Chapter 118 The War Begins
The storm had passed, but the damage remained. The city, glistening under the remnants of rain, seemed eerily silent compared to the chaos unraveling behind closed doors. Ethan stood in the center of his study, his back straight, his fists clenched. The air around him was thick with unspoken rage. Alea and Andra stood by his desk, their eyes scanning the reports flashing across the screens before them.
“They’re already calling for an emergency board meeting,” Andra said, her voice tight. “Some members are demanding you step down.”
Alea scoffed, folding her arms. “Convenient, isn’t it? The moment Diana strikes, they suddenly turn against you.”
Ethan let out a slow breath, his expression unreadable. “They were never with me. They were just waiting for the right moment to show their true colors.”
Andra hesitated. “Ethan… some of them truly believe the accusations. Diana’s not just spreading rumors—she’s given them documents, videos. The media is eating it up. If we don’t act fast, your reputation might not recover.”
Ethan finally turned, his sharp blue eyes burning with something dark and dangerous. “Then we don’t give them time to believe it.”
Alea stepped closer, her voice low. “What’s the plan?”
Ethan reached for his phone and dialed a number. “We go after her before she solidifies her position.”
Moments later, a familiar voice answered on the other end. “Ethan.”
“Julian, I need everything you have on Diana’s financials. Every shell company, every hidden asset, every backdoor deal she’s made in the last five years.”
Julian let out a whistle. “You’re not playing around.”
“I never was,” Ethan replied. “I want her stripped of every advantage before she can make another move.”
Julian’s voice was firm. “Consider it done.”
Ethan ended the call and turned to Andra. “Leak the information we have on Diana’s past dealings with Harson. Make sure the press knows she’s been orchestrating financial manipulations for years.”
Alea frowned. “That could backfire. If we strike too hard, the board might see this as retaliation rather than proof of innocence.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched. “Then we give them something else to focus on.”
He grabbed a folder from his desk and handed it to Andra. Inside were documents that connected Diana to offshore accounts linked to illicit trade. Proof that she wasn’t just attacking him—she was playing a much bigger game.
Andra’s eyes widened. “Where did you get this?”
Ethan’s lips curled into a smirk. “I’ve been preparing for this war longer than she realizes.”
Alea exhaled. “So we expose her first.”
Ethan nodded. “We turn the narrative. Make her the villain before she can finish making me one.”
A sudden knock on the door made them all tense. One of Ethan’s security personnel stepped in. “Sir, there’s someone here to see you.”
Ethan’s gaze sharpened. “Who?”
The guard hesitated. “Diana.”
Alea’s fingers curled into fists. “She’s either incredibly bold or incredibly stupid.”
Ethan straightened his tie, his demeanor shifting into something unreadable. “Let her in.”
Moments later, Diana stepped into the room, her lips painted into a victorious smirk. She moved with the confidence of someone who believed they had already won.
“You look tense, Ethan,” she mused. “Bad news?”
Ethan studied her, his expression unreadable. “I could say the same for you. Walking into the lion’s den—either you’re desperate or you’re delusional.”
Diana’s smile didn’t waver. “I came to offer you a way out.”
Alea let out a bitter laugh. “Oh, this should be good.”
Diana ignored her. “Step down, Ethan. Walk away now, and I’ll make sure you leave with your dignity intact.”
Ethan took a slow step forward, his presence commanding the room. “You think you’ve won because you had one successful attack?” He leaned in slightly, his voice lowering. “You don’t understand the war you just started.”
For the first time, Diana’s smirk faltered. Just slightly.
Ethan reached into his desk, pulled out a document, and slid it toward her. “That’s what’s waiting for you if you continue this game.”
Diana picked it up, her eyes scanning the contents. The color drained from her face as she processed the implications. Offshore accounts. Illegal trades. Connections to people she didn’t want to be exposed.
Ethan tilted his head. “Checkmate.”
Diana swallowed, but she recovered quickly. “This isn’t over.”
Ethan’s lips curled into something deadly. “No, Diana. It’s just beginning.”
She turned on her heel and strode out, but the slight tremor in her step didn’t go unnoticed.
Alea exhaled. “That was intense.”
Ethan glanced at Andra. “Prepare the press release. By tomorrow morning, we own the narrative.”
Andra nodded and left, already making the necessary calls.
Alea turned to Ethan. “And what about you? What’s your next move?”
Ethan walked to the window, watching the city below. “I finish what she started.”
Alea stepped beside him, her voice softer now. “And after that?”
Ethan didn’t answer right away. Because for the first time in a long time, he wasn’t sure.
The war had begun. But when the dust settled, what would be left of him?
