Chapter 439 Lachlan's Identity
Like everyone else present, Sophia was hearing Benjamin's words for the first time.
Her eyes widened in shock, followed by endless heartache.
"Honey, are you okay?"
She gripped Benjamin's hand tightly, her eyes full of worry and anxiety.
She had been trying to find out who had turned her and Benjamin into test subjects, but never imagined that person had been by their side all along.
She couldn't imagine what a heavy blow this must be for Benjamin.
But unexpectedly, Benjamin remained calm the whole time, looking neither sad nor happy, as if he wasn't affected at all.
But only she knew how terrible he must be feeling right now.
Although there was no concrete evidence yet, the information he had was already enough to explain everything.
Lachlan... was the mastermind behind the White family tragedy and the kidnapping of him and Sophia.
"Who gave you this information?" Alaric suddenly asked.
If he remembered correctly, Chase had been busy at the company these past few days with the acquisition of the Stewart Group.
Isabella had the nerve to come make trouble at the Martinez family's party for two reasons: first, she had the GeneCipher Society protecting her, and second, she had Zander backing her.
They wouldn't let Isabella off easily, and naturally wouldn't let Zander off either.
So when the Stewart Group's stock hit rock bottom, the White Group began discussing the acquisition.
The White Group's shareholders unanimously approved, and after the meeting ended, he had put Chase in full charge of acquiring the Stewart Group.
Logically, Chase was so busy he barely had time to eat, let alone investigate this information.
So where did Benjamin get this information?
Alaric wasn't doubting Benjamin, he was just genuinely curious.
Benjamin didn't plan to hide it from Alaric, so he told him about M.
M wasn't just a business partner to him, but a lifesaver.
Most importantly, their personalities clicked well.
He had even thought that once things settled down, he would introduce M to his family.
Although M was much older than him, M had no family, so in the future, his family would be M's family too.
Joshua and Gregory couldn't help but marvel: "Benjamin really is something - no matter where he goes, there are people willing to help him!"
On this point, they admitted they were envious.
At the same time, they were very curious about who this man that Benjamin praised so highly really was.
Alaric frowned slightly, feeling like something wasn't quite right.
He pressed on: "You met M when you were in the GeneCipher Society? So he's part of the GeneCipher Society?"
"He did spend a few years in the GeneCipher Society, but he left a long time ago," Benjamin explained patiently.
Come to think of it, M's way of leaving the GeneCipher Society was rather extreme - he faked his death to escape.
But death was very common in the GeneCipher Society, as ordinary as daily routine.
So no one would care about whether a member lived or died.
Plus, M had been hiding in the shadows all these years, rarely appearing in public, and even when doing business, he would send his subordinates.
So the GeneCipher Society was even less likely to discover his existence.
Alaric nodded in understanding. "Hearing you talk about him, I really want to meet this M."
Matthew also nodded in agreement - he wanted to meet this person too.
After all, M sounded like a tough character, and he wanted to test his skills against him. He wondered if he'd ever get such a chance.
Alaric and he exchanged glances, both understanding what the other was thinking.
Sophia helplessly rubbed her forehead. "Alaric, Matthew, aren't we getting a bit off track here?"
Shouldn't they be focusing on discussing how to solve their current problem?
Publicly exposing Lachlan would definitely be the stupidest approach, since they still didn't understand the forces behind Valentin.
Even Benjamin, the nominal "adopted son," didn't understand Valentin either.
It had to be said that on this point, Lachlan had hidden things very deeply indeed.
It was humbling.
Sophia's words pulled everyone's thoughts back, and they all frowned.
"It's really difficult right now." Alaric sighed deeply, his expression darkening terribly.
Sophia glanced at Benjamin before slowly speaking: "The most important thing now is to figure out Lachlan's purpose."
In her three years of marriage into the White family, she had never seen Lachlan have conflicts with family members.
Instead, it was Arabella and Celestia who often gave her trouble.
But those were all minor skirmishes, and she had always given as good as she got, never making a big deal out of things.
What was Lachlan trying to achieve by doing this?
"Perhaps I have some idea." Alaric's eyes narrowed slightly, a cold glint flashing in them.
Everyone's eyes turned to him, filled with confusion and curiosity.
Even Benjamin, who had been deep in thought, showed a change in expression.
Meeting all those gazes, Alaric didn't speak immediately, but looked at Sophia's three senior brothers.
He hesitated: "This matter involves the White family's past. I don't know if I should say it."
He had a feeling that if he spoke about this, it would probably shock everyone.
But reality was staring them in the face - if he didn't speak, they wouldn't be able to clearly understand Lachlan's purpose.
Matthew tactfully stood up. "It's okay, we'll step out. Call us back when you're done talking."
Joshua and Gregory were full of gossip-hungry curiosity and didn't want to leave.
Although they were wealthy, they definitely couldn't be called elite society.
They had never been exposed to wealthy families before.
This was the closest they'd ever been to elite family gossip - if they left now, they wouldn't hear it.
How could they miss such a good opportunity?
After Matthew stood up, he noticed Joshua and Gregory behind him hadn't moved, and instinctively turned to look.
With that look, he met two pairs of sincere and eager eyes staring at him expectantly.
Matthew: "..."
He laughed in exasperation, grabbed Joshua and Gregory by their collars, one on each side, and prepared to head for the door.
Just then, Benjamin, who had been silent for a while, suddenly spoke: "You don't need to leave. Stay and listen together."
To deal with Lachlan and the GeneCipher Society, relying on himself alone was far from enough.
He needed enough people to help him now.
Most importantly, they were all his own people - Sophia's senior brothers and family.
Joshua and Gregory were being held by their collars by Matthew, like little chicks grabbed by the scruff of their necks.
Hearing Benjamin's words, Joshua and Gregory immediately nodded in agreement: "Matthew, let go! Benjamin has spoken."
Matthew immediately released his grip and sat back down.
Seeing Joshua and Gregory's smug expressions, a vein throbbed at Benjamin's temple, and he couldn't help but question his choice.
Could Joshua and Gregory really help him?
Still, for Sophia's sake, he held back.
"Alaric, go ahead and tell us everything you know."
Benjamin felt he had made sufficient mental preparation to face whatever Alaric was about to say.
But when Alaric spoke his first sentence, his expression changed.
