Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Elizabeth's POV

Alexander raised an eyebrow, looking at me with an unmistakable hint of seduction in his eyes.

Faced with that expression, I suddenly didn't know what to say.

He seemed to think I might develop some inappropriate feelings for him, which felt kind of strange.

"I need to go out for a bit." I immediately changed the subject, trying to create some distance between us.

At this time, things should be getting interesting at Smith Manor. I could go check out the situation. After all, Alexander came back at this time to handle his own business. I overreacted earlier, actually thinking he came back because of me.

With that thought, I said graciously, "Please don't take what I just said to heart; I was just speaking thoughtlessly."

Alexander frowned, watching me turn to leave, but this time he didn't grab me.

However, as I got in the car, he followed and asked directly, "Where are you planning to go?"

I didn't plan to hide it from him. "I want to go back to Smith Manor and see what's happening."

"Smith Manor?" Alexander's expression darkened. "Why would you go back to that place? Didn't you cut ties with them?"

I couldn't quite read his emotions, so I answered honestly, "To watch the show. Grandma has never liked Bianca. Aiden dared to announce his relationship with Bianca so publicly in the media—he's definitely going to be punished."

Alexander looked at me with a somewhat subtle expression, as if evaluating something.

"You mean you think you can go there now and walk away unscathed?"

I froze for a moment, immediately understanding what he meant.

Whether I could walk away unscathed was indeed like a gamble. My chips were the child in my belly and Grandma's current slight favoritism toward me.

Just minutes ago, I'd been pretty confident, but hearing these words from Alexander's mouth, I actually started to hesitate.

Earlier, I'd just felt awkward being alone with him and instinctively wanted an excuse to slip away. If I analyzed it rationally, I really shouldn't be walking into that situation voluntarily.

I stood by the car, caught between staying and going.

Alexander saw my hesitation. He turned and walked back to the villa, tossing out, "Don't overthink it. I just don't want you to drag the child in your belly into trouble."

After he entered the villa, that invisible pressure finally eased a bit. I breathed a sigh of relief and followed him in after a while.

I shut myself in my room to avoid running into Alexander again. Only after doing this did I completely relax.

Lisa came back in, and seeing my expression as I'd just survived a disaster, she said with a smile, "Ms. Spencer, I told you Mr. Windsor is very easy to get along with. He's not as scary as you imagined."

When Alexander came in earlier, Lisa and the others had tactfully left. She probably misunderstood now, thinking Alexander and I had gotten along well.

"Has Mr. Windsor left?" I changed the subject and asked directly.

Lisa brought a plate of fruit to me, her attitude attentive, "Mr. Windsor went to the study. He's probably handling work."

I popped a grape in my mouth. The sweet juice burst on my tongue as I nodded along.

So Alexander did have work that required the study, which was why he came at this time. I really had overthought it.

Once I figured this out, the images of my close contact with Alexander earlier pricked at me like needles, making my face burn with embarrassment.

My phone suddenly vibrated—it was a call from Aiden.

Counting the time, someone from Smith Manor must have already contacted Aiden. He was definitely furious right now, calling to settle the score with me.

But wasn't he afraid of Alexander's power? How dare he call me so openly?

With that thought, I calmly pressed the answer button.

Sure enough, Aiden's furious voice came through, "Elizabeth, what are you playing at, acting pitiful in front of Grandma? The child in your belly clearly isn't mine, yet you dare say those things to Grandma?"

"I never mentioned the child. She misunderstood on her own. What else do you want? Aren't you afraid of making Alexander angry?" My tone was direct, with no intention of saving his face.

Aiden clearly paused for two seconds before speaking, "Stop threatening me with Mr. Windsor! I don't believe he has any feelings for you. You just happened to get pregnant with his child, that's all."

"Is that so?" I laughed lightly. "Then you should know where I'm living now, right? Since you know, you still dare to call?"

I was currently living in Alexander's villa—something Aiden could easily find out with a little investigation. I didn't believe he didn't know, which was why I said it deliberately.

The other end went silent for a few seconds before he said viciously, "Elizabeth, don't get cocky! Mr. Windsor only cares about the child in your belly. Once the child is born, he'll definitely kick you out. I'd like to see what you'll do then!"

Though harsh, these words were realistic and indeed something I needed to consider.

"You should worry about how to deal with your grandmother first. Don't you care about Bianca the most? Better not let her suffer."

With that, I hung up directly, not needing to imagine how furious Aiden must be.

Aiden called several more times, all of which I rejected. The conversation had been clear enough—where did he get the nerve to keep pestering me?

Lisa had been listening the whole time, her expression somewhat serious, as if thinking about something.

After a few seconds, she suddenly looked up and said, "Ms. Spencer, I think Mr. Windsor is a very good person. He definitely won't abandon you."

I raised an eyebrow at her. "You think after I give birth, Alexander will still protect me?"

Though it felt strange to say, I had to admit that Alexander's current behavior was indeed protecting me.

Lisa nodded very seriously, "Of course. Mr. Windsor will definitely take responsibility. Besides, once you give birth to Mr. Windsor's child, you'll be the child's mother. With that status alone, Mr. Windsor won't let anyone hurt you."

I looked at Lisa without speaking.

She worked in this villa, so naturally, she had rose-colored glasses when it came to Alexander. Her words weren't very credible. I'd just listen and not take them seriously.

As for the drama at Smith Manor, I couldn't watch it anymore. However, my phone kept ringing—calls from both Smith Manor and Aiden's side, which I ignored completely.

Just from this, Aiden must be having quite a headache right now. As long as they felt troubled, I was satisfied.

As night fell, Alexander and I had dinner together. He glanced at me casually.

"Still going out?"

"I'll definitely protect myself." I paused, then muttered quietly, "Besides, didn't you assign people to protect me anyway?"
