Chapter 30 WHAT WE'RE BECOMING

Chapter 30 WHAT WE'RE BECOMING
Sera's POV

The voices stopped calling my name.

That was worse than when they started.

I stood at the hospital window looking down at the street below. Hundreds of women stood there. Former Breeders. All of them transformed. All of them staring up at me with eyes that glowed faintly in the darkness.

Waiting.

"What do they want?" Kade asked. He'd positioned himself between me and the door. Military instincts even now.

"I don't know," I replied. But that was a lie.

I knew exactly what they wanted.

They wanted me to join them. To stop fighting the transformation. To become what we were all evolving into.

My skin tingled. I felt the change happening inside me. Cells rewriting. DNA evolving. Becoming something that wasn't quite human anymore.

"Sera," Ryker said carefully. "Your vitals are spiking. Heart rate elevated. Body temperature rising. The transformation is accelerating."

"I know," I said. "I can feel it."

Damon moved to stand beside me despite his injuries. "What does it feel like?"

I tried to find words. "Like I'm being remade. Like every cell in my body is waking up and remembering something it forgot. Something powerful."

"Is it painful?" he asked.

"No," I admitted. "That's what scares me. It feels good. Like I'm becoming what I was always meant to be."

Lila touched her own arms. "I feel it too. Starting. My body wants to change. Wants to evolve."

"You can fight it," Ryker said. He was desperately searching his tablet for medical solutions. "I can give you suppressants. Slow the genetic rewriting. Buy time to study it."

"Or we let it happen," I said. "Let ourselves become whatever this mutation wants us to be."

"No," Kade said immediately. "You're human, Sera. You stay human."

I turned to look at him. At the man who'd died and come back for me. Who'd learned to love despite being designed not to.

"Am I though?" I asked quietly. "Was I ever fully human after my father engineered my DNA? Or have I always been something in between?"

Kade's jaw tightened. "You're human where it counts. In your heart. Your choices. Your ability to love."

"And if I lose that when I transform?" I asked. "If I become something that can't love anymore? Something that doesn't need you?"

The question hung in the air.

Because that was the real fear. Not dying. Not changing. But losing the connections that made life worth living.

"Then we'll find a way to bring you back," Damon said. "Just like you brought us back. Over and over."

An explosion rocked the building.

Not from inside. From the perimeter. The military forces Mercer had sent were testing the city's defenses.

"They're starting the siege," Nova said. She'd been monitoring communications. "Full lockdown in thirty minutes. After that, no one gets in or out without their permission."

"Can we break through?" I asked.

"Not all of us," Nova replied. "Maybe a small team. But 100,000 civilians? The transformed women who can barely control their new abilities? We'd be slaughtered."

My tablet buzzed. Message from an unknown source.

I opened it.

The transformed woman from earlier appeared on screen. The one who'd thanked me. Her eyes were fully glowing now. Her skin had a faint shimmer.

"Sera Ashford," she said. "My name was Michelle. Before the Genesis Program. Before I became this. Now I'm something new. Something better."

"What do you want?" I asked.

"To show you," Michelle replied. "To show everyone. This transformation isn't a curse. It's evolution. Humanity's next step."

She held up her hand. It glowed brighter. Then she touched a broken piece of metal.

The metal repaired itself. Molecules reorganizing. Becoming whole again.

"We can heal," Michelle said. "Not just ourselves. Everything. The damage from the plague years. The poisoned Deadlands. The dying planet. We can fix it all."

"At what cost?" Ryker demanded. He was watching over my shoulder. "What do you lose when you transform?"

Michelle's expression softened. "Nothing important. Just the limitations. The fear. The weakness that kept us enslaved."

"You lose your humanity," Kade said.

"We gain something better," Michelle corrected. "The ability to choose our own evolution. To become what we want instead of what the Tribunal designed."

The screen showed more transformed women. All of them demonstrating abilities. Healing wounds. Moving objects without touching them. Communicating without speaking.

"Join us, Sera," Michelle said. "Stop fighting what you're becoming. Let the transformation complete. Lead us into what comes next."

"And if I refuse?" I asked.

Michelle's expression turned sad. "Then you die fighting a battle that's already won. Your body is changing whether you accept it or not. You can evolve willingly or let the transformation tear you apart resisting."

The transmission ended.

I looked at my hands. They were starting to shimmer like Michelle's. The transformation was accelerating.

"How long?" I asked Ryker.

He ran scans. "Hours. Maybe less. Your DNA is rewriting faster than Lila's. Faster than any of the others. You're the epicenter. The first. The template everyone else is following."

"Can you stop it?" I asked.

Ryker met my eyes. "Do you want me to?"

Did I?

I thought about my parents. About how they'd engineered this mutation to save humanity. Had they known it would do this? Transform us into something new?

I thought about the Tribunal. About how they'd tried to control evolution through force. Through the Genesis Program. Through fear.

And I thought about freedom. Real freedom. The kind that meant choosing your own path even if that path led somewhere terrifying and unknown.

"No," I said finally. "Don't stop it. Let me transform."

