Chapter 45 – The Hunt

Chapter 45 – The Hunt
The night was cold, and the New York streets, lit by neon signs and car headlights, served as a silent stage for Dante and Isabella's hunt. They walked quickly, alert to every movement, every shadow. The stalker was no ordinary man—he was calculating, always a few steps ahead, and seemed to enjoy the game of cat and mouse.

Dante kept his hands in his coat pockets, his gaze steady, but his body betrayed tension. Isabella, beside him, held her cell phone open to a network of contacts she had set up: street cameras, informants, and tracking data.

"Are you sure this is the way?" Dante asked, glancing at the surrounding buildings.

Isabella nodded, not taking her eyes off the screen. "Absolutely. He's been through this area for the last two hours. He's close."

Dante snorted. "This guy's like a ghost. Every time we find a clue, he disappears." "Ghosts leave traces too," Isabella replied, her voice firm. "And I always find the traces."

They walked down a narrow alley, where the air smelled of rust and damp garbage. There, a silhouette waited, motionless, as if it had anticipated their arrival. The stalker.

He was hooded, but the smile that escaped as he stepped forward was unmistakable. "Finally. You took your time."

Dante advanced immediately, but Isabella extended her arm, stopping him. She took a firm step forward, looking the man in the eye.

"There's no point in running anymore," he said. "Helena is with Alexander."

The stalker tilted his head, as if savoring the information. He was silent for a few seconds, analyzing. Then he let out a low laugh. "Alexander… of course it would be him."

Dante clenched his fists, ready to attack, but the stalker raised his hand. "Don't worry." You can go. I'll be right behind you.

His tone was dangerous, full of confidence, as if everything had already been written. Isabella exchanged a quick glance with Dante, uncertain, but decided not to argue.

"Let's go," she said.

Dante, against his instincts, followed beside her. As they walked away, the stalker remained still, his eyes glowing in the darkness. He knew exactly what he was doing.

The return to Alexander's company was silent. Dante was restless, his heart racing. He hadn't seen Helena in years. And now, he was minutes away from seeing her again. Isabella, on the other hand, was reflecting on the stalker's behavior. That calm, that permission… it wasn't carelessness. It was part of something bigger.

They arrived at the company's imposing building. The security guards immediately let them in, recognizing them both. Isabella entered first, her heels echoing through the hall to the elevator. Dante could barely control his anxiety, fidgeting with his fingers compulsively.

When the elevator doors opened on the top floor, there she was.

Helena.

Time seemed to freeze. Dante stared at her as if he'd seen a ghost. The years hadn't erased the memory of her, but seeing her there, real, before him, brought a flood of contradictory feelings: anger, longing, relief, pain.

Helena's eyes widened at the sight of him. For a moment, it seemed the words had disappeared from their mouths. Then Dante took a step forward.

"Helena…" His voice trailed off, broken.

She took a deep breath, her eyes welling up. "Dante."

The reunion was silent, but charged with emotion. Isabella watched from afar, respecting the moment. To her, Helena wasn't just a name in a dossier or a shadow from Alexander's past—she was a real, vulnerable woman, a fundamental part of this plot.

Isabella took a few steps forward, extending her hand. "You must be Helena."

Helena looked at her curiously, then accepted the handshake. "And you are…?"

"Isabella. I work with Alexander."

Helena smiled slightly, almost suspiciously. "So you're the 'she' Alexander spoke of."

Isabella arched her eyebrow in surprise. "He said that?"

Before the silence could become awkward, Alexander entered the room. His presence always changed the air, thickening it. He looked at Dante and Helena, assessing every detail of their reunion, then at Isabella, and gave a small smile.

"I see you've met before."

Helena stared at him firmly. "And now?"

Alexander walked to his desk, resting his hands on it. "Now, we wait."

"We wait for what?" Dante asked irritably.

Alexander didn't answer immediately. He turned to the panoramic window, watching the city lights. "He's coming."

A heavy silence fell over everyone. Helena felt a shiver run down her spine. Dante and Isabella exchanged a quick glance, confirming what they had already feared: the stalker hadn't given up. He was about to arrive.

Outside, the night remained cold. A black car pulled up discreetly in front of Alexander's company. The stalker stepped out of the vehicle with measured steps, his hood still partially covering his face. He looked up at the building, as if observing a stage set for the final scene.

The security guards noticed him, but strangely didn't move. Some fell silent, as if they already knew who he was. Others looked away, intimidated by his presence.

The stalker walked down the hall calmly, almost unhurriedly, as if invited. His eyes shone with satisfaction. Everything was going exactly as he had predicted.

On the top floor, Helena felt her heart race for no apparent reason. She looked at Alexander, who remained too calm. Dante clenched his fists, ready to fight. Isabella, though firm, couldn't shake the feeling they were walking into a trap.

And then, the elevator doors opened.

The stalker's hooded figure appeared, his footsteps echoing across the marble floor. He entered the office with the calm of someone returning to their own home.

Everyone held their breath.

Helena took a step back, her eyes wide. Dante instinctively advanced, but Alexander held up his hand, stopping him.

The stalker removed his hood, revealing his face partially illuminated by the office's soft light. A cold smile formed on his lips.

"Finally," he said, his voice thick with satisfaction. "Everyone gathered, as it should be."

The air felt electrified. Isabella, Helena, Dante, and Alexander stood motionless, each overcome with a mixture of fear, anger, and anticipation.

The end was approaching. All truths were about to be revealed.
