Chapter 234
Chapter 234
"Explain what?" It was Marco who spoke these words. He stood in front of Elena, and she leaned against his side like a delicate bird, looking at him with coldness and wariness.
"Are you going to explain how you caused Elena to spend three whole years in detention for a murderer, claiming it was just a misjudgment? Or explain how you filmed that inhumane video, making it impossible for Elena to hold her head up in New York, claiming it wasn't deliberate!" Marco was furious. If there weren't police around, he would have loved to fight Dante again.
How dare he have the audacity to say the word "explain" - he should be the one too ashamed to lift his head!
Dante's eyelids twitched. Even being scolded to his face, he couldn't say a word in rebuttal. He only looked at Elena, his struggling gaze showing a hint of pleading: "Elena, come home with me, please?"
Elena had no choice but to meet those eyes again. She took a breath. Actually, while sitting on that bed, she had already thought everything through very clearly.
"It's all over," she said. "What happened four years ago, what's happening now - it should all end. Dante, I can't help but hate you, but since I can't kill you, living in peace is the best choice."
"I just want to fulfill my father's last wish and leave. If you respect me, please don't disturb me. Consider it the last bit of humanity you have left."
The woman moved her soft lips, calmly finishing everything she had to say.
No hysteria, no impulse, no anger. There wasn't even a ripple of emotion in her eyes. She was frighteningly calm - so calm that even she might be startled by herself.
How disappointed must a person be to be so stingy even with excess emotions? She couldn't imagine, and didn't dare to delve deeper.
Dante could certainly taste this. His eyes were red with strain, but helplessness spread throughout his body. He felt all the blood in his body rushing at a crazy speed, making every inch of his skin numb.
Finally, he left with large strides. Elena lowered her head indifferently. Only when Marco was the only one left did her tense nerves finally relax, and she sat down dizzily, supporting herself on a chair.
"Elena, are you alright?"
Elena's face was pale. After a moment, she said: "Thank you, Marco. You've worked hard."
Marco frowned. He least liked it when Elena said such distant words. He said righteously: "Elena, even without our previous relationship, we're still childhood friends who grew up together.
It's natural for me to help you. As a man, as a friend, as Uncle Rossi's beloved godson, this is what I should do. You really don't need to feel indebted to me - that would actually distance our relationship."
His feelings seemed to have become a constraint between them. Marco didn't mind explaining: "Don't worry, I've let go of my feelings for you. I'm not that stubborn anymore."
Since there was no possibility between them, Marco didn't mind protecting her as a friend. This was the most suitable arrangement for both of them.
Elena was stunned for a moment, but not too surprised. Marco's feelings for her had always been more about responsibility. Once the responsibility was lifted, those emotions should have faded long ago.
"What are you planning to do next? From the looks of it, Sofia won't have an easy time. When she's tortured enough, they'll bring her back for the second trial and sentence her to death. Her good days are over." Marco was silent for a moment. "What about you? What are you planning to do?"
Elena's mind was blank, with only one firm thought: "I want to... complete the new district tourism development project that my father cared about, then leave and live in a strange city where no one knows me."
"The new district tourism development project?" Marco had heard of it too. In fact, Roswell had been so focused on this project that anyone around him would know about it. "Didn't Dante take that project?"
As soon as he finished speaking, his voice stopped abruptly. Marco realized what was happening, his brow furrowing deeply as he said nothing more, but his heart already understood.
This was Dante's way of keeping Elena - a clumsy way.
Otherwise, with Elena's character, she would have left long ago and wouldn't have stayed here at all.
A woman like her was heartbreaking - she loved deeply but could let go quickly. Once she gritted her teeth and made a decision, eight oxen couldn't pull her back.
"Being around Dante... is that okay?" Thinking of Dante's past actions, Marco's breathing became somewhat irregular, his handsome face showing irritation.
He wanted Dante to get the punishment he deserved, but hiding evidence, they couldn't catch him at all. At most, he'd be questioned by police for half a day and come out unscathed.
Elena being with him - he was really worried. After all, even a cornered dog would jump over a wall.
"It's fine." Elena lowered her eyes and smiled self-mockingly. "He won't hurt me, because I'm carrying his child, and he's hoping I can forgive him."
Marco had heard about the pregnancy. His pupils contracted, but he said nothing.
The child was innocent, regardless of whether it was Dante's child or not.
"My phone number hasn't changed. If you need anything, you can contact me anytime. I also want to contribute to Uncle Rossi's last wish. Don't be polite with me."
"Mm." Elena showed the first genuine smile in days. "Thank you."
Behind them, in an inconspicuous position, Salina watched everything come to an end, withdrew her hand from the table, and breathed a sigh of relief.
The four-year farce was finally over.
"Satisfied?" Ricardo leaned lazily against the back, his left leg casually crossed over his right, his elbow pressed against the railing behind him, a half-burned cigarette between his fingers. He spoke unhurriedly: "Sofia got her punishment, Elena is living well. Your expectations have been met."
Salina glanced back at him. The man's ink-black eyes held a mocking smile, his suit was impeccable, he looked decent and even displayed great refinement, making passing women blush as they looked at his face. But who knew that this man's heart was rotten and corrupt, dirtier and more foul than swill.
Sofia had been punished, but what about him? When would this man be judged, accused, and thrown into prison like Sofia?
Just thinking about such a scene happening someday made Salina unable to contain her excitement. But this man was definitely not a waste like Sofia who made foolish mistakes because of love.
She couldn't help but clench her fists in excitement, her eyes heating up.
Ricardo took a drag of his cigarette, walked up and grabbed Salina, his thin lips invasively pressing against her soft lips, gradually transferring the smoke into her mouth.
Salina struggled, hitting his shoulders. After Ricardo let go, he sneered, but his dark eyes turned cold: "Salina, don't think I don't know what you're thinking. Do you want to send me in like Sofia too?"
