Chapter 94 The next step

Chapter 94 The next step

The scent of garlic and roasted chicken filled the air as Annabel entered the apartment.

In sharp contrast to the sterile air in her new office, the scent was familiar and reassuring.

Fred was humming a tune while stirring something in a pan in the kitchen, his back to her.

“I’m back,” she said.

He turned with a kind smile.

“Welcome home,” he said.

He pointed to the table. “The meal is ready.”

After they sat down, she filled him in on her day. She informed him about Jude's message, the project, the view and her office.

Her fear and the slight shudder of doubt that had attempted to enter were not mentioned.

“That’s wonderful, Annabel,” he said. “I had faith in your ability.”

His words were a silent confirmation of her choice, a tender embrace. He had the ability to make her believe that she could accomplish anything.

“Thank you, Fred.” She said

“Don't thank me. It was you who made the leap. The work is being done by you.” He said

With the exception of the sound of their forks clinking against their plates, they dined in pleasant silence.

It was a straightforward, peaceful moment—a minor triumph in a day full of significant choices.

They sipped mugs of hot tea while sitting on the couch after supper. There was a soft hum coming from the television. It had been a while since Annabel had felt at peace.

It seemed to her that she was in the right place.

“I have something for you.” Fred said

He handed her the little leather-bound book he had reached for on the coffee table.

“While in the city today I noticed this. I was reminded of you.” He said.

Annabel held the book up. The journals pages were clean and blank. The cover had a tiny straightforward design embossed on it.

“What is it?” she asked.

“It's a journal. I believed you could write your new story with it. An entirely new start. A place where you can think. Something to use your imagination for.” He said.

A flood of tears filled Annabel's eyes. It was such a simple yet considerate gesture. It showed his belief in her and was a small silent acknowledgement of her journey.

“Thank you, Fred” She said, the word came out of her heart.

“You’re welcome. This is something you must do for yourself.” He said.

He got to his feet, his eyes steady and kind.

“Slow down,” he advised. “Tomorrow is going to be a big day for you.”

With the journal, a silent pledge to her future, he left her by herself.

She started writing as soon as she opened the book, the pages being a blank canvas.

It was a silent proclamation, a vow to herself that her past would not define her. She refused to let those who had attempted to harm her break her.

Annabel woke up the following morning with a distinct goal in mind. The guest room floor was striped with light as the sun shone through the blinds.

The sound of the coffee maker and the distant clatter of a spoon provided a soothing accompaniment to Fred’s morning as she was already in the kitchen.

Instead of beating frantically her heart beat steadily in her chest. She had been prepared.

With a mug of coffee in his hand Fred sat at the kitchen table.

When she entered he looked up.

“Morning,” he said.

“Good morning,” she answered. “I’m going to go get the details about my new project.”

She was taken aback by the confidence with which the words were delivered. His eyes glowed as a sincere smile spread across his face.

“I thought you might. Annabel, I admire you.” He said.

His words were a tender hug and a quiet confirmation of her choice. As a small consolation before the big step she prepared herself a cup of tea, a familiar ritual.

In cozy silence, they took sips of their beverages.

“Would you like me to drive you?” He asked

“No. Thanks” She said

She experienced a slight tremor of doubt and anxiety. Since leaving Carson's mansion this was the most significant action she had taken.

“Okay” he replied. “Please let me know if you need any help.”

She nodded to him gratefully.

As the warmth spread throughout her, she finished her tea. She felt prepared for whatever lay ahead.

This time the train's steady rumble served as a metaphor for her newly discovered independence as she rode the subway.

The city was a haze of people, a living breathing thing. She didn't feel like an observer, she felt like a participant.

Jude's office was housed in a glass building that towered over the landscape, a testament to ambition and authority.

But she wasn't scared this time. No longer intimidated by the hushed voices and cold marble she entered the lobby.

The numbers slowly increased as she rode the elevator to the top floor marking the beginning of her future.

She met Jude's assistant, a woman with a warm smile and gentle eyes.

“Annabel,” she said. “Mr Jude is waiting for you. He's in his office .”

Annabel entered his office. With his back to her, he stood by the window, a shadow against the limitless sky.

As she walked in he turned his face a mask of concentration and calm.

“Hello, sir.”She spoke in a clear and firm tone.

He merely gave a slow nod and pointed to the chair facing his desk.

“Kindly take a seat.” He said

Her hands were folded on her lap as she sat down. Jude was sitting across from her staring straight ahead.

“We need to discuss the specifics,” he said. “Annabel, this is more than just a job. This is an alliance. Hiring a graphic designer isn't enough for me. I'm employing a partner.”

With a mixture of excitement and fear Annabel’s heart grew.

He leaned back in his seat with a contented expression on his face.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us. But you're capable I'm sure. I trust you.”

The first time Annabel looked at him, she caught a glimpse of the man she had known—a quiet friend who had been betrayed.

He was now also her partner. It was an odd but empowering thought.

“I won't let you down” She said

She made a silent proclamation in her voice. Her words demonstrated the path she had taken, one that took her from a broken woman to a resolute fighter.

She had stopped avoiding her past. Her future was being constructed.

“Let’s get to work,” he said.
