Chapter 205 Lily, I Know I Was Wrong
Dennis was the one who knew exactly what had happened that day.
After the accident, the driver did not attempt a rescueinstead, he fled the scene.
It was Dennis who approached to assess the situation and carried Lily out from beneath the wreckage.
Lily gazed at Dennis in bewilderment. Why would he say that?
Michael frowned, his tone grave. “What do you know? After the crash, Lily was found alone by the roadside, crying. Both the driver and my parents died in the explosion, and the driver’s body was found near the car door, clearly having returned to try and save them.”
Lily recalled that this was the conclusion reached by the police at the time.
But what prompted Dennis to challenge that account?
Meeting Lily’s gaze, Dennis averted his eyes. “Perhaps it was a passerby who helped her out?”
He himself could not fathom why the driver had suddenly turned back.
Maybe his conscience kicked in, but the man was dead now, so there was no way to know the reason.
Michael replied, “That’s impossible. The road had only recently opened, there were no surveillance cameras, and hardly anyone ever passed through.”
Lily looked at Dennis. “It’s a pity I can’t remember the details of the accident now. Otherwise, I’d know for certain who pulled me out.”
There was no way she would have simply sat by the roadside, crying, without someone having rescued her from beneath the car.
Someone must have carried her out.
Dennis’s eyes grew distant and thoughtful.
Ultimately, he said nothing more.
He dared not tell her that he himself had been present at the scene.
Michael declared with conviction, “Lily, this matter has been thoroughly investigated. It was Sophie’s father who saved you. I know you have grievances against her, but this is the truth.”
Though Sophie’s character was questionable, it did not alter the fact that her father had rendered the Roberts family an invaluable service.
Lily listened, a mocking glint flashing in her eyes.
“I’ve never denied it. But consider the life Sophie has led in the Roberts family these yearsand the life I’ve led. I owe her nothing now.”
Her expression was frigid; moreover, in her previous life, she had even been killed by Sophie.
She owed nothing to anyone in the Roberts family.
Michael gave a bitter smile—he understood all too well.
Lily spoke coldly, “If you wish to repay a debt, do so yourselves. Don’t drag me into it.”
With that, she took Dennis’s hand and walked away.
Michael had intended to prevent Dennis from approaching, but at that moment, he dared not pursue them.
He feared that if he truly angered Lily, she would never speak to him again.
At that moment, Peter called. “Michael, I’ve heard from my people that you sent Lily away?”
“I took her home. She couldn’t possibly stay at the hospital forever.”
“I’ll come find her after I finish work. There are things yet to be settled. She insists on suing Austin, destroying his career and making him the laughingstock of everyone.”
Michael felt weary. “Lily isn’t to blame for this. Austin and Sophie brought it upon themselves.”
“Wasn’t it Austin who did this? What does Sophie have to do with it?”
“That’s what Sophie told you, isn’t it?”
Michael had anticipated thisSophie was always scheming and would never tell Peter the truth.
“Michael, I know you have issues with Sophie, but you can’t simply doubt her word because you favor Lily.”
“Peter, it was Sophie who copied Lily’s files. Austin merely saw it and failed to intervene.”
Peter hesitated. “That’s impossible.”
After all, Sophie had always been obedient and sensible—she never needed instruction.
“There’s video evidence. You only need to check the records at the police station. Sophie orchestrated everything; Lily had nothing to do with it.”
With that, Michael hung up. No matter what happened, he would not allow the Roberts family to fall apart.
They were seven siblings, they must remain united.
He was determined to resolve every misunderstanding himself.
Lily and Dennis returned to her apartment.
She was in a foul mood, though she did not show it in Dennis’s presence.
She glanced at him. “I’ve been busy these past few days and haven’t tidied up.”
“You went to the hospital to see Michael?”
“Something like that. I’m going to change my clothes.”
Lily turned and retreated to her bedroom, intent on composing herself.
Dennis waited outside when Lily’s phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID—Mark—and answered casually. Mark’s voice came through, “I’m guessing you’re home now. There’s something important I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” Dennis asked, and the line went dead with silence.
Mark, panic-stricken, stammered, “Why are you answering? Is Lily not there?”
“Disappointed? If you have something to say, just say it.” Dennis’s eyes narrowed—what was Mark calling so late for?
What urgent matter did he wish to discuss with Lily?
“I just wanted to compliment you, really. My phone is about to die, so I’ll stop here.” Mark hung up in a panic, nearly scared out of his wits.
He needed to hide—he feared for his life.
Dennis stared at the disconnected call, certain Mark had nothing good to say about him.
Soon, Lily emerged, freshly changed.
Her mood had steadied somewhat. “Thank you for worrying about me.”
In this world, aside from Dennis, there was likely no one else who would rush to find her simply because she hadn’t answered her phone or replied to a message.
Dennis looked at her deeply. “Are you truly all right?”
“What could possibly be wrong? Michael has finally seen Sophie’s true colors. He’s cautious with me now—he won’t do anything.”
Lily deliberately avoided mentioning Peter.
Dennis understood. He paused, then asked, “You really can’t remember what happened during the accident?”
“No. The doctor said it’s a trauma response—my mind blocked out the memory to protect me.” Lily had never tried to recall the accident before.
But today, she felt she ought to remember. She wanted to know whether her rescuer had truly been the driver.
Dennis refrained from further questioning. “It’s late. Get some rest. Call me if you need anything.”
“All right.” Lily watched him leave. After closing the door, she crouched down behind it.
She didn’t want Dennis caught up in this—Peter’s temperament was unpredictable; he’d run with delinquents since middle school.
Even now, he maintained ties with unsavory characters and had settled more than a few disputes.
Peter relied on his handsome face to carve out a place in the entertainment industry, eventually becoming a nominee for Best Actor.
Last year, he narrowly missed the award.
This year, barring unforeseen events, Peter would claim the title thanks to a blockbuster film script and a currently airing television drama.
Yet both the film and television scripts were written by her.
But she would not allow herself to be threatened or intimidated by Peter forever.
Lily had already made up her mind—it remained to be seen how much Peter valued this year’s Best Actor award.
The next day, Lily woke naturally, unhurried.
That afternoon, she returned to campus, intending to visit the team base and observe their training.
Arriving at the base entrance, she found it surrounded by a crowd, with girls holding banners emblazoned with Peter’s name.
He had actually come to the base.
Lily entered and saw Peter encircled by fans.
Peter immediately approached her. “Let me introduce everyone—this is my sister Lily, the person most important to me.”
Screams erupted from the crowd.
Lily’s expression was stern; she lowered her voice. “What are you doing? I have nothing to do with the Roberts family anymore.”
Was he trying to guilt-trip her again?
“You misunderstand. I’m here to reconcile. Michael explained everything to me yesterday—I was misled by Sophie, which is why I treated you that way.” He had checked the video himself that morning and confirmed Lily’s innocence.
Peter continued, “It wasn’t intentional. Please, don’t be angry with me, all right?”
