"She is fine," the older doctor said for the umpteenth time but the Mafia King wasn't listening to him.

His gaze was locked on the hospital bed. Layla lay fast asleep, her head carefully wrapped with a white bandage. She had been changed out of her beautiful golden dress and was dressed in drab hospital clothes.

"The CT scan didn't show any fractures and the injury isn't deep and should be healed in a few days. She was given drugs for the pain and will likely be asleep until the early hours of tomorrow."

"What about the baby?"

"I do not know but there is no indication that she received trauma around her abdomen. Because she is asleep, I do not want to conduct any tests that require moving her. She just needs some rest."

"Are you sure?" Davian asked, lifting his dark eyes to look at the doctor.

The doctor took a step back and swallowed. "Yes," he replied. His voice was surprisingly steady despite the shakiness in his hands.

A movement caught his eye and he turned to see Daniel standing outside the glass door. His bleeding ear had been stitched and bandaged. He made a sign with his fingers and Davian's expression darkened.

He turned his attention to the doctor. "The instant something changes, let me know immediately."

The doctor nodded rapidly, a slight relief on his face as he realized the Mafia King would be leaving. "Not a moment later."

Davian's lips twitched as his eyes moved to the bed. She was sleeping peacefully, not a sign of the trauma to her head showed on her pretty face.

He wanted to stay with her but he had to take care of this right now. Someone had the guts to attack her. Did they not know who she was?

He intended to take care of this very thoroughly. Whoever they were or whoever sent them would regret going after his mate.

He didn't rack his brain over who might have done it; it was irrelevant. Who they were wouldn't change his plans for them.

He slowly turned and walked out of her room, a hardened look on his face. As soon as he stepped out the door, Daniel walked closer.

"He is at the mansion. Nick is also here to tell you all the information he has found in the meantime."

"Okay," he said as he started towards the exit.

Black cars filled the parking lot. He had taken more than enough security for the off chance that he would be attacked on the way to the hospital.

"Alpha Davian," Nick said and rushed forward, bowing slightly.

"Tell me on the drive," he said and walked past Nick towards the car he had driven in.

Daniel held the door open and Davian got in. Nick got in after him and he placed the items he was holding on his lap. Aside from the tablet, there was a phone that didn't quite look like it was for the secretary.

"Her attacker was Arthur," Nick announced.

Davian didn't flinch nor was he surprised rather he was disappointed. "Was he working alone?"

"No, I don't think so. I have been going through his phone and he seemed to be in constant contact with a number. Their text messages don't say anything about the attack. I checked the number and found that it is a burner number and we have no immediate way of finding out who it belongs to."

"They must have some way to communicate. I will find out by myself."

Nick nodded and he kept his mouth sealed for the rest of the ride. It was pretty clear the Mafia King was furious and it was best not to get on his bad side.

The car didn't come to a full stop in front of the mansion before Davian opened the door and jumped out.

He was not worried about her safety in the hospital because not only had he left more than enough men watching the building, he had also left three guards watching her room.

"This way," Nick said and led him towards the back of the compound. On the grass hidden by the darkness of the high wall was Arthur.

He was strapped to a chair and his mouth was stuffed with a dirty rag. He was pale and barely had any strength to lift himself. His right arm was openly bleeding from where he had been shot.

"Arthur," Davian called.

His eyes flew open and panic filled his pupils. He looked like he was trying to speak but the gag in his mouth stopped him.

Davian stretched out his hand and a pistol with a suppressor appeared almost instantly. The black of the gun matched perfectly with the look in his eyes.

He walked up to the chair and shot Arthur's right leg. The shot only made a soft click sound because of the silencer. Arthur's muffled screams were louder than the shot.

Davian lifted his leg and pressed it right onto his injury and leaned forward. "I am only going to ask once," his voice was ice cold and shivers ran through the bleeding man.

Arthur nodded rapidly as the pain made it too hard to think. He had already lost enough blood; if he lost any more, he would lose consciousness.

"Who sent you?" Davian asked as he pulled the gag out of his mouth.

"Melissa," he coughed.

"Melissa?" He asked with a frown; the name was awfully familiar.

Arthur coughed hard, his throat sore from having the cloth shoved so deep. He was shocked he had been able to breathe despite the cloth.

"H-her mother."

"She is in Reef City?"

"Yes, in Regio,” he gasped. The pain made it hard to think.

"The slums?" He asked with a dark look in his eyes.

Regio was technically Nolan's territory but it was more a free-for-all zone. As long as Nolan wasn’t bothered, anything goes.

He had a feeling this was the place the butler had gone to a few weeks ago. He had tried to follow his whereabouts after his suspicious disappearance during the night but he had let it go when he left his territory.

It wasn't that he forgot or didn't find him suspicious but he had thought his butler would be smart enough not to try and cross him. Guess he was wrong.

He dug his shiny derby into his bleeding thigh and Arthur let out another scream but Davian quickly silenced that by putting the gun into his mouth.

The long suppressor pressed against the back of his throat and he gagged but Davian didn't pull the gun away.

"I thought you were smart, Arthur."

He tried to speak through the pain and the gun in his mouth but could only make muffled sounds.

"Where is she right now?" He asked as he slowly pulled the gun from the back of his throat but didn't completely take it out.

"Dark district motel, room 16. I am sorry Alpha Davian, I never—"

Blood spurted out of the back of his head and his brain plastered the wall.

Davian winced at the stain on his pants and on his hand holding the gun. He moved away immediately, leaving the gun hanging off the dead man's mouth.

His throat made a gurgling sound as blood ran down but his eyes were lifeless. He was dead as soon as the shot hit.

Nick was quick to hand him a napkin and Davian wiped himself. His secretary stood close, anticipating Davian's orders.

"Take pictures and clean this up. Then make your way to room 16. Show Melissa the pictures and tell her if I so much as hear she is in Reef City, I'll put a bullet in her brain like I did Arthur. She has until sunrise.”

"Yes, Alpha,” Nick nodded and walked away to do his orders.

Davian didn't care for the reason for their attack; it was irrelevant. He only intended to make sure it never happened again.
