Chapter 72 The Tarnished Ring
Chapter 72 The Tarnished Ring
By mid-afternoon they had decided to take a much-needed reading break. They had discovered many things about her family but nothing on how to reforge a magical heirloom. Shayne’s belly had begun to growl so Kevin was helping Shayne in the kitchen as they whipped up lunch.
Brian had decided to go to scour the crash site to see if he could find the original missing pieces of the locket chain. He was sure that it would be a vital piece of helping to save Jeffrey’s life. He has insisted it would be in the ditch near where Shayne was found.
Kevin was leaning against the counter as she made deli sandwiches for the three of them. They hadn’t seen hide nor hair of Jamie since Jeffrey left for Indianapolis. He was making faces and Shayne knew she probably wouldn’t like what he was about to say.
“I need to tell you something,” he said. “Jeffrey made Brian and I promise after the wedding that if something happened to him, that we would take care of you.” Kevin said gently. “I hope it never comes to this because Jeffrey is my friend. But I’m prepared to keep my promise. I know that I could never take his place, but I would make a good husband to you.”
“You're a good man Kevin, but I could never let you do that. In time, I would probably love you. But a part of my heart would always belong to Jeffrey, and I think you would come to hate me for it.” Shayne said as turned and grabbed the edge of the kitchen sink.
“I believe we are going to find a way to save him, but in the meantime, I didn't want you to think that you would ever be alone. I will always be here for you and Bean.” He walked up behind her and wrapped his arm around her from behind and placed his hand over her favorite green tee shirt where it covered her belly as if he were protecting the baby. He was so close to her she could feel his breath on the back of her neck as her view narrowed, and her eyes darkened. The tattletale vignette began to form as she felt the premonition begin. She clung to Kevin as the world around her fell away.
Shayne found herself in her own body standing next to Kevin in a church. She was in a dark blue bridesmaid dress while Brian was dressed in a tux and stood beside her on the steps of the alter. A little red haired boy in a matching tux sat in the floor between his legs pushing a toy car with two golden wedding rings tied in the back. A little auburn girl near the boys age was standing next to her, happily throwing rose petals into the air from a tiny white basket. Kevin was in a sharp white tuxedo with a massive ring on his right hand. He had a huge smile on his face. It was the brightest that Shayne had ever seen. Tears formed in his eyes as he watched a Hispanic woman in a beautiful white dress and cathedral length veil coming down the aisle towards him. Her eyes were misty with happy tears and Shayne honestly thought she was the most beautiful woman on the planet.
As the vision faded, Shayne’s head spun and her feet felt completely tangled. She was holding on to sink for dear life as Kevin steadied her. One of her hands went to her abdomen just below his hand. Happy tears were flowing freely down her cheeks.
“You just had a vision didn't you?” Kevin said.
Shane couldn't speak yet she just nodded her head. She was so overcome with emotions.
“What did you see?” He asked her as he eyed her speculatively.
“Hope, I saw hope. I saw that the future is not as set in stone. Things changed.” Shayne finally managed to say.
“Isn't that proof of what I've been saying? Doesn't that mean we shouldn’t give up.” Kevin said hopefully. He leaned in and kissed her temple just as he had done in the vision she had all those weeks ago.
“If I were to give up, I would be doing you the greatest disservice. Kevin, I just saw your wedding day. I saw the woman you're going to marry and how happy you were. She's so beautiful. I think she's Hispanic. She had dark hair and huge brown eyes.” She hugged him happily. “And Kevin, there was a huge super bowl ring on your hand.” Shayne told him.
“I don't understand why the ring is important. I want to know who the girl is.” Kevin said insistently.
“Unfortunately I can't tell you that part. I've never seen her before. I only get flashes of pictures, there’s no sound. But I could tell from your face that you love her and that she loves you. Your wedding is beautiful.” Shayne said.
“What does the ring mean?” Kevin said.
“The ring is important because when I went to the future things were different . You went pro, but you never made it to the super bowl. You blew out your knee the first year and that's how you got into journalism. In that timeline, I hadn't survived. You were battling a cocaine addiction because of the guilt and you were losing badly. But now, you don't mess up your knee. You don't battle addiction and you go to the super bowl! That means we are already changing what happens.”
“If the future can be changed for you, it means the future can be changed for Jeffrey. He doesn't have to die and I don't have to raise his child alone. It means there's hope Kevin. I don't know how I'm going to fix the chain, but I know now that I can.” Shayne said as her heart swelled.
“Don’t worry, we will figure it out. Brian and I are going to help you.” Kevin said as he hugged her back.
