Chapter 115

Chapter 115

Emily nervously fidgeted with her fingers. "I had no choice at the time. If I had stayed at the funeral home, it would only have caused you more harm. I had to leave."

"Rodolfo, I'm really sorry."

Emily bowed deeply to him, tears filling her eyes.

To others, a funeral home meant death, but to Emily, it was her second home. She never thought there was anything wrong with the funeral home.

Being forced to leave the place she depended on for survival—the pain of that was easy to imagine.

"You don't need to apologize to me."

Rodolfo quickly helped Emily up. "Even if you hadn't said anything, I understood all this in my heart."

"But I think the Johnson family probably can't stir up much trouble now, right?"

"Probably."

Emily nodded hesitantly, not sounding very certain. "Rodolfo, although my father escaped, according to the police, Sophia wasn't among those who fled."

"I don't know what this means. Maybe she's still in the city, or maybe Brian has already abandoned her."

Emily sighed softly. "Whenever I think about this, I feel really anxious, though I don't know why."

"Don't panic, don't panic."

Rodolfo patted Emily's shoulder gently. "As the old saying goes, when the nest is overturned, no egg stays unbroken. The Johnson family is finished, so Sophia alone won't be able to act arrogant for much longer."

"She can barely protect herself now, so how would she have the energy to come after you?"

"That's true."

Emily nodded.

Sophia wasn't impulsive. On the contrary, she was very cautious, only doing things that benefited her. If she wasn't sure about something, she'd rather wait than act rashly.

This meant that Emily should be safe for a while.

"Emily, I want to ask you something."

Rodolfo's eyes became more serious. "Since Brian and Harper have already escaped and the police are chasing them closely,"

"Although Sophia didn't escape with them, I think she won't make any moves for now. Would you be willing to come back to work at the funeral home?"

"What?"

Emily cried out in surprise, her eyes wide. "What did you just say?"

Rodolfo repeated it.

Emily was even more surprised, her lips trembling slightly. "You're still willing to let me come back to the funeral home?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

Rodolfo raised his eyebrows and smiled brightly, the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes full of kindness and warmth.

"You left the funeral home to avoid Sophia, didn't you?"

"Since Sophia can't come after you for now, and you've lost your new job, you might as well come back to work at the funeral home. Everything as it was before."

Emily covered her mouth with her hand, almost crying out loud.

She never imagined she'd have the chance to return to the funeral home.

When she left, Emily's heart ached terribly. She cried for a long time and felt down for several days.

But now, Rodolfo was inviting her back again, just like when she first started working at the funeral home.

Emily choked up, unable to get a complete sentence out.

Rodolfo smiled knowingly. "Emily, you don't need to say much. Just tell me—are you willing or not?"

"Your house here is a bit far from the funeral home, but the commute is only about forty minutes round-trip. It's not too far."

With that, Rodolfo looked around. "What a nice house. It wouldn't make sense for you to leave such a nice place to live in the funeral home's old house. I can't make you and the kids suffer like that."

"Just live here comfortably and come back to work at the funeral home, okay?"

"Thank you!"

Emily cried tears of joy.

For her, this was the best possible outcome.

She didn't have to struggle to find work or worry about dealing with difficult people. She could return to the most familiar place and continue working, keeping Rodolfo company.

Emily's only concern was that she might bring disaster to Rodolfo again.

But thinking it over, Rodolfo's analysis made sense.

Sophia had her own troubles right now. If the police couldn't catch Brian, they'd definitely go after people close to him, and Sophia would be the first person questioned.

At this critical moment, she definitely wouldn't do anything excessive to attract police attention, which meant Emily was safe.

With this thought, Emily relaxed.

Although Amelia had been badly traumatized this time, at least the outcome was good. Emily had even gained something from the misfortune—after all the twists and turns, she was back at the funeral home.

It was settled. Emily will report for work tomorrow.

Rodolfo said that after Emily left, everything remained the same and untouched, just waiting for her return.

Emily was deeply moved, her heart full of emotion.

Rodolfo didn't have anything else to do, so Emily asked him to help watch the kids for another half day while she took Amelia to the hospital for a thorough checkup.

Originally, Emily had wanted to go straight to the hospital, but on the way, Amelia kept saying she wanted to go home and refused to go to the hospital.

Emily was also worried about Oscar and Nina, so she went home first.

It was already past breakfast now. Amelia seemed in good spirits and had taken her medication, so it was a good time to take her to the hospital to check if there were any internal injuries besides the external ones.

At two in the afternoon, the test results came out, and Emily breathed a sigh of relief.

At least Brian had some conscience—he hadn't caused Amelia any permanent damage. There were only external injuries.

But even so, Emily was furious.

What right did Brian have to hit Amelia?

He knew very well that Amelia's mental illness was serious and that she got sick easily when frightened, yet he still did this. It was outrageous!

After leaving the hospital, Emily took Amelia to the police station.

They'd left in such a hurry last night that they hadn't followed the normal procedure of giving statements at the police station.

There hadn't been time then, but now that the examination was done and Rodolfo was watching the house, with Oscar and Nina safe, Emily naturally had to take Amelia to the police to file a proper complaint against Brian.

Emily handed the fresh medical report to the police officer with a serious expression.

"Sir, this is my mother's diagnosis. Although it's only minor injuries, Brian did all this. He beat my mother—that's an additional crime!"

The officer took the diagnosis and looked it over carefully, then nodded.

The diagnosis was clearly genuine. Although the injuries were minor, Amelia's mental state was already poor. Brian knew Amelia couldn't handle stress, yet he still beat her and left her alone in the hotel. He caused serious psychological harm to the victim. This person was truly despicable.

After leaving the police station, Emily was in a great mood.

Yesterday, she'd been so anxious, but today Amelia was already back by her side.

She left the rest to the police. Emily believed they would give her justice.
