Chapter 202
Amelia had originally wanted to come see Fanny, too, but covered in injuries as she was, it wasn't appropriate for her to appear in public. She'd have to come another day.
Arriving at the hospital, before I could even ask around, Leopold led me straight to a private room.
The moment the door opened, I saw both my parents inside.
"Mom, Dad, I'm back."
"Cindy!"
My parents' faces lit up with joy at the sight of me.
Seeing my mom, Fanny, open her arms to me, I immediately flew into her embrace like a swallow returning to the forest. "Mom, I missed you both so much."
Fanny's eyes immediately reddened. "Your dad and I missed you, too. We were planning to come see you sooner, but something came up at the last minute."
My dad, James, deliberately coughed, reminding Fanny of something.
Only then did Fanny realize Leopold was also there. She quickly changed the subject. "Let me take a look—has my baby gotten thinner?"
But the moment she looked at me, tears fell. "You've only been gone a few days, and you've gotten so thin? Cindy, haven't you been eating properly?"
I shook my head gently. "I ate. I just missed you both too much."
Seeing Fanny and me both teary-eyed, James' eyes also reddened slightly.
But he held it together and turned to Leopold. "Leo, thank you for bringing Cindy back. If you have things to do, feel free to go."
"Mr. Wipere, you're being too formal. This is what I should do. If anyone should be thanking anyone, it should be me thanking Cindy. Without her willingness, I wouldn't have had this opportunity."
Leopold's tone was humble and gentle, which even surprised James.
Then James noticed his injuries. "What happened to you?"
Leopold explained casually, "Just scraped myself by accident. Nothing serious."
Just then, my lower abdomen felt uncomfortable.
After Leopold noticed, he found an excuse to take me outside.
Once we were out, the pain in my abdomen intensified.
I could barely stand.
"Sit down quickly."
Leopold hurried to help me into a chair, then borrowed a wheelchair from a nurse and pushed me to find Brady.
"Lucinda?" Seeing me, Brady was extremely excited. "You're finally back. You have no idea—those days you were missing, I..."
"She's very uncomfortable. Examine her now." Leopold cut him off without mercy.
Seeing how I was curled up completely, Brady finally sobered his expression and examined me.
The examination immediately changed his complexion. "She just had a miscarriage?"
Leopold nodded silently.
Brady's brow furrowed tighter and tighter. "She caught a chill right after her miscarriage. Her body is extremely weak right now, and you dared to bring her on a plane!"
Leopold's expression instantly grew serious. "Then figure out how to ease her pain first, then tell me what needs to be done for recovery."
"I really can't with you," Brady complained while writing out a prescription.
After Leopold got it, he immediately rushed out.
I was in too much pain to straighten up. Brady wheeled me to a room for an IV drip.
A full ten minutes later, the cramping in my abdomen finally eased, but I remained listless.
"Don't worry. You're fine now." Leopold brushed the stray hair from my forehead while comforting me.
Lying in the hospital bed, I couldn't help but laugh. "I don't know when it started, but I've become a regular at the hospital too."
Leopold's movements paused, a hint of distress appearing in his eyes. "It's my fault. I didn't take good care of you, which is why you suffered all this."
I shook my head gently. "It's all my own doing."
I'd chosen this path myself. Naturally, I should bear the consequences.
That evening, my parents learned I'd been hospitalized.
Unable to sit still, they both came to stay with me in the room.
With them there, I finally relaxed enough to fall asleep.
When I woke again, it was already noon the next day.
Brady was examining me. Seeing me open my eyes, he couldn't help but tease. "You're finally awake. If you hadn't woken soon, Leopold would have torn my office apart."
I followed his gaze and saw Leopold set down his laptop and walk toward me.
"Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere today?"
Though I was awake, my brain hadn't fully cleared yet.
Seeing him, I didn't react immediately. "No. Why are you here?"
Leopold patiently explained, "You're still sick. If I don't watch over you, I can't rest easy."
I couldn't help but laugh coldly. "How rare. Aren't you going to watch over Sophia today?"
Leopold froze slightly, then his brow furrowed. "What did you say?"
Hearing his counter-question, I grew suspicious. Had I said something wrong?
But he'd always been with Sophia... No, wait. He didn't seem to be with Sophia anymore.
Sophia was now pregnant with David's child, locked in battle with Amelia and her mother.
"Lucinda, look at me. Do you remember what happened in Gravenford Kingdom?" Leopold suddenly spoke, his expression extremely serious.
I looked at him suspiciously. "I don't have dementia. How could I not remember?"
Leopold still wasn't reassured. "Then tell me—when was the last time you saw Sophia?"
When was it?
I thought hard before answering, "When she drove into me."
Speaking of that, I belatedly remembered the incident and sat up abruptly. "Where's Sophia! I need to see her!"
Seeing me sit up, Brady quickly pressed me back down. "Calm down. Your body can't handle this kind of stress right now. Get well first, then we'll talk."
Leopold's face had turned ashen, his jawline tense to the point of rigidity. "You're saying she deliberately hit you?"
"Yes." My tone was certain. "Thankfully, Ethan protected me in time, or I wouldn't have gotten away with just a miscarriage."
"I understand. I'll make sure she gives you an explanation later."
Seeing Leopold turn to leave, I felt uncertain.
What explanation would he give me?
Abort Sophia's baby, too?
But that was his uncle's child. David definitely wouldn't agree.
"You don't believe Leopold will give you an explanation?" Brady suddenly leaned over.
I schooled my expression. "Dr. Wood, you're quite the gossip."
Brady grinned mischievously. "If you'd seen Leopold's crazed state those days you were missing, you'd gossip, too."
Crazed?
Leopold had always been calm and composed. How could he possibly go crazy?
If he went crazy at all, it would only be over Sophia, not me.
I looked at him. "Why are you telling me all this? What do you want me to say?"
"Moved? Shocked? Or that I forgive him?"
Brady's upturned lips flattened. "I did have that idea, but I know Leopold brought this on himself, so I won't try to persuade you."
"After all, I also really want to see Leopold personally humiliate himself."
I fell silent.
He truly was Leopold's friend. What a unique taste.
That evening, Sophia was escorted to my hospital room by the Percy family's bodyguards.
"Are you all blind! How dare you bring me to the hospital without permission? When David gets here, I'll make sure he skins you worthless lot alive and makes you die worse deaths than stray dogs on the street!"
Sophia's shrill, piercing voice rang out.
Just as I was about to cover my ears, Leopold's lazy, cold tone cut through.
"Make her shut up."
