Chapter 205 Parting Unhappily
With Erika around, Nova felt reassured, but she still managed a humble smile.
"Mrs. Moore, you've been so good to me, so you're already like family. Since you put it that way, I'll do my best to make the relationship work with Matthew."
Erika smiled warmly. "I'm glad you've made up your mind. Don't worry, I'll handle things between you two!"
Nova wiped away the tears that were about to fall and quietly leaned on Erika's hospital bed.
From a vantage point Erika couldn't see, Nova smirked, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
With Erika on her side, she was eager to see how much longer that bitch Elizabeth could be of any use, and just how long Matthew could keep defying her!
Erika, lost in thoughts of the past, couldn't help but sigh quietly.
Matthew owed Nova for everything that had happened, and it was only right that he made amends. She couldn't stand by and watch Nova suffer; otherwise, how could she face her deceased brother?
After leaving the hospital room, Nova checked her phone and saw a text from Matthew: [Why did you go see my mom? What are you trying to do? One more move like this, and we're through—I won't hold back just because of you.]
Nova forced a bitter smile and called him.
The phone barely rang before Matthew picked up, the fastest he had ever answered her call.
But as soon as the call connected, his voice came through, filled with accusations.
"When are you going to stop? You weren't like this before. Do you even know what you're doing?"
Nova gripped her phone tightly. Despite his hurtful words, she forced a smile.
"I've always known what I'm doing. All I've ever wanted is you. But you're too close to Elizabeth, and I can't stand it. If you won't stay away from her, don't blame me for being ruthless."
"Unbelievable." Matthew hung up abruptly.
Standing in the hospital corridor, Nova stared at her darkened phone screen, then punched the wall in frustration.
She wouldn't let Elizabeth off the hook. Everything had been ruined because of Elizabeth.
After hanging up, Matthew turned to Elizabeth, his eyes filled with helplessness.
"I didn't expect Nova to go after my mom."
Elizabeth found it somewhat amusing. "She really loves you."
Matthew shook his head firmly. "No, this isn't love. She just doesn't want any other woman around me. It's possessiveness."
Maybe Matthew had been too good to her in the past, making Nova unaware of her place.
Elizabeth didn't say much, but as she thought about what Matthew had mentioned regarding Nova's brother, she had a rough idea of what was going on.
It seemed that the relationship between Matthew and Nova wouldn't be easily severed, and things might get even more complicated.
Matthew stood there, unsure how to explain his relationship with Nova to Elizabeth.
He knew that even if he explained, Elizabeth might not fully believe him.
They stood in silence, and Elizabeth, sensing his unease, didn't press further. She closed the door.
"I'd like to rest for a bit."
Matthew respected her need for privacy. "Sure, call me if you need anything."
Once the door was closed, Elizabeth let out a deep sigh. She'd wait for Matthew to bring it up himself.
After resting in the guest room for a while, Elizabeth received a call from Alan about some company matters that needed her attention.
Matthew seemed to have left, so Elizabeth headed out.
After dealing with the issues at the company, Elizabeth finally had a moment to sit in her office and zone out.
She thought about how she and Matthew had grown distant lately, as if an insurmountable barrier had come between them, making their once close relationship feel strained.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Elizabeth looked up, surprised to see Raymond.
It had been a while since she'd seen him, and she was pleasantly surprised. She opened the door.
"What brings you here?"
Raymond was still catching his breath, as if he'd run all the way. He looked at Elizabeth's tired face with concern.
He stepped into the office, closing the door behind him, and gazed into Elizabeth's eyes.
Elizabeth chuckled. "What's going on? Did something happen at home?"
Raymond shook his head immediately. He reached out and held her shoulders.
"You're with Matthew, right?"
Elizabeth pressed her lips together, not answering, but her silence spoke volumes.
Although they hadn't publicly announced their relationship, and it hadn't started as a romance, their connection could only be explained as a couple's.
Raymond understood from her expression.
A wave of bitterness washed over him, but he suppressed it and pulled out his phone, showing Elizabeth a photo.
He asked, "Do you know this woman?"
Elizabeth was stunned to see Nova in the photo.
Seeing her reaction, Raymond understood everything and explained with a hint of resignation.
"You probably know who Matthew is. Despite his powerful background, a man like him won't have just one woman around. I only found out when I returned to Silvermist City that Nova has known him for years. They have a complicated history, and their relationship is far from simple."
He didn't want Elizabeth to get caught in this emotional turmoil and become collateral damage.
Even though things in Silvermist City weren't fully resolved, Raymond rushed back to find her.
Elizabeth lingered on the photo—Nova at a chic bar, surrounded by Matthew's Silvermist friends.
Yes, in that circle, everyone knew Nova and accepted their relationship.
