Chapter 120
"Actually, my uncle Clarence is a very hypocritical person."
When William said this, the memories of what had happened in the Brown family weighed heavily on his heart.
"Clarence is extremely good at pretending. Even my grandfather might not be able to fully control him, which is why my grandfather doesn't want to hand the company over to him."
"But Clarence doesn't see it that way. Managing a branch office can't show his real abilities at all. He's always had issues with Grandfather."
Emily's brow gradually furrowed. "If all you want to talk about is your family's internal affairs, then forget it. I don't want to hear it."
Emily's tone was quite helpless when she said this.
She had just rescued Amelia, and she hadn't even figured out her own family's problems yet. How could she have time to deal with other people's business?
Maybe everything William said was true, but what did that have to do with her?
If she knew about it, could she help William deal with Clarence or help him seize power?
She couldn't do either. If that was the case, what was the point of listening or not listening? She might even bring disaster on herself by knowing too much.
It didn't matter if William got into trouble, but what about the children?
The two kids weren't even ten years old combined. If something really happened to her, how would Oscar and Nina survive?
William looked steadily at Emily. "Since I've decided to tell you these things, I've naturally made full preparations."
"Don't worry, I won't let you get hurt in any way."
There were two clean rocks nearby. William pulled Emily to sit down and continued, "You can probably guess what happened next. Clarence held a grudge and kept sabotaging my dad."
"But fortunately, my dad didn't fall into trouble because of this. The company was doing pretty well, but the better it did, the angrier Clarence became."
When he said this, William's eyes were clearly full of regret.
For him, having such a scandal in his own family really couldn't be talked about publicly. It was too embarrassing.
But now, to explain things clearly to Emily, he couldn't care about all that anymore.
When William was young, there were constant disputes between his dad and Clarence—open and hidden conflicts, scheming and plotting—but fortunately, nothing major happened.
In the blink of an eye, twenty years passed. William grew up, and Clarence had a son too—William's cousin.
But this cousin of his perfectly inherited Clarence's mediocrity. His mind wasn't on business at all. All he wanted to do was play around. He was basically a playboy.
The Brown family had plenty of money. Even without working, they couldn't spend it all in several lifetimes.
If Clarence could be more open-minded and let his own son just live an ordinary life like this, it might not be a bad thing. But how could he be willing to accept that?
Clarence watched as he himself was overshadowed by his brother, and the child he had was overshadowed by his brother's son.
He couldn't sleep at night. Jealousy was like a poisonous snake, gnawing at his heart every night.
This restlessness reached its peak after William took over management of the company.
On the surface, Clarence was William's good uncle, showing concern for him and looking after him everywhere. He was a respected elder to everyone.
But privately, the dirty things he did were more than just one or two.
They were about to get to the main point, and William's voice became much heavier.
"Over these years, Clarence has done many wrong things to deal with me. I've always been clear about it."
"But my dad is soft-hearted. He values family ties. Even though he knows Clarence has bad intentions, he's never thought of doing anything about it. But I can't just watch Clarence be so arrogant."
A flash of ruthlessness crossed William's eyes.
At first, he also thought about turning a blind eye. No matter what, they were all family in the end. If things went too far, he couldn't explain it to Raymond either. It would only make Raymond sad—brothers fighting each other.
But later, the crazy Clarence actually wanted to kill William.
First, there were mysterious car accidents. After two failed attempts, he started thinking of other ways.
William slowly investigated and learned the truth. He wasn't stupid, so naturally he had to fight back.
So the grudges of the previous generation shifted to a direct battle between Clarence and William.
In corners where Raymond couldn't see, the two fought openly and secretly for a long time.
The organization William established was for collecting evidence of Clarence's crimes, so that one day, when the evidence was complete, he could take him down in one fell swoop.
By this point, Emily was already shocked and stunned.
If what William said was true, then what he was carrying was too heavy.
Just like the power struggles shown on TV, men would scheme against each other, too.
This time, it wasn't just an internal family struggle—one could lose their life if they weren't careful.
Without realizing it, Emily had already been drawn into the story William was telling.
William looked at Emily seriously. "Actually, when you called me that day, I was planning to come over."
"But right after I hung up your call, I received news that a mole planted by Clarence had infiltrated the organization, wanting to destroy everything I'd built from the inside. I had to rush over."
"At the time, I naively thought I would quickly handle that small matter and still be able to come help you."
"But I didn't expect that when I got to the organization, I'd find out there was more than one mole. I ran into an ambush and was badly injured."
"You were injured!"
Emily cried out, her eyes widening. "What about now? Are you better? Where were you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
William smiled with relief, very happy. The big weight hanging in his heart finally lifted a bit.
Looking at Emily like this, she should completely believe what he said.
That was good. His efforts weren't in vain. As long as Emily believed him, the rest would be easy to handle.
"What happened next?"
Emily asked eagerly. "How did you resolve it?"
William paused slightly.
How did he resolve it? Maybe it was better not to talk about that process, to avoid scaring Emily.
Seeing Emily looking at him so urgently, William smiled gently. "How else could I resolve it? Of course, I got rid of the moles."
"What I want to tell you is that I was injured and unconscious for a long time. When I opened my eyes again, it was yesterday."
"The first thing I did when I woke up was try to call you, but you hung up directly."
When he said this, William's voice clearly carried a bit of grievance.
He really felt wronged. From his perspective, all of this was too coincidental.
He didn't deliberately break his promise. It was just that he couldn't get away from the organization.
He also didn't expect to be injured so badly that he couldn't rush back even if he wanted to. It all happened too suddenly.
Fortunately, God gave him a chance to make amends. As long as Emily believed him, this trip wouldn't be in vain.
Even though his abdomen hurt so much he could barely stand, as long as he saw Emily worrying about him, William's heart felt at peace.
