Chapter Hundred and seven

Xander's POV

Bella had finally left to sleep in her bedroom.

Noah was asleep in his room too.

The apartment was quiet except for the sound of my own heartbeat.

I felt restless so I stayed awake to keep watch over the house. I didn't like the way Daniel looked at Bella before he left.

I didn’t trust Daniel at all. Only I knew what he was capable of… only I did.

I sat in the dark living room and placed my eyes on the door. I didn't move or flinch, just watching.

Then something clicked at the doorknob.

My body went rigid immediately.

There was another click again. It sounded like… someone was trying to pick the lock.

I stood up quietly and picked up a bat I had hidden earlier under the table.

A low mutter came from outside. It sounded like… Daniel.

“Come on… come on… just open…”

I reached the door just as the lock turned.

The door creaked open an inch, then I yanked it fully open.

Daniel stumbled forward and froze when he saw me.

“Where is she?” he demanded. “Where’s Bella? She needs to listen to me…she can’t keep choosing you, she can’t…”

“Step back, I said slowly.

He tried to push past me but that was a wrong move.

I grabbed his wrist before he could get inside.

He snarled, “Let go of me!”

“You tried to break into her home,” I said. “In the middle of the night. While she slept. While my son slept.”

“I love her!” he screamed. “She belongs with me! You don’t get to take everything… not after everything we have together… you don't get to do that.”

He tried to twist free but I didn’t give him the chance.

I bent his wrist back sharply and there was a loud crack.

Daniel screamed, collapsing to his knees and clutching his arm.

Bella jolted awake at the sound of his scream and rushed toward us with fear in her eyes.

“Xander! Oh my God! what happened?!”

Daniel looked up at her with tear-filled eyes.

“He… he broke my hand! Bella, he broke my hand! He’s dangerous… look at him!”

I stepped between them immediately.

“Don’t come any closer,” I warned Daniel.

Bella grabbed my arm, trembling. “Xander… What's going on? You didn’t have to…”

“He tried to break in,” I said, keeping my eyes on him. “It was a grave mistake on his part, not when I'm around. I knew he was going to come back, I just knew it ”

Daniel was rocking slightly, holding his broken wrist against his chest.

“You’re choosing him?” he spat at Bella. “After everything I’ve done for you? After I stayed when everyone else left? You think he’s going to save you? He’s going to ruin you! He’s going to..”

“Stop,” Bella whispered, voice shaking.

But he kept going.

“You’re mine, Bella. You were supposed to love me. You were supposed to pick me, not him. We were supposed to move in together with Noah.”

“Enough,” Bella snapped. “How… How could you? I trusted you, Daniel. Has it really gotten to the extent of breaking into my house?” her voice shook and a tear slipped out of its socket.

She sniffed and wiped her eyes. “If you don’t leave now, I’ll call the police and file for a restraining order tonight.”

His face twisted as he looked at Bella.

Then he hissed, “This isn’t over.”

“Yes,” I said coldly. “It is.”

His jaw clenched. “You think you’re scaring me?”

“No,” I said, leaning closer. “I think I’m informing you.”

Bella whispered. “Xander… please stop. I don’t like seeing this. I… I already warned him.”

I immediately stepped back and softened my voice.
“He’s not going to try anything anymore. I’m here.”

Daniel let out a bitter laugh. “She doesn’t need your protection you psycho”

“Then why,” I snapped, “were you sneaking into her house in the middle of the night? From what I see here, you're the psycho. Leave now… GDC.”

He went dead silent. His mouth fell as he stared at me.

Shit! I just called him GDC in front of Bella. I hoped she didn't hear that.

I dragged him to the door, opened it, and pushed him out into the street.

“You need medical attention,” I spat in his face. “Get it. And stay away. Next time I won’t just break your hand.”

He turned back with wild eyes. “Bella… Bella please don’t let him… let me talk to you, Bella. You know me, Bella… you do!”

I slammed the door in his face before he could finish. Then I turned to her.

She was shaking and staring at me wide-eyed.

She was probably in shock at everything that has just happened and not because of what I said… hopefully.

I walked toward her slowly to comfort her. “Bella…”

“Bella…” I whispered her name again as I stepped closer.

Her breaths were shallow and her hands trembled violently.

“Hey,” I said softly, reaching out to her. “Look at me.”

She swallowed hard, finally dragging her eyes up to mine.

“Xander…” her voice cracked. “That was… God, I don’t even know what that was.”

“I know,” I murmured. “I know.”

“He… he broke into my house,” she whispered, still processing. “He actually… tried to force his way in.”

“Yes, and if I hadn’t been awake, he would’ve walked straight into your bedroom.”

Her knees buckled a little but I caught her instantly.

She leaned into me with her eyes squeezed shut.

“He could’ve hurt me,” she whispered. “H… he could’ve hurt Noah.”

“He didn’t,” I said firmly. “Because I was here.”

I wrapped an arm around her waist, and patted her back. “Don't worry, I'm here. You're fine.”

After a moment she pulled back slightly and looked at me again.

A small and bitter laugh escaped from her.
Then tears spilled over her skin.

Her voice cracked. “You… you just called him… GDC.”

Fuck! She heard that.
