Chapter 232: Truth Unveiled

Chapter 232: Truth Unveiled

Sophia couldn't stop crying. Years of pain, misunderstanding, and loneliness poured out of Sophia in waves that shook her entire body. Zachary knelt before her, his own face wet with tears, watching the woman he loved finally breaking down after years of secrets that should never have existed.

"They're mine," he whispered again, as if saying it might somehow make up for the past five years. "Julia and Simon are mine, and I—" His voice cracked. "I treated them like strangers. I let them feel unwanted because I was too blind, too proud, too—"

"You made them feel like they didn't belong," Sophia choked out between sobs. "Every time you looked at them with that coldness in your eyes, every time you chose Paula over them, they felt it. They knew."

Zachary's hands trembled as he reached toward her, stopping just short of touching. "I'm sorry. God, Sophia, I'm so sorry. There aren't enough words—"

A small sound from the doorway made them both freeze.

"Mommy?"

Julia stood there in her pajamas, Simon right behind her, both children's eyes wide with confusion and fear. They must have heard the crying, the raised voices cutting through the storm's aftermath.

Something changed inside Zachary, five years of buried feelings rushing back. These weren't some stranger's children he'd been keeping at arm's length. They were his daughter and his son. The twins he'd helped bring into this world but never let himself fully embrace.

He moved before thinking, crossing the room and dropping to his knees in front of them. Julia instinctively stepped back, protecting Simon, but Zachary didn't reach for them. He just looked at their faces—really looked, perhaps for the first time.

Julia had his mother's nose. Simon had the same stubborn set to his jaw that Zachary saw in the mirror every morning. How had he never noticed before? How had he been so blind?

"I need to tell you something," Zachary said, his voice shaking. "Something I should have known from the beginning."

Julia's tightened her small hand on Simon's shoulder. "If it's about that woman—"

"No." Zachary shook his head firmly. "It's about you. Both of you." He took a shaky breath. "You're my children. Not just because I married your mother, but because... biologically, genetically. I'm your father. Your real father."

Simon's mouth fell open. Julia just stared, her young face cycling through disbelief, hope, and fear in rapid succession.

"But you said—" Julia's voice came out small. "You always acted like we were..."

"I was wrong." The words were hard for Zachary to say. "I was so, so wrong about everything. There was a terrible mistake, a misunderstanding that lasted five years. But the truth is, you're mine. You've always been mine, and I—"

He lost control of his emotions. Zachary pulled both children into his arms, holding them tight against his chest as he broke down completely. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I made you feel unwanted. I'm sorry I wasn't the father you deserved. I'm sorry for every moment I chose to stay distant when I should have been holding you just like this."

For a heartbeat, Julia and Simon were rigid with shock. Then Julia's small arms wrapped around his neck, and she began to cry—uncontrollable sobs of a child who'd been holding everything in for far too long.

"You're really our dad?" Simon's voice was muffled against Zachary's shoulder. "Like, really really?"

"Really really," Zachary managed, his own tears falling into Simon's hair. "I'm your father, and I love you. I love you both so much, and I've been the worst kind of fool for not showing it every single day."

"We thought—" Julia hiccupped, pulling back just enough to look at his face. "We thought you were going to leave us for her. For the bad woman. We thought she was going to have your real children and we'd be..."

"Never." Zachary cupped her tear-stained face in his hands. "You ARE my real children. The only children I want, the only children I'll ever have. No one—no one—will ever replace you."

Simon buried his face back against Zachary's chest. "Can we call you Dad now? Instead of just... Zachary?"

The question hit Zachary hard. "Please," he whispered. "Please call me Dad. I should have asked you to from the very beginning."

They stayed like that for long minutes, the three of them wrapped together while Sophia watched from across the room. Her own tears had slowed, but her emotions were too complicated to process.

Finally, reluctantly, Zachary released the children. "You should both get back to bed. It's late, and tomorrow..." He looked at Sophia helplessly. "Tomorrow we'll figure everything out. As a family."

Julia clutched his hand. "You'll still be here in the morning?"

"I'm not going anywhere," Zachary promised. "Not ever again."

After the children finally returned to bed, Sophia found herself staring at her phone. The screen showed Lucas's name in her recent contacts—the man who'd stood by her through everything, who'd dropped his entire life to follow her across the ocean, who'd loved her patiently while she sorted through the wreckage of her marriage.

He deserved to know the truth.

Her fingers shook slightly as she typed: [Lucas, I need to tell you something. The children—Julia and Simon—they're Zachary's. Biologically. We just found out. Everything was a misunderstanding from five years ago. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, but I think... I think I need to stay. To try to fix this. For them, and maybe... maybe for me too.]

The response came faster than she expected: [I know.]

Sophia stared at the screen, fresh tears blurring her vision as another message appeared.

[I saw it in your eyes tonight. The way you looked at him when he came for you at the airport. The way you've always looked at him, even when you were trying to convince yourself you'd moved on. I'm not the one you want, Sophia. I never was.]

[I'm sorry,] she typed back, feeling deeply sorry for him. [You deserved so much better than this.]

[I deserved someone who looked at me the way you look at him. We both know that person isn't you.] A pause, then: [Be happy, Sophia. You and the kids deserve that. And for what it's worth—so does he. Just... don't let him screw it up again.]

[You'll always be family to us.] Sophia wrote. [My best friend. The kids' favorite uncle. That won't change.]

[I'm counting on it. Those two need someone to keep Zachary in line.]

Despite everything, Sophia managed a small smile despite the tears. [Thank you. For everything. For being there when no one else was.]

[That's what family does.] Then, after a moment: [Now go. Talk to your husband. Fix your marriage. And Sophia? Don't settle for anything less than everything this time.]

Sophia clutched the phone to her chest, feeling both grateful and guilty. Lucas had loved her selflessly, had asked for nothing, and now he was stepping aside with grace and dignity she wasn't sure she deserved.

But he was right.

She looked toward the room where Zachary waited, where her children slept knowing they finally had the father they'd always wanted, and felt the first stirrings of something she'd thought long dead.

Hope.
