly. “I almost lost control of the fragment.”

“I know,” I said. “And I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” he said, voice softer. “You’ve grown stronger today. Smarter. You’ve changed the way Null Blood works.”

The bond flared in agreement, warm, tethering, insistent. I couldn’t look away from him. His gaze held molten intensity, pride, and something else, something I couldn’t name but could feel pulsing in my chest.

“You know this is only the beginning, right?” he murmured.

“I know,” I replied, shivering slightly from exhaustion and the lingering intensity of our bond. “And I’m ready.”

“Good,” he said, stepping closer. The fragment flared gently, brushing warmth against my skin, the bond tightening around us like a living thing. “Because tomorrow… they’ll come again. And next time, they won’t hold back.”

I inhaled, feeling the hollow stir with anticipation. Fear and determination mingled, shaping me.

“I’ll be ready,” I whispered.

“And I’ll be right here,” he said, cupping my face gently. The bond flared, insistent, intimate. “Always.”

Outside, the valley waited. The enemy watched. The prophecy whispered.

And Raelthorn, our fortress, our anchor, stood poised at the edge of storm and fire.

Because the world had finally realized what Null Blood could do.

And now… they were coming for me.
