Chapter 58
Besides, he had many things to deal with. The organization needed him, and he simply couldn't get away.
Even if he temporarily returned to Emily's side, he'd have to come back in just a couple of days. What kind of excuse would he use to lie to Emily then?
He had already lied to her once. William didn't want to keep deceiving her.
Rather than that, it would be better to wait until everything with the organization was completely resolved before going to see her.
But when would that be?
During the time he wasn't at the organization, several traitors had emerged.
If they were outsiders who had been planted there, that would be one thing—he could just deal with them and be done with it. But what William found hard to accept was that some of them had been with him for many years, yet they had also been turned into traitors.
Most importantly, after chatting with Emily last night, William was now even more afraid to see her.
When they met, many issues would definitely surface.
Whether these problems could be resolved, and what the outcome would be, was hard to say.
He couldn't guarantee that Emily would still interact with him the same way as before after learning his true identity.
The Brown family's existence was out of reach for her—Emily had told him this herself.
Moreover, the Brown family was also a complete mess internally, full of infighting and chaos.
If Emily learned his true identity, would it drag her into the mess too?
What good would that do her?
William had wanted to come clean several times. At the very least, he needed to let Emily know his true identity.
Because Emily had said that the most important thing for two people together was honesty.
Unfortunately, he hadn't managed to do that.
The next time they met, his identity and secrets would probably be completely exposed.
William sighed and looked away, sitting back down at his desk. He opened his computer and got into work mode.
Seeing this, Robert tactfully left the room.
William processed several documents. Even though he kept reminding himself to focus, his eyes couldn't help but glance at his phone.
To keep track of Emily's activities, he had specially registered a WhatsApp account and requested to add Emily as a friend, but she still hadn't accepted.
Was she busy? That didn't make sense. She worked at a funeral home—she shouldn't be too busy to look at her phone.
Even if she really was that busy, she should be out of work by now. Even if she had to take care of three kids, surely she had time to check her phone?
Or could it be that Emily was in trouble?
As soon as this thought emerged, William couldn't sit still. He picked up his phone and, after hesitating, opened the tracking system.
This was a tiny tracking program he had secretly installed on Emily's phone before leaving.
The location shown on the screen shocked William. She wasn't at the small house he was familiar with, but in the suburbs on the west side of the city.
William's heart sank, his brow furrowed.
It was after work hours, yet Emily hadn't gone home. Had something really happened to her?
At that moment, Emily dragged her tired body home to find the three children sitting nicely in the living room watching TV.
When they saw her return, they all gathered around.
"Did you find a job?" Nina asked urgently.
Emily forced herself to smile. "Almost there."
"That's great!" the children cheered.
The gloom in Emily's heart wasn't lifted—instead, it grew heavier.
Finding this house was already pretty good, but finding a job was much harder than Emily had imagined. After all this time, she had interviewed at several companies and been rejected by all of them.
Earlier, she had given her card to Rodolfo. These past days, staying in hotels and paying rent had nearly exhausted Emily's money. But she still hadn't found a new job. In a few more days, this little bit of money would probably be gone.
Emily's eyes involuntarily fell on the drawer in the living room coffee table, where William's black card lay—the one he'd left when he departed.
Should she use it or not? She struggled internally.
If she used this card, she and the children could immediately live well without worrying about making ends meet.
Even though she didn't know exactly how much money was on this card, William had always been generous—he certainly wouldn't shortchange her and the children.
Besides, Emily knew that the two cards he left for the children each had one million dollars.
That was one million dollars. For rich people, one million dollars couldn't even buy a decent car, but for her and the children, one million dollars might not run out even after several years of spending.
But if she really used it, the pure relationship between her and William would change.
Most importantly, she didn't want the children to develop the habit of getting something for nothing.
"What's wrong?" Aiden keenly noticed Emily's unusual state and quickly asked.
"Nothing." Emily shook her head. "Come on, let's go eat."
She'd just have to use the remaining money to get through these few days. As long as she found a job, everything would be fine.
The reason for choosing to eat out today was also that Emily had promised the children.
Nina had been talking about having a nice meal for the past few days, and Emily had been a bit neglectful of her while looking for work and housing. So tonight's dinner was compensation for her.
The children ate with great enjoyment, but Emily found the food tasteless.
Just as she was about to pay the bill, a surprised voice came from nearby. "Ms. Johnson, is that you?"
Emily looked up to see a man in his fifties looking at her with delight.
"You are?" Emily was stunned for a few seconds.
The man rushed up to her, eagerly pointing at himself. "Ms. Johnson, don't you remember me? I'm Ivan Franklin! You saved me two years ago!"
"Oh, it's you!"
Emily suddenly realized, slapping her forehead. "I'm so sorry, I've had too much going on these past couple of days. My mind didn't catch up for a moment."
Ivan laughed heartily.
Two years ago, he had a sudden heart attack on the street. Just when he thought he was done for, Emily happened to pass by, called an ambulance, and sent him to the hospital, saving his life.
Because of this, Ivan was very grateful to Emily. He had wanted to give her money at the time, but Emily refused.
Two years had passed in the blink of an eye, and he never expected to see her here today.
"Ms. Johnson, I'm so surprised to see you here!"
Ivan was overjoyed. He turned and saw the three children standing in a row beside Emily, and a flash of delight crossed his eyes. "Ms. Johnson, are these your children?"
Emily nodded and pulled the children over. "Say hello."
"Hello!"
The three children greeted him obediently.
Ivan beamed with joy. "Good, good! Ms. Johnson, you saved my life. I've always wanted to find a chance to thank you, but you left without even leaving your contact information."
