Chapter 154

Chapter 154

"I'm innocent! This never happened, they're making it all up!"

The man wailed dramatically, his voice particularly grating. "I was just driving normally, I didn't do anything, and they beat me up without even asking questions. Is that right?"

"Just because I'm not a good driver, they treat me like this? That's way too much! Who says bad drivers can't use the highway?"

"Besides, I'm just a bad driver, that's all. I didn't kill anyone. Why treat me like this? They even hit me—this is completely unreasonable!"

He got more and more worked up, even standing up. "I think you rich people are just heartless, deliberately bullying me. You think having money makes you so great? The police definitely won't believe your nonsense!"

He kept getting more agitated, as if he'd really been wronged.

Emily and William had been pretty calm at first, but hearing this made them both upset, their faces flushing red.

They'd never seen such a shameless troublemaker—it was infuriating!

He had clearly done something wrong but refused to admit it. Even if he'd just admitted his driving skills were poor and that's why he scared them, that would be something, but he kept acting self-righteous.

"Sir, he did it on purpose!"

Emily couldn't take it anymore. How could someone be so shameless? He was just saying things to make people angry.

She'd never seen anyone so brazen and shameless.

William was relatively calm, but his expression wasn't much better.

"Sir, we don't want to waste words with you. There's only one way to settle this—you can check the dashcam footage."

William said calmly, "Anyone can lie, but a dashcam won't lie. Then everything will be crystal clear."

"I didn't have my dashcam on," the driver said immediately.

William snorted coldly. "We did. Everything that happened in front of and behind the car is completely clear."

The driver's face went pale.

William raised an eyebrow slightly. "You're surprised? Shouldn't you have expected this? Don't you know dashcams exist?"

"Anyway, I'm just a bad driver," the driver still insisted.

"I didn't mean to hit you. Bad driving will at most get me criticized by the police, but I had no intention of harming anyone. It wasn't on purpose."

"But you—you punched me. You must take legal responsibility."

"Enough, stop arguing!"

The police officer slammed the table and said coldly, "Driver, even though you didn't cause an accident or any casualties..."

"Your poor driving put such mental pressure on the car owner in front of you. Do you really think you have no fault at all?"

"So what if I do? You want me to compensate them or something?"

He acted completely indifferent. "Fine, fine, it's just a small matter, right? At most I won't pursue their assault charges against me. Is that okay?"

Emily's brow furrowed immediately. Something was off.

Normally, if this driver really was just a bad driver who got punched for no reason, he'd definitely be furious and would insist on compensation.

Especially after noticing William's wealthy appearance, there's no way he could resist his greedy impulses.

In this situation, if he didn't try to shake down William for money, that would be lucky enough.

But now, he was voluntarily giving up compensation?

That was impossible, unless he felt guilty.

Why would he feel guilty? The answer was pretty obvious, wasn't it?

But no matter what Emily said, in the end, the police just mediated and told them to let it go.

After all, with no casualties, it wasn't a big deal. The police thought it was better to avoid trouble and advised both parties to drop it.

The driver was quite agreeable. Once the police suggested it, he immediately backed down, not as relentless as before.

He seemed to realize something—that continuing to make a fuss wouldn't benefit him at all. Whatever the police said to do, he'd do.

When they left the police station, both William and Emily looked upset. Sitting in the car, both had serious expressions.

Finally Emily broke the silence. "What do we do about this? We're just letting him go like that?"

William kept his head down, not saying a word.

After a long while, he held Emily's hand. "If I'm not mistaken, this whole incident happened because of me."

"Because of you?"

Emily frowned. "That can't be right. How would it be related to you?"

Emily pieced everything together and thought carefully. "If it has to be related to anyone, it should be me."

"Usually James never comes to see me, but today he suddenly showed up to find me. That's strange in itself. Right after we parted, this happened."

"If James hates me and did this, it would make sense. But what does it have to do with you?"

Emily was very confused. "He hates me, so he should just come after me. But you have no grudge with him."

"You two haven't even met many times. For James to want to do something to you—I think that's unlikely."

"Not necessarily." William snorted coldly.

Emily's gaze sharpened. "From what you're saying, you've discovered something?"

William looked around and took Emily's hand. "Let's get out of here first. I'll tell you some things later. This isn't the place to talk."

The car slowly started, and the two left the police station.

It wasn't until they got on the highway, with the wind whistling outside the window, that William explained everything.

"I suspect someone is pulling James' strings."
