Chapter 490: You Want to Escape?
Lachlan couldn't exactly remember how he left the White Manor.
He got into his car in a daze and drove back to the GeneCipher Society headquarters.
As soon as he entered, a bodyguard came over to greet him.
Lachlan gathered his thoughts and asked, "How's Sophia? Has she been throwing any tantrums?"
The bodyguard looked troubled.
Lachlan's voice suddenly turned cold: "What happened? Speak!"
The bodyguard hesitated: "Ms. Brown found those kids and gave them an antidote."
Lachlan stopped in his tracks: "What did you say? An antidote?"
He'd only been gone a few hours, and Sophia had already developed an antidote?
The bodyguard: "Yes! They've already given it to the children. Ivan says their physical condition is indeed improving."
They would run health checks on these kids every few days.
Especially after injecting the drugs, they needed to monitor changes in their bodily functions at all times.
The medical equipment here was comprehensive, specifically to facilitate their research.
Lachlan immediately quickened his pace, heading inside.
Every door he passed required security clearance - facial recognition or fingerprint.
This was the security system he'd spent a lot of money developing.
So far, no one had been able to crack it.
The raid on the Southwest Mountainous Area laboratory nineteen years ago had taught him a lesson.
He would never let something like that happen again.
As he walked in, Lachlan heard Ivan's voice inside, almost crying.
"I'm begging you, please teach us."
Then came Sophia's clear, pleasant voice: "Not in the mood. Don't want to."
Ivan wished he could beat up all those professors who had disrespected Sophia earlier.
Their research had long hit a bottleneck - they desperately needed someone talented like Sophia.
But Sophia was incredibly stubborn.
They had no choice but to humble themselves and beg her.
Sophia stood at the lab bench, her lips curving slightly: "I want to see Lachlan."
"Mr. White isn't here right now, and we don't have a way to contact him," Ivan said helplessly.
They weren't lying. After entering this place, all their communication devices had been confiscated.
If they didn't focus on experiments as Lachlan demanded, death was the only option.
Forget contacting Lachlan - they hadn't even been in touch with their own families.
Sophia narrowed her eyes. "Then I can't help you. I just want to see Lachlan. If I can't see him, I won't do any more experiments."
Hearing this, Lachlan smiled helplessly, but quickly suppressed it.
He walked in and asked, "What do you want from me?"
Sophia raised an eyebrow: "Back so soon? I guess you've learned the truth from Grandpa?"
Lachlan asked curiously, "How did you know I went to the White Manor?"
"Just a guess!"
But clearly, she'd guessed right!
Lachlan sighed. "You were right. I'm not Preston's son."
Sophia's smile deepened. "So, can you let me go now?"
"No. I've thought it over - things have already gone this far. I don't have a chance to turn back anymore."
Sophia froze, her confident expression finally showing a moment of stiffness.
She thought Lachlan would give up this research after learning the truth.
After all, his psychological burden had been lifted.
He wasn't part of the White family, and Preston's supposed favoritism didn't exist.
The whole theory about genetic superiority was nonsense.
But Lachlan still wanted to continue the experiments - this was beyond her imagination.
Lachlan took in her expression, his eyes softening slightly.
At the end of the day, Sophia was still a child.
A well-protected child.
She didn't understand that once certain things are done, there's no way to stop.
If that's the case, then he'd see it through to the end.
He'd been controlled by hatred for too long. Now he wanted to live for himself.
This was his obsession.
No one could make him change easily.
Sophia's smile slowly faded, her eyes complex: "Lachlan, I can't figure you out."
"You don't need to understand me. I heard you developed an antidote for those kids? Very good. You're talented."
He hadn't misjudged her.
No one was more suitable for this than Sophia.
"What if I say I'm not willing?" Sophia stood straight, her eyes cold as she looked at Lachlan.
Facing her resistance, Lachlan wasn't bothered. His tone was flat: "You don't have a choice."
Sophia casually stepped back. Her pale fingertips tapped on the lab bench, then she bent down...
She must have touched some switch, because the running equipment suddenly stopped.
Ivan rushed over in panic, checking it carefully.
"How did this happen?"
He restarted the equipment and inspected it thoroughly, but found nothing wrong.
"Ms. Brown, what did you do?"
Sophia tilted her head. "Nothing. Maybe your equipment is old and needs replacing."
Lachlan's smile disappeared, his eyes cold and dangerous: "You did that on purpose?"
"Yes. If you won't let me out, I'll break all the equipment in here."
Sophia wasn't afraid of him at all, because she knew she was still useful to him.
Before the drug was developed, Lachlan definitely wouldn't have hurt her.
Lachlan sneered: "You think I can't do anything about this? Those kids... if you want them to stay alive, do your research properly."
"Lachlan, aren't you afraid of karma? Those children are so innocent!"
"Great achievements always require sacrifice. Their deaths will have meaning."
Lachlan's tone was flat, as casual as discussing what to eat for dinner - he was clearly used to this.
Sophia felt chills all over.
Lachlan... was terrifying.
She lowered her eyes, quickly thinking through her options.
She couldn't do those experiments.
Provoking Lachlan wouldn't work either.
All she could do now was protect the children and herself.
Since she couldn't threaten Lachlan, she could only keep stalling for time.
With this thought, she looked up: "I agree."
Now it was Lachlan's turn to be surprised.
"You're sure?"
Sophia smiled bitterly: "My life is in your hands. Do I really have a choice?"
Lachlan nodded with a smile. "I believe you can do it."
Sophia ignored him and continued: "But I have a condition."
"Go ahead."
"My efficiency depends on my mood. Good mood, maybe higher efficiency."
"So?"
"Being trapped in this lab, my mood will only get worse. Don't you have any entertainment facilities here?"
"No."
"What about a place to relax?"
"Also no."
"Can you at least let me get some sun? I'll suffocate in here."
Lachlan narrowed his eyes, studying her: "You want to escape?"
