Chapter 13 A deception
When Caroline saw the people around him start to try to search, her heart beat faster. She didn't know why she was feeling different today, maybe it was because of Stella, or perhaps something was about to happen soon?
"What's wrong with you? You don't look well," said Nicholas, who clearly noticed that something was off with Caroline. After all, he always paid close attention to the girl he liked. He was very concerned and asked what had happened.
"Oh, it's nothing. Maybe it's just a little stomachache from the cake I ate earlier," Caroline replied. She didn't want to involve Nicholas in too many things. If she told him that her strange feelings were because of Stella, there might be unfamiliar feelings that would arise later. It was better not to let Nicholas know too much.
While they were talking, Stella suddenly approached Caroline's bag and pretended to have stumbled upon it by accident. "Oh, isn't this my bracelet? If I'm not mistaken, this bag is yours, right?" Stella said.
Caroline had just finished speaking when she saw Stella take out a bracelet from her bag. It was all her fault for being careless. She must have been framed by Stella when they were dancing earlier. She should have taken her bag with her.
"This bag is mine, but this bracelet is definitely not mine. I think you must have made a mistake," Caroline replied. Many people overheard their conversation and chose to believe Stella. After all, the evidence was clear, and the item was found in her bag. If Caroline were to argue further, it would only make her seem like she had bad character.
Some people had started to distance themselves from Caroline, but Nicholas held her hand tightly and reassured her that everything was alright. When Caroline heard this, she felt a warm feeling in her heart. After all, she had always been disappointed and never had anyone who completely trusted her.
“How could I be wrong? I found my bracelet in your bag. Did I see it wrong?" Seeing her aggressive behavior now, Caroline felt very strange and really wanted to slap her and quickly leave. After all, this matter was not her fault at all. Why should she admit to something she didn't do?
At this moment, Stella stood still and was very happy. She liked seeing Caroline being forced into helplessness, and even now she still smiled innocently. In fact, her heart had long been so evil that she couldn't continue watching.
"Right, someone like you who has experienced such a thing is inevitably more evil in their heart. Maybe you don't have a good job now and can only live by stealing other people's things." After hearing what she said, Caroline widened her eyes because she did not expect her to bring up the past in such a big occasion. If it weren't for herself going to jail for her back then, how could she have what she has today? Does she not know about this?
"How can you be like this? Don’t you know what happened back then?" Perhaps Stella's purpose of doing this was to make Caroline lose face in front of so many people, but can she reveal the truth from back then when no one would believe it anyway? At present, besides herself stealing things and going to jail at that time, everyone else began silently shifting towards Stella.
"Oh my god! Originally thought that they were a particularly happy couple, but now it seems that this girl is quite scheming too; probably used some great conspiracy to hook up with Nicholas." Hearing someone say this among them made Nicholas even angrier as if his eyes could freeze the whole place.
However, those around continued discussing without noticing any discomfort on Caroline since being wrongly accused is a very unpleasant thing. She had let go of being falsely accused before but now everything had changed for her; there was no relationship between her and Stella anymore so why does she need act like this?
"Did you all know that she had been to prison for three years? So what should we do now? Should we send you to the police station?" The gentle but forceful words made Caroline unable to bear it any longer.
"Let's not talk about right or wrong for now. Since you insist that she stole your bracelet, let's check the surveillance video today to see who did it. If it really was Caroline, then I'll compensate you with ten items worth more than this."
After hearing what Nicholas said, Caroline felt a little aggrieved. After all, she hadn't done anything wrong. Why should she compensate her with ten items? "Wait here, I'll go check the video." Nicholas held Caroline's hand before leaving, afraid that she would be bullied by others in the hall. He didn't want her to be hurt by any gossip, so he left reluctantly.
Everyone started to talk, which made Caroline very unhappy. But after thinking about what Nicholas said earlier, she felt more at ease. She used to have nothing, but now Nicholas was by her side, not wanting her to be hurt in any way. This was already the greatest support.
Of course, others were also talking about Caroline, but they dared not speak loudly because Nicholas was a powerful figure. They couldn't afford to offend her. They just felt it was a pity that such an excellent man like Nicholas was hooked by Caroline.
When Nicholas arrived at backstage, he wanted to check the surveillance video, but the person in charge refused him. However, as soon as they found out about Nicholas's identity, they immediately pulled out the part of the surveillance video that he needed.
Although the hall was large, every corner was monitored. Didn't Caroline know that she should check the video? Nicholas took the video and came to the hall, ready to show it.
"You said Caroline stole your bracelet. Let's all witness who did it today."
The staff member started playing the video on the screen. Everyone was waiting to see if Caroline did it, but the video showed that Caroline did not do it. On the contrary, Caroline was more innocent because she had put her own bracelet in her bag. Soon everyone knew that this was a deception.
