Chapter 55 55
'Oh no! Not again. Not now.' Brooke thought. She turned away thinking of what to say to the boy. A lot was going on in her mind at the moment. His voice brought her out of the confused trail of thoughts.
"Mommy, why don't I have a daddy to bring me to school like my friends daddies do?" Liam asked further with a sad tone.
"Liam, sweetie. I am sorry. You have to go to school now. But I promise to tell you about your daddy another time." Brooke said with a forced smile.
"Does that mean? I have a daddy? When will you tell me about him?" Liam asked. He wasn't looking as sad as he was earlier. He seemed to be so interested in the topic.
Brooke felt a bit at ease. At least the boy is not insisting on getting an answer right away. "Ummm.... How about on the weekend, when you don't have school."
Liam gave a full smile. "Ok, mommy. I can't wait to hear about him." He then turned and ran towards the school entrance.
Brooke stayed and watched until she couldn't see him anymore. She let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.
"Nathan." She said aloud the name that she has been avoiding to say aloud. Trying to prevent her son from hearing the name.
Now her son is asking again about him. She was scared of what her son might get in return from his father. She is sure it will be the same thing she got. 'Rejection.'
She didn't want anything that would affect her son in any way.
It's been eight years already. Nathan must be married and have children with Keren. If anything, she wouldn't want her son feeling like an outcast amongst them. Or feel like he is the only one that his father does not love.
"Doctor Bee, it's good to see you are in. I will need some help. As I am currently holding your father's position while he is gone, there is a lot to do. I need some to do some of my duties." Doctor Patel spoke to Brooke.
"Doctor Patel, good to see you this evening. Of course I would love to help. What do you want me to do?" Brooke asked.
Doctor Patel is the same mentor she had while she was in school. He had helped her so much, maybe even more than her father did. This is because he is a thoracic surgeon and that is Brooke's main focus in medical school. He is also the same person she told her father to consider to replace him when he retires. Instead of her.
"Thank you. You can help with one of the two." He raised two fingers in the air. "First , you coordinate with the organ center and organize the organ transplant list. Or you could help assign doctors for our new patients." Doctor Patel gave her the options.
"Ok then. I will coordinate with the organ center and organize the transplant list." Brooke picked. Without the state, it was only the Emberwood hospital that was a transplant facility. One of the things her father could do, was to move up a patient's name on the waiting list. This is due to the critical condition of a patient.
"That would be great. Thank you, Doctor Bee." Doctor Patel said. He knows she will do exactly what is required. She excused herself and walked in the other direction of the hospital.
Doctor Patel also walked in the opposite direction, towards his office. He entered and settled down with the intention to get some work done when his secretary entered. He dropped four files on Doctor Patel's table.
"Doctor, we have four admissions requests from three hospitals today." The secretary reported. "Two of them seem to require immediate attention. Not to mention, they are both high profile clients."
"Ok. I think we can handle that. Can I have a brief about the nature of their condition?" Doctor Patel requested. He has some work to do. Since his secretary must have gone through each file, he can easily summarize it to him. That will save time on assigning a doctor to them for now. He can later look into the details.
"Sure." The secretary said and fished out the bottom file, among the files he just dropped.
"This one is a patient with lung cancer. It hasn't gone too far and medication might help."
The secretary then picked another file. After handing the first one to doctor Patel to scan through.
"The second one is a young girl with a hole in her heart. She was born with it but now, it is becoming more challenging to manage with support."
"The third patient needs a heart bypass. He is one of the emergency cases."
"The last one needs brain surgery,"the secretary reported.
Doctor Patel scanned through all of them. The last two patients are the ones the secretary was referring to as the high profile. They were ready to pay full price as soon as they were admitted. He approved of all the four patients.
The doctor had already made a mental note on each of the patients. He has decided which doctor to assign to which illness.
"The first patient should be given to Doctor Michael. The second patient goes to Doctor Clement. She is good with children." Doctor Patel instructed.
"The third patient I need for a heart bypass should be under Doctor Bee's care. She is the best we have so far." The Doctor would have attended this patient. But he has a lot to fill in for. The only next person he trusted with this case is Brooke. She has performed the same procedure twice recently. They were both very much successful.
"The last one will be taken care of by Doctor Raymond." Doctor Patel said.
"Ok, doctor." The secretary said before picking up the files to give it out to the various doctors assigned.
When he got to Brooke's office, she wasn't there. So he dropped the file on her desk. With the intention to come back and explain to her.
The file he dropped has the name of the patient boldly written on it. It reads: 'Mr Robert Leo.’
