Chapter 145 You Are Going to Be a Father
His familiar scent filled her nose, every bit of it something Scarlett craved.
But she froze there, not daring to move, not daring to reach up and pull away the large hand covering her eyes.
She was so afraid that if she pulled away the hand covering her eyes, the person behind her wouldn't be Daniel at all, but just her imagination.
Or worse, he might simply turn into a blur and disappear right before her eyes.
She feared that everything that had just happened was real, and that being held like this now was just something she'd imagined because she couldn't accept the cruel reality.
She stayed completely still, only her tears silently falling drop by drop.
They quickly moistened his palm.
Daniel felt his heart soften from her tears, aching nonstop.
But he also felt terrible for her.
Especially thinking about her being pregnant, Daniel became even more nervous and worried, completely at a loss.
He lifted his hand, carefully supporting Scarlett's trembling shoulders, turning her to face him.
Then he bent down, gently cupping Scarlett's small face, his thumb wiping away the tears from the corners of her eyes and cheeks, coaxing her in the gentlest voice possible.
"Scarlett, be good, open your eyes and look at me, okay? I'm right here, I'm fine."
Scarlett kept her eyes tightly shut, her lashes trembling as tears seeped out drop by drop, wetting her pale cheeks. She looked so pitiful.
She shook her head, "I'm scared. See, it's all fake, it's my imagination."
She cried even harder, her tears becoming larger drops that fell between Daniel's fingers.
Daniel hadn't expected that comforting her like he did when they were young would not only fail to calm her down, but make her cry even harder.
He didn't know what went wrong. She refused to open her eyes and look at him, as if she'd already retreated into her own world.
Daniel, anxious and helpless, could only lower his head, kissing her wet face, continuing to coax her gently.
"Scarlett, don't be afraid. When have I ever lied to Scarlett?"
Scarlett was truly frightened. She sobbed.
"You're not him, you're lying. Daniel doesn't want me anymore. Daniel hasn't comforted me like this in so long."
Scarlett was terrified, more scared than she'd ever been, her mind foggy and confused.
Hearing Scarlett say this, pain flashed in Daniel's eyes. He felt like he was the worst.
He'd actually made her feel this way, made her so insecure, hurt, and sad.
Daniel's embrace became more controlled and gentle, as if afraid to frighten the Scarlett in his arms any further.
He whispered softly in her ear, coaxing her, "No, I haven't stopped wanting Scarlett. I promise, I'm still alive and well, and I'm going to keep protecting Scarlett for the rest of my life. Be good, open your eyes and look at me, okay?"
But Daniel's gentleness only made Scarlett feel it was more unreal.
She was a coward.
She didn't dare open her eyes to see if the person in front of her really existed.
And she didn't dare run into the hospital room to lift that white sheet and see who was really underneath.
She felt like she was in a nightmare, dazed and confused, everything unreal.
She didn't know that Daniel, cupping her face, was full of pity, heartache, and helplessness, sweat even beginning to form on his forehead from anxiety.
His sharp gaze lifted, sweeping over Tom beside them.
Tom flinched. He regretted it now too.
It was his fault. To make Scarlett feel sorry for Daniel, he'd deliberately exaggerated things and taken it upon himself to show Scarlett that terrifying video.
Who knew it would actually scare Scarlett like this, and then they'd run into this ICU situation by chance, causing such a huge misunderstanding.
Tom quickly stepped forward to make up for his mistake, also trying to persuade her: "Mrs. Scarlett Wilson, it's a mistake! The person in that room really isn't Mr. Daniel Wilson. I just found out too—Mr. Daniel Wilson was out of danger this morning and moved to a regular room next door! Mrs. Scarlett Wilson, I'm sorry!"
Daniel frowned in displeasure. He didn't think that Scarlett, whom he couldn't calm down even with all his tenderness, would respond to a few words from Tom.
Daniel felt Tom was getting worse and worse at reading the room, still butting in at a time like this.
However, the next second.
Scarlett suddenly opened her eyes. She looked at Daniel and reached back to hold his hand.
Daniel froze. "Scarlett?"
Tears rolled down Scarlett's face, her vision becoming clearer.
She saw that the person standing in front of her really was Daniel. He was still wearing a hospital gown, his face looked terrible, and his thin lips were also pale.
But it was him, no mistake.
A living, breathing Daniel who would still hold her and kiss her.
Scarlett suddenly felt like she'd come back to life. All those feelings of fear, worry, and joy came crashing over her like a flood, tearing at her heart.
She almost broke down as she reached out to hug Daniel tightly, crying out loud.
"Daniel! I hate you so much! Did you do this on purpose? That joke wasn't funny at all!"
Daniel hugged her back, a hint of a smile touching his cool eyes as he said gently.
"It's all my fault. Stop crying, you scared me too."
Her tears just wouldn't stop flowing.
Once she was sure that he was real, that he was okay.
Scarlett realized there were quite a few people around.
Tom and the bodyguards, plus nurses and passersby coming and going—they were all watching.
Thinking about the foolish things she'd just done, and the image of Daniel cupping her face and gently coaxing her.
Scarlett suddenly felt extremely embarrassed. She let go of Daniel, lowered her head to wipe her face, and tried to leave.
Daniel grabbed her wrist. "Embarrassed now?"
Scarlett instinctively tried to shake off his hand, but Daniel winced and sucked in a breath of pain.
Scarlett jumped, turning back to look at him, and saw him clutching his abdomen with one hand, his expression particularly pained.
Scarlett panicked immediately, forgetting everything else as she supported him.
"You're injured, why did you come out of your room? Where is your room? Let's go back to your room first."
In the video, Scarlett had seen very clearly that Daniel had really been stabbed by Wren, and had bled a lot.
But now Daniel was wearing a loose hospital gown, so Scarlett couldn't tell how serious his injuries were.
Still, seeing that he could come out and walk around, it probably wasn't too serious, right?
Daniel nodded, leaning half his body weight on Scarlett.
"The room is right next door."
Scarlett immediately helped Daniel walk toward the room.
As Daniel passed by Tom, he turned to look at him.
That one look made Tom feel a chill run down the back of his neck.
Scarlett helped Daniel lie down on the hospital bed. She kept her head down, feeling like she must look terrible right now, her face covered in tear stains.
She wanted to go to the bathroom to clean herself up, but just as she was about to turn around, Daniel grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
Scarlett fell back onto Daniel, worried she might have pressed on his wound.
But he hugged her, his voice amused as he said in her ear.
"So if I died, Scarlett would be this sad and upset, and cry this many tears. I feel like even if I really died, I'd have no regrets."
Scarlett didn't want to hear such unlucky words. She clutched at his hospital gown at his waist, choking up as she said.
"I still have so much to tell you. I haven't even told you in person yet that I'm actually pregnant. I already have our baby. You're going to be a dad. Don't say things like that! If you really dare to die, I'll find Bunny a stepfather right away!"
