Chapter 531: The Blackwater Heir

The river swallowed the sound of the gunfire behind them.

Dante kept the boat moving, one hand gripping the wheel while the other held his weapon. Isabella sat beside Elena, watching the bridge disappear into the darkness.

“Are they following us?” she asked.

Dante glanced in the mirror.

“Not yet.”

Elena pressed a hand against her side. Her face had gone pale again.

Isabella noticed.

“You’re bleeding.”

“I know.”

“You need a hospital.”

“No hospitals.”

“Mom—”

“Blackwater owns too many of them.”

Dante looked at Elena.

“She’s right. We need somewhere secure.”

Elena nodded.

“There’s an old warehouse near the southern docks.”

“Whose?”

“Mine.”

Dante frowned.

“You still have property?”

“I still have more secrets than you know.”

Isabella looked at her mother.

“I’m starting to hate that sentence.”

Elena almost smiled.

The boat turned beneath another bridge.

Dante slowed as they approached the dock.

“No lights,” he said.

“That’s intentional,” Elena replied.

They climbed out.

Dante checked the street before helping Isabella ashore.

She looked at him.

“You heard him.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“You believe that was really him?”

Dante hesitated.

“I want it to be.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked toward the dark warehouse.

“But I heard his voice.”

Isabella stepped closer.

“Whatever happens, you’re not doing this alone.”

Dante touched her cheek.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you keep trying to carry everything yourself.”

His expression softened.

“I don’t know how to do this any other way.”

“Learn.”

For a moment, they stood beneath the rain.

Then Elena cleared her throat.

“If you’re finished staring at each other, we should move.”

Isabella smiled faintly.

Dante shook his head.

“My mother would have liked you.”

Isabella looked at him.

“Would have?”

“She died years ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

They entered the warehouse.

Inside was an old office, several empty crates, and a steel cabinet.

Elena walked straight toward it.

Dante followed.

“What’s inside?”

“Everything Antonio wanted destroyed.”

She opened it.

Folders filled the shelves.

Isabella stared.

“How much evidence is there?”

“Enough to bring down half the city.”

Dante removed a folder.

The name on it made him stop.

MORETTI, ANTONIO.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs of Antonio, his father, Salvatore, and several men Isabella had never seen.

One photograph showed them entering a private club.

Another showed Antonio shaking hands with a judge.

Another showed Dante’s father carrying a briefcase.

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“My father was involved.”

“Yes,” Elena said.

“Deeply.”

“Then why did he leave?”

“Because he discovered who was really paying them.”

Dante looked up.

“Who?”

Elena pointed to a photograph.

A man stood beside Antonio.

His face was partially hidden.

But on his hand was a distinctive silver ring.

Isabella recognized it.

“I’ve seen that ring.”

“Where?”

“In Luca’s photograph.”

Dante stiffened.

“Luca?”

Elena nodded.

“Luca knows more than he admitted.”

Isabella remembered the warehouse, Luca’s warning, and the way he had spoken about Elena.

“He said he wanted to save me.”

“He does.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“Then why work with Salvatore?”

“Because Luca believes he can control him.”

“And can he?”

Elena looked away.

“No.”

A phone rang.

All three froze.

The sound came from the steel cabinet.

Dante pulled his weapon.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Isabella reached for it.

“Don’t answer.”

“I need to know who it is.”

“Isabella.”

She answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then the same voice.

“Isabella.”

Her heart stopped.

“Dad?”

Dante moved beside her.

Antonio’s voice sounded older, rougher, but unmistakable.

“Listen carefully.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Are you alive?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

A sob escaped her.

“Why did you leave us?”

There was a long silence.

“Because staying would have gotten you killed.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let Mom suffer.”

“I know.”

“Then why should I forgive you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Isabella opened her eyes.

“What?”

“Don’t forgive me until you know the truth.”

Dante leaned toward the phone.

“Antonio.”

The voice changed.

“Dante.”

“You’re my father.”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Far away.”

“Who are you hiding from?”

“Everyone.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“Salvatore?”

“No.”

“Blackwater?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Antonio whispered,

“The people who created it.”

The call crackled.

Dante grabbed the phone.

“Tell me who they are.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because one of them is standing closer to you than you realize.”

The call ended.

Dante stared at the phone.

Isabella looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Elena suddenly looked frightened.

“You do.”

Dante turned.

“What?”

“You know exactly what he meant.”

Elena walked to the desk and opened another drawer.

Inside was a list.

Names covered the page.

At the bottom was one name circled in red.

VOSS.

Dante stared.

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“Voss wasn’t just your father’s adviser.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“What was he?”

“The architect.”

Silence filled the warehouse.

Isabella remembered Voss standing over the maps, guiding them toward the hidden estate, always knowing where to go.

Dante shook his head.

“He saved us.”

“He needed you alive.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the last Moretti with a legitimate claim to Blackwater.”

Isabella looked at Dante.

“And me?”

Elena’s eyes met hers.

“You are the heir Antonio chose.”

Dante stepped back.

“Voss brought us to the estate.”

“To find the folder.”

“He knew we would find it.”

“Yes.”

“And Salvatore knew we would be there.”

“Yes.”

Dante’s voice dropped.

“They were working together.”

Elena shook her head.

“Not together.”

“Then what?”

“Against each other.”

Dante looked at Isabella.

“The war isn’t between families.”

“No,” Elena said.

“It is between factions.”

A noise came from outside.

Tires screeched.

Dante immediately moved toward the window.

Three black SUVs stopped outside.

Men poured out.

He turned.

“We have company.”

Isabella grabbed her weapon.

“How many?”

“Too many.”

Elena opened a hidden panel beneath the desk.

A staircase appeared.

“There’s another exit.”

Dante looked at her.

“You knew this was coming.”

“I suspected.”

“You should have told me.”

“I wanted you to hear your father first.”

Dante stared at her.

Outside, the warehouse doors began shaking.

Isabella stepped beside him.

“What’s the plan?”

Dante checked his magazine.

“We get out.”

“And then?”

He looked at the folder containing Voss’s name.

“Then we find Voss.”

Elena shook her head.

“If you confront him, he will run.”

Dante smiled coldly.

“Then we make sure he has nowhere to run.”

The warehouse doors burst open.

Gunmen flooded inside.

Dante grabbed Isabella’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“Always.”

They disappeared down the hidden staircase as bullets tore through the office.

Above them, the warehouse became a battlefield.

But beneath the chaos, Dante understood one thing.

His father was alive.

His mother knew the truth.

Voss had betrayed him.

And somewhere in Chicago, the people who created Blackwater were watching.

Dante looked at Isabella.

“This ends with us.”

She nodded.

“No.”

Her eyes hardened.

“It begins with us.”

Neither of them knew which betrayal would come first, but both understood the same thing: love had made them stronger, and that made them dangerous to every enemy they faced tonight.

Behind them, Elena closed the secret door.

And for the first time in twenty years, the Moretti war had a new alliance.
