Chapter 365
Chapter 365
Serena’s POV
Mateo pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
"He was just too worried about me," Hattie quickly explained. "Otherwise he wouldn't have lost his temper without understanding the situation first. Mateo isn't usually like that."
I could tell she was trying to ease the tension between us. Though anyone could hear that she was actually highlighting the intimacy of their relationship. But because Hattie expressed her emotions so naturally, it wasn't too offensive.
I felt there was no need to dwell on this issue, so I went along with it. "That's how people act toward someone they care about."
In my heart, I just wanted to clear things up. I truly didn't need an apology—it really wasn't necessary. It wasn't that big of a deal to begin with.
"Don't worry, Serena," Hattie immediately assured me. "I'll go back and explain everything to my grandmother, my parents, and my brother. I won't let them misunderstand you."
I breathed a sigh of relief. It was better to clear my name, so I answered, "Thank you for doing that." I didn't refuse her offer, as it would save my grandfather from an awkward position.
"It's what I should do," Hattie said earnestly. "So... could you please not have a bad impression of Mateo and me?" she added carefully. "I really like you. You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in this world. And your son is the most handsome child I've ever met. I really want to have one just like him someday."
Hearing her words, I felt touched and wanted to respond to her kindness. "I'm sure you can. You're so beautiful, and Mateo is so handsome. Your child would be nothing short of amazing."
"But..." Hattie's eyes darkened. "The doctors say I shouldn't get pregnant. They're worried my body couldn't handle it."
I suddenly didn't know how to respond. What could I say? Any comfort would seem hollow in this situation.
"I don't particularly like children anyway," Mateo spoke up to comfort her. I thought to myself, this was indeed the moment a boyfriend should step in to console her.
"But I saw how much you like Serena's son," Hattie said, the pain of not being able to have children evident in her eyes.
"Don't you like him too?" Mateo replied cleverly. "You like beautiful things, and aren't I one of them?"
"Would you like Serena, then?" Hattie suddenly asked.
My heart skipped a beat, not expecting the conversation to suddenly turn to me.
"Silly girl, I meant that you're beautiful," Mateo said affectionately.
It was clearly a cheesy line, but coming from these two, it seemed only sweet. Feeling a bit awkward, I glanced at Benjamin, hoping he would understand my meaning.
Benjamin indeed caught on and said, "Since the misunderstanding has been cleared up and Hattie's condition has stabilized, we should get going. Hattie, get some rest. Medical science is so advanced now—what's not possible today might be possible in the future. You're still young, there will be plenty of opportunities ahead."
"Mmm, yes," Hattie nodded firmly, then added, "Take care, Serena and Benjamin. When I'm feeling better, I'll bring Mateo to formally apologize."
I truly felt this wasn't necessary and said, "That's really not needed. Taking care of your health is what's important."
"Mmm." Hattie nodded with a bright smile.
I prepared to say goodbye: "Well, rest well, both of you. We'll be going now."
"I'll see you out," Mateo suddenly offered.
I noticed Hattie's smile froze for a moment, but the next second she quickly said, "Yes, let Mateo see you out."
Neither Benjamin nor I refused. The three of us walked out of the private hospital wing. The car was parked in the garage downstairs. Benjamin opened the car door for me, and we were about to get in.
"Serena." Mateo suddenly called my name.
