Chapter 75 He's My Man!
After breakfast, Emma sat in the sunroom beside the backyard garden.
She opened her phone and found a document sent by Professor Grayson.
It contained information about Eleanor, Steven, and Lily’s mother from years ago.
Professor Grayson: [Let me know if you need any help.]
Emma: [Thank you, Professor Grayson.]
There was also an unread message from Dawn.
Dawn: [Do you have Charles’s contact information?]
Emma quickly sent the information over.
Emma: [You and him…]
Dawn replied swiftly: [He left his tie at my place that day.]
Emma: [Oh…]
Dawn: [It’s not as you think.]
After ending the conversation with Dawn, Emma saw a text from an unknown number.
Unknown: [Emma, please let Liam see Lily. She can’t just die like this. I beg you…]
Attached were several photos of Lily after her suicide attempt.
The images were bloody and unsettling.
Lily lay pale on the ward bed, her eyes wide and staring at the ceiling.
Emma’s hand shook violently as she dropped the phone onto the counter.
Liam and Virgil, who had been talking nearby, both fell silent.
Liam ran over and picked up the phone.
Virgil leaned in to take a look, and both men frowned.
“I’ll handle this,” Liam said softly, wrapping an arm around Emma’s shoulder.
“Steven wouldn’t be thinking of asking Emma to give up her husband for Lily, would he?” Virgil scoffed.
Emma regained her composure and said, “This started because of me. Let me handle it.”
“You really don’t have to get involved,” Liam said, his eyes darkening.
Emma glanced at Virgil, hesitated, then turned to Liam. “Come with me to the hospital.”
“Alright.” Liam agreed.
After they left, Virgil made a call and relayed the hospital and room details he’d just noted.
——
Liam drove while Emma sat in the passenger seat.
“Emma, we really don’t have to get involved,” Liam reminded her.
She fell silent for a moment before finally speaking. “Steven is my father.”
Liam nearly lost his grip on the steering wheel.
He pulled the car slowly to the curb and turned to face her.
“Steven is my father,” Emma swallowed hard and added. “Lily is my half-sister.”
Liam finally realized why she’d cried so bitterly last night.
He gently stroked her head.
“Last night, Steven came to see me, and Lily overheard. There are things I need to clarify with her face-to-face,” she said softly, lowering her head.
Liam unbuckled his seatbelt and pulled her into his arms.
“This isn’t your fault…”
——
About half an hour later——
The moment Emma stepped into the hospital, she felt eyes fixed on her.
Uneasy, she glanced around, but she didn’t see anything unusual.
Outside the ward——
“Emma, Liam, you’re here!” Steven nearly choked up as he reached out to grab their hands.
Liam took a step back, his arm tightening protectively around Emma’s shoulder.
Noticing the two bodyguards beside them, Steven hesitated to approach further.
“Speak. What do you want?” Liam asked coldly.
Steven’s expression shifted.
“Lily tried to kill herself. I truly don’t know what to do. She kept calling your name. I just couldn’t…” he said.
“What happened between Lily and Liam ended a long time ago. If she can’t let go of the past, that’s her problem. I can’t give him up. He’s my man!” Emma said flatly.
Liam’s lips twitched slightly.
His hand slid down from her shoulder and interlocked with hers.
“If Liam helps you today, will you use this method to force him to stay by her side next time?” Emma continued.
Steven froze.
“Emma, it’s not like that! If you can just help her get through this crisis, she’ll never bother the two of you again. After all, she is your sister!” he shouted.
“She’ll never be my sister! And you’ll never be my father,” Emma snorted.
She opened her phone and tapped on a document—the detailed accounts of an oil company.
Steven’s oil firm had been teetering on the brink of bankruptcy for years.
That month, he’d been fleeing creditors.
And Lily was sent abroad to hide.
Unable to bear the relentless harassment from debt collectors, her mother had jumped to her death.
“You! Where did you find this out?” Steven took two steps back.
He’d spent ages covering it up.
How did Emma know?
Was the Hayes family helping her behind the scenes?
“How I found out isn’t your concern. Now, listen carefully. The matter between you and my mother is over.”
“If Lily kills herself over this, it’s entirely your fault, Steven! That’s the consequence you deserve!” she shouted.
“Then why are you here today?” Steven asked, stumbling back two steps.
“To make her give up completely,” Liam said coldly.
“No!” Steven shouted. “You can’t push her any further!”
He blocked their path.
Lily is my last hope.
If she really dies, what should I do?
“Steven.” A deep, resonant voice sounded nearby.
An elderly man approached.
His gaze swept past Liam and settled on Emma.
He then raised his finger slightly.
Several bodyguards behind him immediately moved toward Steven.
“Who are you? What do you want?” Steven struggled violently.
The bodyguards beside Liam shielded him and Emma, pulling them aside.
“Too noisy,” the old man said, frowning.
The bodyguards covered Steven’s mouth and dragged him toward the end of the corridor.
Steven fought desperately, but he was no match for the trained bodyguards.
Liam turned sideways, blocking Emma’s view.
Steven was taken away, and the hospital corridor fell silent.
Leaning on his cane, the older man gazed in Emma’s direction.
He nodded toward Liam.
Eugene Carter?
What is he doing here?
Liam’s eyes flickered.
“What’s wrong?” Emma asked.
Liam snapped back to reality.
“Nothing,” he murmured.
“Let’s go in and see her.”
“Okay.” He nodded.
The two entered the ward.
