Chapter 45

Chapter 45

Alexander's POV

Elizabeth went to Smith Manor. According to my investigation, there's a high chance she'll run into Aiden.

That man Elizabeth claimed to hate with every fiber of her being.

I kept my promise and sent people to follow her. But I, who should have been focused on work, kept getting distracted thinking about this.

Charles had already given me those meaningful looks several times. Finally, when bringing me coffee, he spoke up.

"Mr. Windsor, are you worried about Ms. Spencer?"

I instinctively frowned, wanting to deny what he said.

But the words got stuck in my throat, and all that came out was a light snort. "I'm just worried she'll hurt the baby."

When it came to Elizabeth, I was very clear that I was just somewhat interested in her. As for the kind of special feelings Charles thought I had - those didn't exist at all.

Especially when I saw her easily break into the Smith Group's internal network and skillfully pull up all the information useful to her, I felt a different kind of emotion.

I was certain that the Smith Group's achievements over these years were very likely related to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was capable, and that capability could be useful to me.

"It's the beginning of the quarter. Keep a close eye on all projects - we can't afford any mistakes."

Charles immediately tensed up and responded, "Yes, sir!"

I glanced at him coolly. As he was about to leave the office, I still spoke up, "When you have time, contact the people around Elizabeth and ask what's going on over there."

Charles looked at me again with an expression that said he understood everything. I clicked my tongue in displeasure, and he reined in his look before turning around and leaving.

As the workday neared its end, there was still no sign of Elizabeth leaving, but the restlessness in my heart grew more and more obvious.

She knew full well it was a dangerous place, yet she stayed there. Was she planning to spend the night there?

I took out my phone, almost instinctively wanting to call her, but forced myself to hold back.

Elizabeth hadn't asked my people for help, nor had she sent me any messages, which meant she was currently safe.

If I contacted her first, wouldn't that make it seem like I cared too much about her?

A strange sense of competitiveness rose in my heart, making me suppress the impulse and not make that call.

When it was time to leave work, the driver was already waiting downstairs. On the road, I had him change direction and head straight to Smith Manor.

It was already this late, and she still wasn't coming back - could she be trapped? Without even a chance to call for help?

I frowned, letting the pressure in the car drop lower and lower, telling myself, as if making excuses: going to find her was only because I was worried about the baby.

It seemed that only by thinking this way could my heart calm down a little.

The car soon arrived at Smith Manor. After the driver announced my identity, no one dared to block my car anymore.

Mrs. Bella Smith came out to greet me personally, looking at me with some surprise.

"You're Alexander Windsor?"

Though she was an elder, I could still hear some restraint when she addressed me by my full name. But I understood the surprise in her eyes, after all, at her birthday banquet a while ago, I only attended in the name of the Windsor Family and didn't reveal my personal identity.

She gestured for me to come in and reasonably guessed, "Is Mr. Windsor here to discuss some cooperation project with us?"

I followed her lead and asked, "Is Aiden here?"

She looked at me a few more times, clearly hesitant, but still nodded. "Yes, Aiden is here, but it's already late. He's probably already resting."

Hearing this, my heart sank.

Resting?

Elizabeth had been out of contact this whole time, and Aiden was already resting, could they be together?

Just thinking about this possibility made me feel inexplicably depressed and uncomfortable.

"Mr. Windsor, it's already late, so maybe..."

She stopped mid-sentence, clearly feeling it wasn't quite right to just send me away. She pressed her lips together and changed tack, "If you don't mind, why don't you stay the night here?"

She seemed to really think I was here to discuss business with Aiden and didn't want to miss this opportunity, so she wanted to keep me here this way.

"Then I'll impose on you." I agreed directly. A servant led me upstairs to a guest room.

Passing a row of rooms, I asked directly, "Which one is Aiden's room?"

The servant was quite afraid of me and shakily pointed in a direction.

I glanced that way, then said, "Just arrange any guest room for me."

With people around, I couldn't go over directly, but knowing the exact location, my heart actually calmed down.

After the servant brought me to the guest room, they didn't dare stay long and quickly left. Taking advantage of no one being around, I headed straight in that direction.

I went straight to Aiden's room and knocked on the door.

Several violent crashing sounds came from inside. I immediately pushed the door open and burst in.

What met my eyes was complete chaos, with clothes scattered on the floor. I recognized Elizabeth's jacket among them at a glance.

"Get away!" A hoarse woman's scream came through. My body stiffened slightly as I slowly looked toward the source of the sound.

Was she talking to me?

But when I saw the woman huddled in the corner with a helpless expression on her face, my heart softened instantly.

Elizabeth was glaring at Aiden, she was shouting at him.

"Mr. Windsor?"

Only then did Aiden snap out of the chaos. Seeing it was me, he went completely limp. "How are you here?"

The woman in the corner, wrapped in a blanket, finally seemed to come to her senses. She looked at me, those almond eyes brimming with tears.

"Mr. Windsor." She spoke in a very soft, fragile voice, as if she would burst into tears the next second.

With a dark expression, I walked over, wrapped the blanket tightly around her, and then scooped her up in my arms.

Seeing this, Aiden tried to stop me. "Mr. Windsor, she's my fiancée. It's not appropriate for you to take her away like this, is it?"

"Fiancée?" I didn't even bother looking at him. "If I remember correctly, Mr. Smith personally said that your engagement has been called off, didn't he?"

Aiden was immediately speechless and didn't dare actually try to stop me.

I shouldered past him and walked out carrying Elizabeth.

A servant saw this scene and turned pale with fright, seeming to want to report to someone in a panic.

Aiden chased after us, shouting behind me, "Mr. Windsor! Elizabeth is no good! She'll only betray you! Don't let her fool you!"

I looked down at the woman burying her face in my chest, feeling her warm breath.

That warmth gradually seeped through my shirt, making my heart feel strangely restless.

What exactly happened in that scene just now? Elizabeth didn't call for help was it because she had no chance, or because she never thought to ask for help at all?

Just thinking it might be the latter made the anger in my chest impossible to suppress. I strode toward the exit with large steps.

Mrs. Bella Smith hurried over with a servant's support, her face turning white with shock when she saw this scene.

"Mr. Windsor, what is the meaning of this? Why are you carrying Elizabeth?"

I held the person in my arms even tighter. No one dared to step forward and stop me.
