Chapter 289 James Personally Sees Gloria Kiss Caspian

Gloria had just gotten into bed but wasn't sleeping soundly. She wriggled forward, and the warmth that used to be hers was gone.

She opened her eyes again. Caspian had come to bed with her—where had he gone?

Gloria threw off the covers and got up. At the end of the hallway, she spotted Caspian.

He was staring blankly out the window, lost in thought.

In the cold light from outside, Gloria saw that distant, emotionless face.

He was born to be the cold moon in the sky—no one deserved to have him.

And yet this man had fallen for her. Every time, Gloria felt so lucky to have Caspian's love.

But right now, Caspian felt so far away.

Like an untouchable god ready to leave.

He looked so lonely.

Caspian rarely got so lost in thought that he forgot everything around him. When Gloria threw herself into his arms, only then did he look up at her.

"Caspian."

Gloria reached up to touch his face. "Why are you unhappy? I know you're smarter than me, richer than me, and have better connections, but I... I still want to help share your burden. Can you tell me what's wrong?"

Caspian looked down, his eyes showing a hint of warmth. "I'm fine."

Gloria could tell he wanted to say more. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed his lips.

She wasn't a smart person. Even back in school, her grades never matched James's.

Those complicated equations—the teacher would explain them once, and after a while she'd be completely lost.

Luckily James tutored her after class, though she'd often just stare at his handsome face, his long fingers, and then zone out.

Gloria's talent showed itself in acting. She knew she wasn't that smart.

In her heart, Caspian was perfect. He was so perfect that even though he loved her.

Gloria still saw herself as a firefly compared the moon.

She couldn't come up with clever solutions for him, but since Caspian liked her, she could at least make him happy.

Just like how she'd eat her favorite foods when she felt down.

When she kissed him, Caspian froze for a moment. Smart as he was, he quickly understood what Gloria was doing.

She was really so sweet and kind, always thinking of others, often forgetting herself.

James finished his cigarette and took one last look at the villa.

Gloria should be asleep by now. Caspian said she'd been sleeping a lot since getting pregnant.

With that one glance, he happened to see Gloria holding onto Caspian's chest, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him.

His heart, which had just calmed down, was hurt again.

How could he not see that Gloria was the one making the move?

Just like so many times in the past, he'd experienced her passion too.

James clutched his chest tightly. It hurt so much.

He curled up, trying to hold back the tearing pain in his chest.

Gloria, his Gloria had fallen for someone else.

His tears fell uncontrollably, dripping onto the steering wheel one by one.

James gripped his clothes tightly, thinking of how Maria used to hold his arm.

"Gloria, did it hurt this much for you back then?"

Alone in the car, tears streamed down his face, not caring how he looked.

He was the stupidest man alive, destroying his own marriage with his own hands.

From now on, what did it matter how well his career went?

He could have had Gloria, who was so wonderful, but he was an asshole. He deserved this!

His eyes red, he watched Gloria tugging at Caspian's hand, like she was being playful.

Just like back in high school, when he'd explain problems to her and she'd keep spacing out, staring at posters of some newly debuted boy band, lost in thought. He'd grab his book and walk away.

With his long legs, she had to jog to keep up with him.

Then she'd tug at his sleeve and quietly ask if he was mad.

She was slow—if she didn't get it the first time, she’d ask him to explain again and again.

Back then she hadn't confessed yet. Lots of boys at school liked her, including rich ones.

And he came from a poor family, so he could only keep his feelings to himself.

They were just good friends from the same neighborhood, never crossing that line.

James liked her. He'd gladly explain functions to her a hundred times, but he couldn't stand her staring at celebrity posters, saying how handsome they were.

But what right did he have to question her?

He could only bottle up his frustration.

Seeing the innocent girl tugging at his sleeve, her small hand accidentally brushing his, he'd blush with embarrassment, completely forgetting to be angry.

As Gloria's ex-husband, he knew just how powerful her playful side could be!

James felt like a creep. Clearly watching her made him miserable, but even so, he wanted to look at her a little longer.

He didn't know what Gloria whispered in Caspian's ear, but Caspian bent down and picked her up. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in Caspian's chest.

They went back to their room, leaving only James.

He wanted to light another cigarette, but it was like he could hear Gloria's voice in his ear.

Back when he was stressed, she'd look at the ashtray full of cigarette butts, and he'd instinctively try to hide it, afraid she'd be upset.

She'd walk over and sit on his lap. "Can you not smoke so much? I'm sorry I can't help you, but if it's about stress relief, what about this instead?"

She'd kiss his lips, and when she pulled away, she'd stick out her tongue and say it tasted bitter.

He'd look apologetic.

But Gloria would smile and say, "Then next time I'll eat candy before I kiss you, so you won't taste the bitterness."

Candy.

James always kept a jar in his car, the same brand Gloria had given him back then.

He pulled one out, hands shaking as he unwrapped it, carefully swallowing it.

The taste was the same as before, so why wasn't it sweet at all? It was sour and bitter.

He leaned back in the leather seat, covering his eyes with his hand, but tears still slipped from the corners, his shoulders shaking violently.

James bit down hard on his teeth, a beast-like cry of grief escaping his mouth: "Gloria, I know I was wrong..."
