Bonus Chapter 1: The Forgotten Letter
The early morning light that filtered through the blinds of Holly Winters' small apartment spread a dull glow over the cluttered space. A coffee cup sat abandoned on the kitchen counter, steam long dissipated. Holly hadn't touched it; her mind was still racing with everything that had unfolded over the past week. When that brought her out with a vengeance before the mysterious billionaire Victor Noel's Christmas gala, sending her through one thrilling riddle, then another after another, following a legacy spanned by generation after generation for her to take over, and she thought her life was forever over. Not so, apparently.
She now picked up again the gold embossed invitation with which she initially got drawn to the whirlwind. It had seemed so beautiful, so full of promise. But now it just felt like an artifact from another life she could not quite let go of. The snowflake on the cover, which once seemed so whimsical, seemed now to hold a much more sinister mystery for her. One that had been solved, certainly, but only partially. She could feel that in her very bones.
Knocking at her door jolted her out of her thoughts. She jumped in her seat. Nobody ever visited her apartment, at least not during such early hours. She carefully opened the door to find a letter waiting for her on the doorstep. It had no return address but instead bore the same golden snowflake emblem she was now far too accustomed to seeing. Holly's heart skipped a beat. Mistake? A final message from the Noel family? Her hands trembled as she bent down and picked up the envelope.
Inside, she found a single sheet of parchment, the edges worn and slightly yellowed with age. The handwriting was elegant, flowing, and unmistakably familiar. It was Victor's handwriting, but not the rushed notes he had given her at the gala. This was more formal, more deliberate, as if every word had been chosen carefully. Holly took a deep breath, her mind racing as she unfolded the letter.
"To Holly Winters, the one who has unraveled the threads of my family's past, there remains one final piece of the puzzle. The first gift that was ever given to the Noel family holds the key to everything—past, present, and future. Before Christmas Eve ends, you must find it. It is hidden, but it is closer than you think."
Her heart beats fast. The letter was not the same; it was something she would be needing soon, like a piece of urgent knowledge Victor could sense. The first gift was the one that interested her, however. Holly had uncovered layers upon layers of secrets already, but this letter implied there was much more to uncover than what her imagination could perceive.
She instantly went back to the gala, the cryptic messages, the secret rooms, and the mysterious clock frozen at midnight. The Noels had a legacy of wealth, power, and mystery. Now, however, their story was far from over. The notion that something lay hidden within their mansion made her skin crawl, but she could not back down now. She had to understand what Victor said by "the first gift".
For a few seconds, Holly gazed at the letter. Her words began running together as her mind started staring at them, and she felt the soft tick of her wall clock going continuously. Time is running out and if Victor really was correct with his saying the clock symbolically represented the destiny of the family, she'd have to start acting quickly.
There was no time to waste. Holly grabbed her coat and rushed out the door. She did not know what she was looking for, but she had a feeling it was not far from where she already had been.
The mansion was quiet when she arrived, almost too quiet. The usually grand and imposing Noel estate looked more like a ghostly shadow of itself in the fading light of the afternoon. The gates creaked open, the wind carrying the scent of pine and snow from the nearby woods. Holly’s heart raced as she approached the massive front doors, which seemed to loom larger than ever. She had entered these doors before, but now everything felt different—more mysterious, more pressing.
A feeling of fear was in the air, as if something was watching her from behind the house's curtains. She shook off the uneasiness and rang the doorbell, waiting for someone to open it. Long minutes passed, and the door creaked open, letting her into a room where a butler stood dressed in formal attire.
It is so good to see you, Miss Winters," the butler said in his polite but somewhat concerned manner. "Everything is all right?"
"I do hope so," Holly said as she tried on a smile. "I am here to see Victor."
"I am afraid Mr. Noel is out," the butler said. His tone was polite but unyielding. "He's told everyone he will not be bothered.
"I'm not here on a social call," Holly said, her voice steady despite the nerves crawling beneath her skin. "I got a letter from him, and I need to talk to him about it."
The butler hesitated, eyeing her carefully. After a long moment, he finally stepped aside, motioning for her to enter.
"Very well, Miss Winters. I will take you to his study."
As they made their way through the mansion’s grand halls, Holly couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being led into a trap. The walls were adorned with portraits of generations of Noels—each of them staring down at her, their eyes sharp and calculating. The house, once so majestic, now felt more like a mausoleum, a place where memories were preserved, but at a cost.
They came to the study, a dark and foreboding room with bookshelves on all sides and the smell of old paper and wood. The butler opened the door, and Holly stepped inside, her eyes immediately focusing on the desk at the far side of the room.
Across the surface of the desk were Victor's personal belongings, but what caught her eye was a small, silver key resting on a stack of books. It was exactly the same as the one she had seen before, which she found in one of the secret rooms within the mansion. Holly came close to the desk with much hesitation, as her heart beat wildly inside her chest. She didn't know what it could open, but she had an idea that it might be the next step for her.
She picked it up, studying it in the dim light of the room. The metal felt cold and very smooth, though heavier than the weight would lead one to guess. She swept her gaze across the room in search of some lock, and found nothing out of the way. It was absurd, this key lying as it did-and yet, where else could a key be safely left?
When sounds echoed from behind, breaking her line of concentration, Holly spun about. There the butler once more stood inside the doorway - though this time, his courteous face was less pleasant. There was a colder tinge and an almost malevolent flickering of his gaze.
"I will not let you go any farther," he breathed ominously to her.
Before Holly could say a word, the door slammed shut behind her, and the key slipped from her fingers, clattering to the floor. The room seemed to shrink in on itself, the air grow thick. She had no choice now. She had to find the first gift—and she had to do it before it was too late.
The mansion had turned into a maze. Holly searched every room, every closet, every hidden alcove, but the first gift remained elusive. Her nerves were on edge as she fought the mounting sense of panic. She had no idea what she was looking for, only that it was crucial. The key had to be for something, and she had to find what it opened.
As the clock crept closer and closer to midnight, Holly felt herself growing increasingly frustrated. The walls of the mansion seemed to be closing in on her, and the cold, oppressive air was threatening to suffocate her. It wasn't until she entered the old library that everything fell into place. The room was silent except for the rustling of pages being turned. She moved slowly, scanning the rows of ancient books. Then, her eyes fell on a huge, leather-bound tome sitting on the highest shelf. It was thick, its edges worn with age.
Without any hesitation, she pulled the book down. As it landed in her hands, a small compartment at the back of the shelf opened, revealing a hidden space. Holly's breath caught in her throat as she saw what lay inside: an ornate wooden box, covered in dust.
That was it. The first gift.
Holly carefully opened the box, her hands shaking. There was a clock inside: old, but finely crafted, with gold hands and a shimmering face. In the back was an inscription that said: "Time is the gift we give and the one we must protect.
Her heart skipped a beat. This clock—this was the first gift. The Noel family's legacy was tied to it, and now Holly understood what it meant. Time, not just as a concept, but as a treasure to be safeguarded. She had found the key to everything, and now, with this discovery, the puzzle was finally complete.
As Holly held the clock in her hands, she knew that the mystery was over. But there was one final task left: to carry this legacy forward and share the message with the world.
