Chapter 20
"Those people today were clearly coming after you."
In the director's office, Rodolfo McCoy sat on a stool, looking seriously at Emily across from him.
"If you don't figure out who's targeting you soon, I'm afraid this won't end well."
Emily remained silent. He softened his tone, his eyes showing some concern.
"Mr. McCoy..."
As soon as Emily spoke, Rodolfo sighed. "I know today wasn't your fault, and I know how seriously you take your work. But this matter needs to be investigated. Otherwise, next time we won't know who they'll come after."
Hearing Rodolfo's words, tears streamed down Emily's cheeks.
Earlier, when the deceased's family members were pointing fingers and cursing at her, she hadn't cried.
But now, hearing Rodolfo's comforting words, she couldn't hold back anymore.
"They're targeting me on purpose." Emily's voice choked up, with a hint of vulnerability.
"Don't be afraid. As long as I'm at this funeral home, I'll never let you be wronged."
"Mr. McCoy, thank you." Emily wiped away her tears and thanked Rodolfo. "This is the third time you've saved me. If it weren't for you, I probably wouldn't be in this world anymore."
Faced with Emily's emotional words, Rodolfo waved his hand and said with a smile, "Stop it. I couldn't just stand by and watch. Live well, and bring the two kids to visit me sometime."
"Okay." Emily agreed right away. Rodolfo discussed some work details with her before waving her off to go home.
"Mr. McCoy didn't scold you, did he?" In the changing room, Lily came over to gossip, her eyes showing some concern.
Facing her concern, Emily shook her head. "Mr. McCoy was very reasonable. He just told me to be more careful and avoid getting into trouble."
She took Rodolfo's warning to heart.
Lily nodded, quite moved. "Mr. McCoy is really a good person. All these years, if he hadn't been there protecting us, who knows what those families of the deceased would have done?"
"Yeah." Emily nodded, quickly tidying up her changed clothes and sending them to the laundry room.
On her way home, she couldn't help but think about today's events, and also about Rodolfo.
Years ago, when she was tricked by Sophia and James, she nearly died in Emerald City.
If Rodolfo hadn't seen Emily at the funeral home and saved her, there wouldn't be the Emily, Oscar, and Nina of today.
When she was about to give birth, Rodolfo secretly arranged for someone to bring out her mother, allowing her to give birth with peace of mind.
After that, he taught Emily everything he knew and arranged a job for her at the funeral home so she could earn money to support her children.
It could be said that without Rodolfo, there would be no Emily today.
He was her teacher, could be considered her father, and was Emily's lifesaver.
If Rodolfo hadn't been there today, those family members probably wouldn't have let it go.
Just as she was lost in thought, someone suddenly appeared in front of her.
Daniel, standing across from Emily, looked at her disbelieving expression and sneered. "Emily, didn't expect we'd meet again, did you?"
"I did." Emily quietly moved her hand behind her back, feeling for the pepper spray in her bag.
The day she offended Daniel, she knew he would come for revenge sooner or later.
After all, she'd heard of Daniel's reputation before and knew he wasn't someone to mess with. So she'd prepared pepper spray early on and carried it with her, afraid of situations like today when she couldn't call for help in time.
Daniel snorted coldly and snapped his fingers. Two burly bodyguards came out from behind him and tried to grab Emily, but got sprayed with pepper spray, their eyes stinging so badly they couldn't open them.
Emily still held the pepper spray, her expression somewhat cold. "If you dare to harass me again, don't blame me for not being nice."
Daniel hadn't expected Emily to be so well-prepared. For a moment, he didn't know what to do with her, but he wasn't willing to let her go easily either.
Just as both sides were in a standoff, his phone rang.
Looking at the caller ID, Daniel clicked his tongue impatiently, then answered the call and asked casually, "Grandpa, what do you need?"
Emily didn't know what was said on the other end, but she saw Daniel's expression change. He looked at her with more wariness in his eyes, then waved his hand and left directly with his bodyguards.
She hadn't expected these people to come so quickly and leave so quickly too.
Fortunately, with no troublemakers in front of her, Emily made it home smoothly.
"Mommy, you're finally back."
The moment she stepped through the gate, Nina had already noticed.
She didn't hesitate to abandon Aiden and William, running straight into Emily's arms.
"What's wrong?" Emily smiled and patted her head, her eyes showing confusion.
When she came in just now, she'd seen Nina and Aiden both staying close to William.
Why did Nina run out by herself as soon as she got back?
"Mommy, it's all his fault." Nina pouted, pointing at William unhappily.
"He insisted on teaching me and Oscar math, but we can't understand what he's saying."
Hearing this, Emily became interested and carried her back to the room.
In the room, Aiden was looking bitterly at the messy calculation papers in front of him.
Emily quickly glanced at them and saw many letters on them.
"Didn't Nina say you were teaching them math?" She asked casually without looking closely.
William nodded at her question. "I am teaching math."
"Liar, he's clearly teaching letters, and he's talking about X, and something about infinity..." Nina rambled on, full of complaints.
Aiden nodded from time to time, clearly not understanding what William was talking about either.
From their words, Emily slowly figured out that William was actually teaching calculus.
She looked at William somewhat speechlessly. "These two kids aren't even seven years old yet and haven't started elementary school. You're making them learn calculus?"
It sounded ridiculous.
Yet William looked completely justified. "Is there a problem?"
Emily was unwilling to argue with him. Right in front of William, she got all affectionate with Aiden and Nina, the three of them having a great time together.
William listened to the laughter and joy around him, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly.
If Aiden had a mother, maybe their family would be like this, too.