"Sera—" Kade started.

"This is my choice," I interrupted. "Not the Tribunal's. Not Mercer's. Mine. I'm choosing to evolve. To become whatever this mutation wants me to be."

I looked at the three men who'd taught me what love meant.

"But I need you to promise me something," I continued. "If I change too much. If I become something that can't love you anymore. You end it. You stop me before I hurt anyone."

"Absolutely not," all three said simultaneously.

"Then stay with me," I said. "Through the transformation. Whatever I become, help me hold onto who I am. Who I was."

Damon took my hand. "We're not going anywhere."

Ryker prepared medical equipment. "I'll monitor everything. Document the process. Try to help where I can."

Kade just pulled me close. "You better still know who I am when this is over."

"I'll try," I promised.

The transformation hit hard.

One moment I was standing. The next I was on my knees screaming.

Not from pain. From sensation. Every nerve firing at once. Every cell transforming simultaneously.

My skin began to glow. Faint at first. Then brighter.

Through the window I saw the other transformed women responding. Their glow intensifying to match mine. Like we were all connected. All part of something larger.

"Sera!" Kade grabbed my shoulders. "Stay with us. Stay present."

But I was somewhere else now.

Connected to every transformed woman in the city. Feeling what they felt. Knowing what they knew.

We were becoming a network. A collective consciousness. Still individual but also part of something greater.

And I understood.

This wasn't just evolution. This was my father's final gift. A way to rebuild humanity without the Tribunal. Without control. Just connection. Cooperation. Chosen freely.

My eyes opened. The world looked different now. Sharper. More complex. I could see energy flowing through everything. Life force connecting all living things.

"Sera?" Damon asked carefully. "Are you still you?"

I looked at him. At Kade. At Ryker. At Lila standing nearby with her own transformation beginning.

"I'm still me," I said. My voice sounded different. Layered. Like multiple people speaking at once. "But I'm also more. We all are."

I stood up. The glow from my skin illuminated the room.

"The transformation is complete," Ryker said. He was scanning me frantically. "Your genetic code has stabilized. You're something new. Something we've never seen before."

"What am I?" I asked.

Before Ryker could answer, alarms blared.

Nova checked her communications. "Mercer's forces are moving in. Not to contain us. To eliminate us. They've classified all transformed individuals as non-human threats. Orders are to kill on sight."

"How many forces?" Kade demanded.

"Ten thousand soldiers," Nova replied. "With orders to purge the city. Kill everyone. Transformed or not. Leave no witnesses."

I moved to the window. Looked at the military forces surrounding us. At the weapons aimed at my city.

At 100,000 people about to be massacred.

"No," I said. My voice echoed with power I didn't understand yet. "This ends now."

I raised my hand toward the military perimeter.

And every weapon they carried turned to dust.

Just dissolved. Metal becoming particles. Technology failing. Machines dying.

The soldiers stood there staring at empty hands. At equipment that no longer existed.

"That's impossible," Ryker whispered. "You can't just unmake matter."

"I didn't unmake it," I replied. "I asked it to return to base elements. Everything is connected. Energy. Matter. Life. I can feel it all now. Influence it."

I looked at the three men I loved. At the fear and awe mixing in their expressions.

"I'm still Sera," I said. "Still the woman who loves you. But I'm also something that can protect everyone in this city. Everyone in the world."

"You're a god," Kade said quietly.

"No," I corrected. "I'm just evolved. And I'm not alone."

I gestured to the window. The hundreds of transformed women outside.

"We're all evolving," I continued. "All becoming what humanity was meant to be before the plague. Before the Tribunal. Before fear made us small."

My tablet buzzed one final time.

Message from Mercer.

"You've made your choice," his message read. "You've chosen to become monsters. So we respond accordingly. In twenty-four hours, we launch a global strike. Every major city. Every settlement. Everyone who carries your mutation dies. And when the dust settles, humanity starts over. Pure. Uncontaminated. The way it should be."

The message included images.

Nuclear weapons being prepared. Biological agents. Chemical attacks.

Mercer wasn't trying to contain the transformation.

He was trying to commit genocide against everyone who'd evolved.

Against me. Against Lila. Against every woman who'd been enslaved by the Genesis Program and finally broken free.

I looked at Kade, Ryker, and Damon.

"Twenty-four hours," I said. "To stop a global purge. To save everyone."

"How?" Ryker asked. "We can't fight the entire world. Not even with your new abilities."

I smiled. It felt strange on my transformed face.

"We don't fight," I said. "We evolve them. All of them. Every human on the planet. Give them the same choice I had. Transform or die. But make it their choice. Not Mercer's. Not the Tribunal's. Theirs."

"That's insane," Kade said.

"That's freedom," I corrected.

I raised my hands to the sky.

And across the entire planet, every human being felt it.

The mutation spreading. The choice beginning.

Evolve or stay the same.

Live or die.

Humanity's future decided in twenty-four hours.

And I was the catalyst.

The woman who'd broken every rule.

The woman who'd chosen love over control.

The woman who was about to change the world forever.

Whether the world was ready or not.
