Chapter 87 Twins
Hospital.
Joseph had been waiting for a long time. When he saw the Maybach emerge from the snowy landscape, he immediately went over with an umbrella.
Dean Roman and Chief Obstetrician Quinn Archer were also waiting nearby. The two looked up and saw that the car door Joseph opened revealed a woman with long hair.
The next second, the woman's face came into view. Even without any makeup, she was stunningly beautiful.
It was Gloria!
The two had already been warned that today's matter would remain confidential.
In just a few steps, Joseph shielded Gloria from all the wind and snow, while Caspian pushed open his own door and walked through the wind and snow from the other side of the car.
"Mr. Rivers." Roman only regretted not having an umbrella himself, missing this opportunity to flatter.
He said eagerly, "Everything's ready. The surgery is for Ms. Mitchell, right?"
Entering the lobby, the automatic doors slowly closed, blocking out the wind and snow. Caspian unhurriedly removed his leather gloves, every movement showing noble elegance. He said lightly, "Yes."
Quinn carefully spoke up, "Ms. Mitchell, when was the last time you ate or drank? Because you'll need general anesthesia, we require six hours of fasting."
"Three hours ago."
"Okay, then please don't eat or drink anything for the next three hours. I'll do a pre-surgery examination first, and I'll explain the precautions to you slowly."
"Alright."
Though Gloria was cooperative, Caspian could tell at a glance that her face was pale and her body stiff.
She was scared.
This was her first child, and perhaps her last. Her psychological burden right now was obvious.
"Ms. Mitchell, let's do an ultrasound first. We need to check the position of your gestational sac."
Gloria followed behind Quinn like a soulless puppet.
From the day she discovered Maria was pregnant, she had made this decision.
She had been mentally preparing herself for the past month, but when the day actually came, she couldn't control her emotions at all.
Her body trembled uncontrollably. She was afraid.
Gloria didn't know if she feared a life without children, alone and miserable, or if she feared the upcoming surgery.
Perhaps what she feared was the unknown future.
Once this child was gone, she and James would have no connection whatsoever.
The corridor was very clean, with the smell of disinfectant in the air. The cold lights falling on her face made her look even paler.
Just then, a large hand gripped hers tightly.
Gloria turned to meet Caspian's deep eyes. His gaze held a soothing tenderness. "Don't be afraid."
His palm was dry and warm, gently enveloping her trembling small hand, smoothing away her inner anxiety and fear.
The ultrasound room was just ahead. Men were not allowed.
But Gloria didn't let go of his hand, letting him hold hers.
Caspian had no choice but to follow in. To avoid suspicion, he pulled the curtain himself.
"Don't be nervous. I'm here."
Gloria looked at the tall, shadowy figure behind the curtain, and her heart eased a little.
"Ms. Mitchell, don't worry. We're just doing an examination now. The surgery won't happen yet. Just lie down."
Gloria lay on the bed, feeling warm ultrasound gel being applied to her lower abdomen, then the probe sliding around her belly.
Quinn checked the data on the display screen. The last time Gloria had an ultrasound, the baby was too small—there wasn't even a heartbeat yet.
That had once been the child she'd hoped for for years. She unconsciously asked, "How's the baby? Is it suitable for the procedure?"
"Yes, these twins are quite healthy. The gestational sac and..."
Gloria froze. She suddenly looked at Quinn and asked, "Dr. Archer, what did you just say? Twins?"
"Yes, Ms. Mitchell, haven't you had an ultrasound? But your babies are only about forty-something days old, and since they're twins, they're still too small. Other indicators can't be detected yet. But are you sure you want to terminate? I can see your uterine wall is quite thin. If you have an abortion, you'll probably have difficulty getting pregnant again in the future. Even if you do manage to conceive, you'll likely miscarry."
When Quinn said this, she unconsciously glanced at Caspian behind the curtain. She was deliberately saying this for Caspian to hear.
A business empire heir and a retired Best Actress who was pregnant.
With Caspian accompanying Gloria for an abortion on such a late night, it was hard not to make assumptions about their relationship.
Though Quinn didn't say anything out loud, she had already imagined a three-million-word cliché drama about a Best Actress and a CEO.
As a woman herself, she assumed Caspian didn't want the children and instinctively spoke up for Gloria.
Gloria didn't hear what Quinn said after that. Her mind was filled with just one phrase.
Twins.
What a big surprise.
After years of trying to conceive, it wasn't one, but two!
If James hadn't done what he did, how happy she would have been.
"Alright, Ms. Mitchell, here's the report for you to look at. Next, we need to do an ECG and other tests."
Caspian pulled back the curtain and saw Gloria looking down at the ultrasound report, tears falling onto it one by one.
Her hand holding the report was trembling.
Caspian walked to the bedside and gently stroked her hair. At a moment like this, he didn't know what to say either.
Gloria leaned against his waist, clutching his clothes and sobbing, "Caspian, it's not one life, it's two."
Caspian gently caressed the back of her head, as if comforting a child. He asked softly, "Yes, I heard. So what do you plan to do?"
