Chapter 294 The Baby's Father

Chapter 294 The Baby's Father

Ethan seemed furious.

Since that day, he hadn't shown up before Hannah again.

Apart from the anonymous breakfast delivered every day, there was no other contact. Even the little notes had vanished.

Sometimes Hannah would stare at the office, as if someone was missing from there.

Every time she spaced out for a few minutes, she would shake her head and tell herself to stop thinking about it.

Wasn't this exactly what she wanted?

But Hannah was grew increasingly confused. In the end, to keep her thoughts at bay, she simply started living at the lab.

Until eventually, she collapsed in the laboratory.

When Ethan heard from Cordelia that Hannah was hospitalized, he was at a hospital in Alvenia with Evelyn.

Evelyn had fainted from high blood pressure, and he'd been taking care of her for several consecutive weeks.

When Cordelia's call came through, her voice was very low.

"Ethan, Ms. Nguyen is in the hospital."

Ethan rose to his feet. "What happened?"

"She collapsed in the lab. She's now at a hospital in Silverlight City called Riverside Regional Hospital."

Cordelia cleared her throat softly. "Sophia told me not to tell you, but I think you should know. Anyway, there are some things you should inquire in person. I don't know all the details either."

Hannah was pregnant. Cordelia didn't know whose child it was, but her gut insisted on being Ethan's.

Hannah had always been careful. There were plenty of men interested in her, but she'd always kept her distance.

If you asked who she was closest to, it was definitely Ethan.

If the child wasn't his, then at least he could finally give up for good.

"What's wrong with her? Is she sick?" Ethan asked, his voice growing tense.

"She..."

Cordelia paused. "Just get over here quickly. Trust me, if you don't come, you'll definitely regret it."

If the baby was really his, Cordelia wasn't about to let him abandon it.

One way or another, he needed to step up and take care of Hannah and the baby.

Ethan hung up the phone and said to Evelyn, "Mom, I need fetch something outside."

As soon as he finished speaking, he grabbed his coat and left hastily.

Evelyn watched him rush off and sighed helplessly. "Who knows when he'll finally settle down and commit to a relationship?"

When Ethan arrived at Riverside Regional Hospital, Hannah had already been discharged.

He'd come for nothing. Standing downstairs at the inpatient building, he was stranded, not knowing where to go.

He wanted to see Hannah, but figured she probably didn't want to see him—otherwise, she wouldn't have said those things that day.

He was about to turn and leave when two nurses walked out of the building, chatting as they walked.

"Ms. Nguyen is really lucky. Based on her earlier assessments, her odds of getting pregnant weren't high."

"Yeah, the doctor said her chances of conceiving were extremely low. Who would've thought she'd actually succeed?"

"She's so kind and has done so many good things. This is a gift from heaven."

"I wonder who her boyfriend is. I think she's really pretty. I hope the baby's father isn't some ugly guy."

Ethan froze mid-step.

He turned around and called out the two nurses.

"The Ms. Nguyen you're talking about—is her name also Hannah?"

The nurses jumped, instinctively nodding.

Ethan asked, "Is she pregnant?"

The nurses realized they'd let something slip and waved their hands frantically.

"No, no, we didn't say anything."

"You heard wrong. We would never disclose patient information, so don't ask anymore."

The two linked arms and walked away quickly, afraid Ethan would follow them.

Ethan stood downstairs at the inpatient building, his mind spiraling.

Pregnant? Hannah was pregnant? Wasn't she infertile?

The doctor said the probability was extremely low, yet she'd conceived.

His hands were trembling—though he didn't know if it was from shock or joy.

He took out his phone, wanting to call her, then put it down again.

He needed to ask her in person.

When Ethan arrived at Lumora Biotech Inc., the receptionist stopped him.

"Mr. Lawson, Ms. Nguyen said she's not seeing anyone today."

Ethan ignored her and walked straight inside.

Hannah's office door was closed. He pushed it fowards—it was locked from the inside.

He stood at the door, took a deep breath, then called out.

"Hannah, come out."

No sound came from inside.

He waited a moment, then called out again.

"Hannah, if you don't come out, I'm not leaving. You made me fall for you, and you slept witth me. Now you're trying to take my child from me too?"

Staff members in the hallway poked their heads out, eyes wide in shock.

What kind of bombshell gossip was this?

Some people were already whispering, barely able to resist rushing over to get the full story.

"I knew it would be like this—the two of them alone together!"

"Don't exaggerate. There weren't just alone. Ms. Nguyen is also a woman, what's abnormal about that?"

"Then what's the deal with the baby in her belly? Isn't Ms. Nguyen...?"

The crowd kept exchanging glances, the chatter growing louder. Many eyes were filled with barely suppressed excitement.

Anyone who wasn't deliberately turning a blind eye could tell that Ethan liked Hannah.

Hannah seemed cold on the surface, but every time something happened to Ethan, she was always the first to step up.

If that wasn't love, it's hard to imagine what was.

Hearing the increasingly chaotic commotion outside, Hannah got overwhelmed.

The door opened, and Hannah stood in the doorway. Her face was a bit pale, but her back remained straight.

Ethan stared at her, his eyes red.

"Is the baby in your belly mine?"

Hannah looked at Ethan and went silent briefly

"Does it matter?" Her voice was unusually calm. "The baby is mine. That's enough."

Ethan took a step forward. "Hannah, look me in the eye and answer me. Is the baby mine or not? Don't avoid it this time. I have a right to know the truth."

Hannah didn't dodge the question. She raised her head and met Ethan's gaze.

"Ethan, I won't use the baby to force you to marry me, and I won't let it become a bargaining chip between us."

"I've waited a long time for this baby. No matter whose it is, I'm going to have it and raise it myself."

"If you would like to see him, you're welcome. If not, I won't force you."

Hannah's voice wasn't loud, but Ethan heard every word clearly.

Ethan glanced at her, and asked, "What about you? Aren't you going to ask if I'm willing?"

Hannah's tone was flat. "That's your choice."

Ethan looked at Hannah in disbelief. He was silent for a long time before speaking.

"Hannah, you're really heartless."

After saying this, Ethan turned and left, his retreating figure looking somewhat disheveled.

Hannah watched Ethan quietly.

She gently placed her hand on her lower abdomen. She wasn't heartless—she had simply made the choice she believed in. That was all.
