Chapter 125
Emily hesitated for a moment, but did not answer, but within two seconds of the call ending, the phone rang again.
A thoughtful look flashed in Emily's eyes as she pressed the answer button. Maybe it was something urgent. She would just say William was not available right now and would call back later.
But as soon as Emily answered, an extremely anxious voice came through the line. "Sir, where did you go? How could you just disappear? Come back quickly!"
"You are so badly injured, we are really worried. Could you please stop doing things that make us worry!"
The caller was Tony.
He had just come back from running an errand and wanted to tell William some good news, but when he came in, he could not find him anywhere. The bed showed signs of having been disturbed.
After checking the security footage, he discovered that William had somehow escaped.
But he was still seriously injured. The wound had only been stitched up a few days ago. In this condition, where could he even go?
Someone who could barely walk--what if he ran into Clarence and the others?
The crisis in the organization had not been completely resolved yet. If William really died, they would all be leaderless. That was why Tony was calling so frantically.
"Please come back and recover!" Tony was nearly frantic. "You are so badly hurt. If you really run into Clarence and his people, we will not be able to save you in time. Could you please stop doing things that worry us!"
"Yeah, please come back!"
Besides Tony, there were other voices on the phone.
Everyone sounded extremely anxious. Even over the phone, you could imagine their expressions.
Emily froze.
So William had not lied to her. Everything he said was true. This phone call was the best proof of that.
"Sir, why are you not saying anything?"
Tony had been talking for a long time without any response and was very confused.
"Sir, you are not unwilling to come back, are you? Sir, please do not be so stubborn."
"When I checked the security footage earlier, I saw suspicious figures lurking around the organization. We need you to come back and take charge!"
Emily's hand slipped, and the phone fell to the ground.
She quickly picked it up and, without really thinking, instinctively pressed the hang-up button. Tony's voice cut off abruptly.
Emily stared blankly at William on the hospital bed, her heart a jumble of emotions.
It was all true. William had not lied to her. He was telling the truth.
And she had not listened to his explanation at all, had been so rude, did not even know about William's injury, which had led to his wound reopening and him passing out from blood loss.
Emily was completely stunned and could not snap out of it for a long time, but her heart felt much lighter.
William had not lied to her. He really had something urgent and could not make it back, which was why things turned out this way.
That meant the misunderstanding between them had been cleared up.
"I'm sorry."
Emily looked at William's pale face, her voice choking up. "I'm sorry, I'm really sorry..."
Besides these words, she did not know what else to say to express the guilt in her heart.
But even if she apologized, William could not hear it.
Tony called again. Emily glanced at the phone twice, then answered again, but this time her emotions were much more stable than before.
"Sir..."
"I'm not the phone's owner."
Tony had only said one word when Emily interrupted him.
Tony had not expected a woman to answer the phone. "Where is my boss? Where is he? What did you do to him?"
His voice was full of wariness and hostility.
Emily shook her head gently. "He is fine, but he has been too tired lately and has fallen asleep."
"You do not need to know who I am. I heard everything you said just now. When William wakes up, I will pass it on to him."
"When will he come back then?"
Hearing this, Emily hesitated.
In William's current state, let alone going back--he could barely even get out of bed and walk. Who knew when he would wake up?
If Emily could make the decision, she certainly would not want William to go back to the organization.
Once he went back, who knew what would happen? Maybe he would get injured again, maybe there were other moles in the organization.
But whatever the outcome, it would not be good for William.
What he needed most now was to recover peacefully here. Even if the sky fell outside, it would have to wait until after he healed.
Tony kept urging her.
Emily came back to her senses and said softly, "He is not available right now. We will talk about it after he wakes up."
With that, she hung up on him and ignored him.
No matter how many times Tony called, Emily did not answer again.
She went out to buy some food and basic daily necessities. When she came back, William was awake.
He was sitting on the bed, holding his phone with the screen lit up. It looked like William had called his people.
"You are awake."
Emily walked over casually and put the things she was carrying on the bedside table.
"I bought you some food. The doctor said you can only eat four hours after waking up."
"You must be really hungry, but do not rush. You can eat in a bit. Have some water now, but not too much."
She sounded like someone instructing a child, doing everything carefully and making everything very clear.
Emily bent down to pour a glass of water. When she looked up, William did not take it but just looked at her quietly.
"You know everything now?"
When William woke up, there was no one in the hospital room. His phone was lying quietly by the bed.
He wanted to check the time, but as soon as he unlocked it, he saw dozens of missed calls from Tony.
Looking at the records, besides these missed calls, there were several completed calls earlier, one showing a two-minute duration.
That meant that while he was unconscious, someone had used his phone and answered Tony's call.
He did not know what they had talked about in those two minutes.
Now that Emily was back, William realized she was the one who had answered the phone. That meant Emily knew everything.
Emily nodded. "So everything you told me was true. I'm sorry, I did not believe you. That was my fault."
With those words, the misunderstanding between them was completely resolved.
William's expression softened a bit as he turned his head slightly. "Actually, I did not want you to know about these things."
He smiled bitterly, looking at his own wound. "Even I ended up like this. If you got dragged into it as well, I really could not guarantee what kind of disaster it would bring you."
"Not just you, but also your mother and Oscar, Nina--you and they are all innocent."
His voice gradually grew lower. "But I never thought that my temporary concealment would cause such a big misunderstanding."
