Chapter 518: City Life

Dante stared at Isabella.

The warehouse seemed to disappear around them. The gunfire, the ocean beyond the walls, the distant footsteps of Adrian’s men—all of it faded beneath the weight of Adrian’s final words.

She was part of it before she ever met you.

Dante lowered his weapon slightly.

“Isabella?”

Her face had gone completely pale.

“I can explain.”

Those four words hurt more than Adrian’s accusation.

Dante stepped toward her.

“Then explain.”

Clara moved between them.

“Dante, listen to me.”

“No.”

His eyes remained fixed on Isabella.

“I've spent my entire life being lied to. My father lied. My mother lied. Marco lied. Clara disappeared and lied about being alive.”

His voice cracked.

“I don't want another lie.”

Isabella swallowed.

“I never lied about loving you.”

“That wasn't my question.”

“I know.”

She slowly lowered her weapon and placed it on the floor.

Dante watched her carefully.

“My father was connected to Adrian,” she said.

Clara closed her eyes.

Dante's expression hardened.

“Your father?”

“My father worked for him.”

Silence.

“How?”

“He handled money.”

Dante stared.

“Money laundering?”

“Yes.”

“Drugs?”

“Sometimes.”

“Weapons?”

“Yes.”

Dante stepped back.

“And you knew?”

“I found out when I was seventeen.”

“Before you met me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know who I could trust.”

Dante laughed bitterly.

“You could have trusted me.”

“I wanted to.”

“You should have.”

“I was afraid.”

The admission softened his anger for half a second.

Then he remembered Adrian’s words.

“What does your father have to do with me?”

Isabella looked toward Clara.

Clara finally spoke.

“Everything.”

Dante turned.

“Start talking.”

Clara took a breath.

“Your father discovered Adrian's financial network because Isabella's father was one of the men moving money through it.”

Dante looked at Isabella.

“Your father knew mine?”

“They worked together.”

“For Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my father trust you?”

“Because my father eventually turned against Adrian.”

Dante frowned.

“What changed?”

Isabella looked down.

“My mother.”

Dante waited.

“Adrian ordered her death when she tried to leave.”

Isabella's voice trembled.

“My father wanted revenge. He began secretly giving information to your father.”

Dante understood.

“That made your father a target.”

“Yes.”

“And my father helped him.”

“Yes.”

Clara nodded.

“Your father protected Isabella's family for years.”

Dante looked at Isabella.

“You knew this?”

“I knew pieces.”

“Not everything?”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“Dante, I never came into your life because of Adrian.”

“Then why?”

“Because of you.”

Her voice broke.

“I met you before I knew who you were.”

Dante remembered.

The first time they had met.

The rain.

The coffee shop.

The way she had laughed when he accidentally knocked over her drink.

At the time, neither of them had known what was waiting behind that ordinary moment.

“I didn't know you were a Moretti,” Isabella continued.

“And when you found out?”

“I wanted to leave.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I loved you.”

Dante looked away.

He wanted to believe her.

God, he wanted to.

But trust had become something dangerous.

Clara stepped forward.

“Adrian is using this to divide you.”

Dante looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because it's exactly what he did to your parents.”

Marco approached from the entrance.

“He's right.”

Everyone turned.

Marco was bleeding badly now.

Dante rushed toward him.

“You're hurt.”

“I've been worse.”

“You always say that.”

Marco gave him a tired smile.

“Your father used to say the same thing.”

Dante helped him sit against a crate.

“Adrian said Isabella was part of this war.”

Marco looked at Isabella.

“She is.”

Dante's stomach tightened.

“But not the way Adrian wants you to believe.”

Isabella stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Marco reached inside his coat and removed a folded document.

“Your father signed this twenty years ago.”

Isabella took it.

Her hands shook as she read.

“What is it?”

“A protection agreement.”

Dante frowned.

“Between who?”

“Your father and Isabella's father.”

Isabella looked up.

“They promised to protect each other's children.”

Dante stared at her.

“Me and you?”

Marco nodded.

“Your fathers knew Adrian would eventually come after both families.”

Clara added, “They created a plan.”

“What plan?”

“If one family fell, the other would protect the surviving children.”

Dante looked at Isabella.

“That means our families knew about each other before we met.”

“Yes.”

“Did they know we'd meet?”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Dante exhaled.

“So none of this was planned.”

“No,” Isabella whispered.

“Then Adrian is lying.”

“He's manipulating the truth,” Clara said.

A sudden explosion rocked the warehouse.

Everyone ducked.

Glass shattered overhead.

“Move!” Marco shouted.

Men stormed through the side entrance.

Dante grabbed Isabella's hand.

“Stay with me.”

They ran between the crates as bullets tore through the wood.

Clara disappeared toward the rear exit.

Marco fired repeatedly, covering them.

Dante pulled Isabella behind a steel column.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“I am now.”

Another bullet struck the column.

Dante returned fire.

A man dropped.

He looked at Isabella.

“Can you shoot?”

She nodded.

“Then shoot.”

She stepped from cover and fired twice.

Another attacker fell.

Dante stared at her.

She looked back.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You're surprised.”

“A little.”

“My father taught me.”

“Of course he did.”

They moved together through the warehouse.

For the first time, Dante noticed how naturally they fought beside each other.

She didn't hesitate.

She didn't panic.

She trusted him to cover her.

He trusted her to cover him.

Maybe that was what Adrian couldn't understand.

Trust wasn't something their families could arrange.

It was something Dante and Isabella had built themselves.

They reached the rear door.

Clara was waiting.

“Come on!”

They escaped into the alley.

Marco followed, limping.

Dante looked back.

Adrian was nowhere to be seen.

“He wanted us to leave,” Clara said.

Dante frowned.

“Why?”

“Because this was never about killing us.”

“Then what?”

Clara looked at Isabella.

“He wanted you to doubt her.”

Dante's expression darkened.

“Why?”

“Because he knows the only thing he can't control is the two of you together.”

Isabella reached for Dante's hand.

He hesitated.

Then he took it.

Clara watched them.

“Your father made one promise before he died.”

Dante looked at her.

“What promise?”

“That Adrian would never own his family.”

Dante squeezed Isabella's hand.

“Then he failed.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Isabella.

“He kept it.”

Dante understood.

His father hadn't protected him by keeping him away from the truth.

He had protected him by making sure that someday, when the truth finally arrived, Dante wouldn't face it alone.

Isabella leaned against him.

Dante wrapped an arm around her.

He didn't know what tomorrow would bring.

He didn't know whether Clara could survive.

He didn't know how many men Adrian had waiting.

But he knew one thing.

He wasn't going to let Adrian turn love into another weapon.

Dante looked toward the dark waterfront.

“Where is Adrian going?”

Clara's expression changed.

“To your family's old headquarters.”

Dante froze.

“The Moretti estate?”

“No.”

Clara shook her head.

“The place your father hid his most dangerous secret.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

“What secret?”

Clara looked toward the city.

“The one thing Adrian has been searching for for twenty years.”

Dante's eyes narrowed.

“And what is it?”

Clara whispered the answer.

“The original ledger.”

The final piece of evidence.

The one thing that could destroy Adrian Vale.

Dante looked at Isabella.

Then at Marco.

“Then we get there first.”

Isabella nodded.

“Together.”

Dante tightened his grip around her hand.

“Together.”

And somewhere across Chicago, Adrian Vale opened an old door beneath the Moretti estate.

He smiled.

Because for the first time in twenty years, he knew exactly where Dante was going.

And he was waiting.
