Chapter 221: A Happy Ending for All
Chapter 221 A Happy Ending for All
When Olivia opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was a white ceiling, with the faint scent of disinfectant lingering in her nostrils. She moved her fingers and felt a warm hand gripping hers tightly.
She slowly turned her head and saw Matthew sitting beside the bed, his eyes bloodshot and his chin covered with dark stubble, looking like he hadn't rested properly for days.
"You're awake?"
Matthew's voice carried a hint of hoarseness, his eyes filled with joy and concern. He quickly reached out and gently touched Olivia's forehead. "How are you feeling? Are you uncomfortable anywhere?"
Olivia shook her head, her voice still somewhat weak. "I'm okay, just a little dizzy and feeling weak."
"The doctor said you have a mild concussion, plus you were under too much mental stress before, which is why you were unconscious for so long." Matthew brought her hand to his lips and kissed it gently. "Don't worry, you're safe now. I've been here with you the whole time."
Looking at Matthew's exhausted appearance, Olivia felt her heart ache. "You haven't been resting properly these past few days, have you? Go get some sleep. I'm fine now."
"I'm not tired. I want to stay with you." Matthew smiled and picked up a water glass from nearby. "Are you thirsty? Let me get you some water."
He carefully helped Olivia sit up, placed a pillow behind her back, and then brought the glass to her lips. Olivia took several sips of warm water, feeling her throat becoming much more comfortable.
Just then, the hospital room door was gently pushed open, and Jasper walked in, followed by John.
"Olivia! You're finally awake!"
Jasper hurried to the bedside, his face full of concern. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine, just a mild concussion. I'll be better after a few days of rest." Olivia smiled. "Sorry for worrying you."
John stood to the side, glancing at Olivia and Matthew's clasped hands, then at Jasper, who was still asking questions nonstop. He gently tugged at Jasper's arm. "Jasper, are we interrupting them? The doctor said patients who have just woke up need quiet rest. Maybe we should step outside and let them talk alone."
Jasper paused, realizing he had indeed been a bit impulsive, and smiled sheepishly. "I was too anxious. You two talk first. John and I will wait outside. Call us if you need anything."
"Okay." Olivia nodded.
John pulled Jasper along and gently closed the door as they left the room.
Only Olivia and Matthew remained in the hospital room. They looked at each other and both smiled somewhat awkwardly.
"He's just worried about you." Matthew held her hand, his gaze gentle. "These past three days, he's come to the hospital room almost every day, hoping you'd wake up soon."
Olivia felt warmth in her heart. After a moment of silence, she asked, "What happened outside during these three days? What about Scarlett and Stanley?"
Matthew's expression darkened, and he spoke slowly. "Scarlett is dead. When the police arrived that day, they confirmed she showed no signs of life. Her parents have come to the country and taken her body away, saying they want to bring her back abroad for burial."
Olivia nodded, not feeling much emotion about it. Although Scarlett had hurt them, now that she was dead, any lingering hatred seemed meaningless.
"The police found the crashed car in the downstream river." Matthew continued. "The car was severely damaged, practically a pile of scrap metal. They examined the vehicle and found no trace of Stanley in the passenger seat."
Olivia frowned. "What about Stanley? Did he also...?"
"We're not sure." Matthew shook his head. "The river current was very turbulent at the time. The police speculate that Stanley might have been thrown out when the car crashed down the second time and fell into the river. It's also possible that after the car fell into the river, he escaped on his own, but they haven't found his body yet."
"Are the police still searching?"
"Yes, they've increased manpower and are searching along the downstream river, hoping to find some trace of Stanley. Whether he's alive or dead, they want to give everyone closure."
Olivia fell silent. She didn't know whether Stanley was dead or alive. If he were still alive, he might cause them trouble again in the future. If he were dead, this whole affair would finally be over.
Matthew saw her expression and knew what she was worried about. He gently patted her hand. "Don't worry, the police will handle it. From now on, I'll protect you and won't let you get hurt again."
Olivia looked up at him and nodded.
Matthew hesitated for a moment, then spoke up. "There's one more thing I need to tell you."
Olivia saw his serious expression and had a bad feeling. "What is it?"
"Your father, Nathan, after he was shot that day, was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, but because his injuries were too severe, the resuscitation failed. He's dead."
Olivia was stunned. She stared at Matthew, her eyes full of shock, as if she hadn't understood his words. "What did you say? My father is dead?"
"Yes." Matthew nodded, his voice low. "The police have already notified the Smith family. They're handling his funeral arrangements."
Olivia's expression became dazed. She remembered Nathan's words to her after he was shot that day, how this bastard had killed her mother.
Although her relationship with Nathan had never been good, and she even knew Nathan was the murderer who killed her mother, hearing news of his death still left her with complicated feelings.
Olivia lowered her head, looking at her hands as her eyes slowly reddened. She didn't know how to describe her emotions—there was surprise, sadness, and a trace of inexplicable relief.
Matthew didn't speak, just held her hand tightly, giving her silent comfort. He knew Olivia needed time to accept this news.
Meanwhile, after Jasper returned to his hospital room, someone suddenly knocked on his door. It was his bodyguard.
"Mr. Smith, a new neighbor has moved into the room next to yours. He'd like to meet you."
The bodyguard's words left Jasper momentarily confused. Soon, a somewhat aged middle-aged man appeared behind the bodyguard. The man wore a gentle smile and waved at Jasper.
"You must be Mr. Jasper Smith. It's nice to meet you. Like you, I also have a variant form of ALS. The rare probability of this condition in medical history bringing us together could be considered fate."
The middle-aged man smiled, and Jasper returned the smile. He understood why this man wanted to meet him—they both had the same disease.
"It's nice to meet you, too, sir. May I ask your name?"
"I'm Mohammodon Hades, from Marigoldia."
