Chapter 59 The Wedding Day
The morning of my wedding, I woke to rain.
Heavy. Relentless. Drumming against windows. The weather forecast had promised sunshine. Clear skies. Perfect conditions.
Instead, storm clouds covered everything. Dark and ominous.
“It’s a sign,” Aunt Clara said. Helping me into my dress. White silk that Elena had chosen months ago. Before everything changed. “Rain on your wedding day means good luck.”
“Or it means the universe is crying for my poor life choices.” I tried to smile. Failed. “I’m marrying into a world of conspiracy and danger. Maybe the rain is appropriate.”
“Stop that. You’re marrying a man who loves you. Who’d die for you? That’s rare. Special.” She zipped the back carefully. “Everything else is just noise.”
But the noise was deafening. The Collective watched. Waited. The message from yesterday still burns in my mind. We both know you’re lying.
They knew I wasn’t really joining them. Knew I was playing a game. But they hadn’t stopped me and hadn’t exposed me.
Why?
A knock on the door. Tessa entered. She’d flown in yesterday and brought normalcy with her. Reminded me who I was before all this.
“You look amazing,” she said. Eyes going wet. “Like a real bride. Not like someone about to walk into a supernatural war zone.”
“That’s the idea.” I turned in the mirror. The dress was beautiful. Simple. Elegant. Everything I would have chosen in another life. “How do I look? Honestly?”
“Terrified. But also ready. Like you’re about to fight a battle instead of getting married.” She hugged me carefully. Avoiding the dress. “But that’s kind of your thing now. Fighting battles in pretty dresses.”
Elena arrived next. Professional. Distant. The friendship we’d had was gone. Replaced by careful politeness.
“Hair and makeup are ready. We have forty-five minutes before the ceremony.” She consulted her tablet. “Everything’s on schedule despite the weather.”
“Thank you. For everything.” I meant it. Despite her betrayal. Despite everything. She’d made this day happen. “I know things are different between us now. But I appreciate what you’ve done.”
Something flickered across her face. Regret maybe. Or guilt. “You’re welcome. I hope you’re happy. Despite everything.”
She left before I could respond.
“What was that about?” Tessa asked. “You two have the weirdest energy.”
“Long story. Involving secret conspiracies and dead parents. The usual.” I sat for hair and makeup. Let professionals work. Transform me into a bride.
Through the bond, I felt Lycian. Nervous. Excited. Worried. All at once. He was getting ready across the estate. Surrounded by Damien and Cade. Probably being made fun of relentlessly.
How are you? I sent through the bond.
Terrified. You?
Same. But I was terrified. Like jumping off a cliff terrified.
That’s romantic. I felt his amusement. I love you. Can’t wait to actually marry you.
Me too. See you soon.
The ceremony was at four. Outdoor venue despite the rain. Massive tent. White flowers. Elegant decorations. Two hundred guests. Security everywhere.
I walked through the venue an hour before. Checked details. Made sure everything was perfect.
Lycian had been right. We’d tripled security. Every guest vetted. Every entrance is monitored. Guards in formal wear. Blending but present.
If the Collective tried anything, we’d know immediately.
But part of me wondered if that was the point. If they wanted us paranoid. Distracted. Focused on threats that might not come.
“You ready?” Thaddeus found me near the altar. He’d offered to walk me down the aisle. Stand in for my father. The gesture made me cry. “It’s almost time.”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I adjusted my dress. Smoothed invisible wrinkles. “Thank you. For this. For giving me away. It means everything.”
“You’re family. Have been since Lycian brought you home after you spilled champagne on him.” He almost smiled. “My son chose well. Better than he deserved.”
“I’m the one who doesn’t deserve him.”
“No. You’re exactly what he needs. What this pack needs.” He offered his arm. “Now let’s get you married before you change your mind.”
Music started. Guests stood. The tent went quiet. Waiting.
I took Thaddeus’s arm. Let him lead me down the aisle. Each step felt surreal. Like watching someone else’s wedding. Someone else’s life.
Then I saw Lycian. Standing at the altar. Wearing a dark suit. Looking devastating. His eyes found mine. Everything else faded.
Just him. Just us. Just this moment.
Through the bond, I felt his love. Overwhelming. Complete. Perfect.
We reached the altar. Thaddeus placed my hand in Lycian’s. Stepped back.
“Take care of her,” Thaddeus said. Quiet enough only we heard. “She’s precious.”
“I know. I will.” Lycian squeezed my hand. “Always.”
The officiant began. Words about love and commitment. About choosing each other every day. About building a life together.
