Chapter 113
"Mom!" Emily rushed in, faster than all the police officers.
She stumbled several steps and threw herself down in front of Amelia on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Mom, I finally found you! How did you end up tied up like this? Where's Brian? What did he do to you?"
Emily rambled as her hands worked quickly, untying the ropes around Amelia, pulling out the dirty rag from her mouth, and tearing off the duct tape.
As soon as she could breathe fresh air, Amelia couldn't help coughing, her body weak.
"Mom, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."
Emily apologized frantically, tears streaming down her face.
"It's my fault. I shouldn't have left you home alone that day to go job hunting. I never thought something like this would happen."
"I'm sorry, Mom, it's all my fault. Hit me, yell at me—at least that would make me feel a little better."
"Ms. Johnson, please calm down."
The police came in after her and quickly moved to comfort Emily.
"Nobody wanted this to happen. Now that you've found your mother, that's a good thing. Let's go back first."
Emily held Amelia tightly, as if she would disappear the moment she let go.
Amelia gasped for air, and it took several minutes before she recovered.
Her cloudy eyes slowly turned to Emily, gradually focusing. "Emily, is that you?"
Emily nodded quickly. "Mom, it's me. I came to save you. Not just me—the police are here too."
Hearing about the police, Amelia's eyes brightened slightly, as if suddenly coming back to life, and she quickly hugged Emily.
"Emily, I finally get to see you again."
The mother and daughter cried together.
For Amelia, these past few days had been like hell.
She had always known Brian was no good, but she never expected that after all these years, he would be even worse.
Not only did he beat her up constantly, but when she had her episodes, he deliberately tormented her, like teasing a dog, with no human dignity at all.
When Amelia was mentally confused, she had no idea what was happening. Even when her mind cleared, and she remembered, it was too late to do anything.
Besides that, Brian humiliated and threatened her, always saying things that terrified her.
In this situation, Amelia waited anxiously for a long time.
She kept hoping and hoping, and finally Emily and the police arrived.
But Amelia didn't plan to tell Emily these things, afraid she couldn't handle it.
"Mom, my poor mom, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."
Emily kept apologizing, tears and snot running down her face, endless regret filling her heart, making her wish she were dead.
"Emily, I'm okay."
Fortunately, Amelia was clearheaded now. Not only could she quickly steady herself, but she could also comfort Emily.
"Come on, let's leave this place."
Emily helped Amelia to her feet and looked around, then remembered Brian.
Before she could ask, the police had already turned the whole room upside down without finding any sign of Brian.
Everyone looked at Amelia.
"He already ran away."
Amelia said softly, "Not just Brian, but Harper too. They're the ones who brought me here."
"I don't know what Harper said to Brian, but Brian originally planned to take me with him when he left. He changed his mind at the last minute and left me here alone."
"That's too much!"
Emily clenched her fists in anger and turned to the police for help.
"Officer, you have to catch Brian!"
"He's already broken the law and doesn't take the police seriously at all. If you don't teach him a lesson, who knows what will happen next!"
"Someone like Brian is truly vicious. Once he gets away or things blow over, I'm afraid he'll do even more terrible things."
The police thought the same thing.
No matter what, Emily was Brian's biological daughter, and Amelia was Brian's wife.
No matter how heartless a person is, they shouldn't treat their own wife and daughter this way.
But Brian did all of it. Someone like him was truly evil—calling him cruel wouldn't be an exaggeration.
And people like this usually had one trait—when cornered, they often took extreme measures.
And Harper was still with him—who knows what role Harper was playing by Brian's side.
Whatever the case, they needed to catch Brian first.
"Ms. Johnson, don't worry. We will definitely bring Brian to justice."
The officer reassured her, "Now, take your mother home first. Remember to go to the hospital for a full checkup to make sure there are no internal injuries."
"Okay, thank you."
Emily thanked him quietly and wiped away her tears.
After finding her mother, she felt much more relaxed, though she still had many worries. But it was much better than before.
Emily helped Amelia walk out.
The deputy chief was still uneasy, so he specifically assigned two young officers to escort them home.
Sitting in the police car, Amelia looked at the red and blue lights overhead. Holding Emily's hand, she no longer felt cold; warmth slowly returned to her.
"Mom, it's okay now, it's okay."
Emily held Amelia and said softly, "Mom, I swear to you, from now on, I will never let you leave my side again. The same thing will never happen a second time, no matter what."
As she said this, Emily's heart trembled, and tears silently slid down her nose, dripping onto Amelia.
She really didn't dare take any more risks. Whether it was her mother or her children, if anything happened to anyone, it would be enough to make her wish she were dead.
This time, she had been careless. She never thought Brian would be so heartless.
Luckily, this time she was fortunate—she successfully found Amelia and brought her home. Otherwise, she probably would have spent the rest of her life in guilt and pain.
Amelia gently patted Emily's hand, a comforting smile spreading across her lips.
God had been pretty good to her, giving her such a good daughter who thought of her in everything.
Thank goodness Emily didn't inherit Brian's terrible genes—that would have been truly hopeless.
Sitting in the police car, the mother and daughter felt an unprecedented sense of security. The two young officers in charge of the escort knew they were upset, so they wisely didn't ask any more questions.
After several hours on the road, the car finally delivered them safely to their apartment complex.
Emily bowed again, thanking the two officers, before accompanying Amelia home.
"Mom, we're home."
Emily said as she opened the door.
By now it was already bright outside—after nine in the morning, around breakfast time.
As soon as she pushed the door open, the scene in the living room left Emily stunned.