I barely heard. Too focused on Lycian. On the way, he looked at me. Like I was his entire world.
“The couple has written their own vows,” the officiant said. “Lycian, please begin.”
Lycian took both my hands. His was shaking slightly. “Elowen. About a year ago, you spilled champagne on me. I was annoyed. You were mortified. Neither of us knew that moment would change everything.”
Quiet laughter from guests. I smiled through tears already forming.
“You’ve challenged me. Pushed me to be better. Stronger. More than just a future Alpha. You’ve shown me what real strength looks like. Not power or control. But kindness. Courage. Refusing to quit no matter how hard things get.” His voice cracked. “I love you. Completely. Forever. In this life and whatever comes after. You’re my mate. My bond. My everything. And I promise to spend every day proving I’m worthy of you.”
Tears spilled down my cheeks. Someone handed me tissues. Probably Tessa.
“Elowen,” the officiant prompted. “Your vows.”
I took a shaky breath. “Lycian. I came to Mooncrest University looking for a fresh start. A normal life. Instead, I found you. Found a world I didn’t know existed. Found family and purpose and love I never imagined.”
His thumbs wiped my tears. Gentle. Perfect.
“You’ve protected me. Believed in me. Loved me when I couldn’t love myself. You’ve fought beside me. Held me through nightmares. Made me laugh when I wanted to cry.” I gripped his hands tighter. “I’m not perfect. I’m human in a wolf world. I’m stubborn and scared and still figuring things out. But I love you. With everything I am. Everything I’ll ever be. And I promise to choose you. Every single day. No matter what comes.”
“The rings,” the officiant said.
Damien stepped forward. Handed Lycian a simple gold band. My ring.
Lycian slid it on my finger. “With this ring, I claim you as mine. My mate. My wife. My Luna.”
I took his ring from Damien. Slid it onto Lycian’s hand. “With this ring, I claim you as mine. My mate. My husband. My Alpha.”
“Then by the power vested in me, and witnessed by this pack, I pronounce you married. Bonded. United.” The officiant smiled. “You may kiss your bride.”
Lycian pulled me close. Kissed me soft and sweet. The bond exploded between us. Bright and warm and perfect.
Guests erupted. Cheering. Clapping. Celebrating.
We broke apart. Lycian rested his forehead against mine. “Hi, wife.”
“Hi, husband.”
“Ready for forever?”
“With you? Always.”
The reception was beautiful. Dinner. Dancing. Toasts that made everyone laugh and cry.
Damien’s toast was ridiculous. “I knew Lycian was serious when he stopped complaining about the champagne stain. That’s when I realized. My brother is completely whipped. And I couldn’t be happier about it.”
Thaddeus’s toast was emotional. “My son has found his equal. His match. Someone who makes him better. That’s all any parent wants. Welcome to the family, Elowen. Officially.”
Aunt Clara’s toast destroyed me. “I raised this girl alone. I watched her fight for everything. Overcome everything. Today, she gets the happiness she always deserved. Take care of her, Lycian. She’s my whole heart.”
We danced. First dance as husband and wife. Lycian held me close. We moved slowly. Ignoring the music. Just swaying.
“I love you,” he whispered. “Forever doesn’t feel long enough.”
“Then we’ll have to make every moment count.”
The night continued. Perfect. Magical. Everything a wedding should be.
But around eleven, I felt it. Through the bond. Lycian’s sudden tension.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. Still swaying. Pretending everything was fine.
“Cade just signaled. Someone’s here. Someone who wasn’t on the guest list.” His hand tightened on my waist. “Keep dancing. Act normal. Security is going to intercept.”
My heart was beating. But I smiled. Laughed. Played the happy bride.
Through the crowd, I saw Cade moving. Damien following. Heading toward the entrance.
Then I saw her. Standing at the edge of the tent. Watching. Wearing all black. Silver hair pulled back.
An older woman. Maybe sixty. But her eyes were young. Sharp. Calculating.
She smiled when our eyes met. Raised a glass in silent toast.
Then security reached her. She didn’t resist. Just let them escort her out. Calm. Unhurried.
Like she’d accomplished exactly what she came for.
My phone buzzed in my hidden pocket. Unknown number.
Beautiful ceremony. You look lovely in white. Enjoy your honeymoon. We’ll talk when you return. There’s much to discuss about your future with the Collective.
Congratulations, Mrs. Valor.
With love, The Council of Silver
The screen went black.
And I realized with cold certainty.
Tonight wasn’t the end of anything.
It was just the beginning.
