Chapter 63 Mr. Hayes Is A Good Man
“But I don’t want to give up,” Lily said.
“Have you considered that he might have moved on or found someone else?” Emma asked.
Lily took a sip of her drink and gazed at Liam in the distance.
“He may have moved on. But I don’t believe that he’s found someone else,” she stated.
Emma desperately wanted to tell her the truth, but she held back.
Just then, Claire emerged from the crowd and sat down on their secluded sofa.
“What’s there to believe or not? The harder you try to pursue him, the more he resents you.”
Lily hadn’t expected Claire to discuss her personal affairs.
“Honestly, with your looks, you should be checking out other guys. Why fixate on him? His heart isn’t with you,” Claire continued.
“I don’t want to regret this,” Lily smiled.
Emma and Claire exchanged a glance, saying nothing.
“I saw Muse on the government’s list of selected designers. Could you introduce me to them sometime, Claire?” Lily changed the subject.
Claire glanced at Emma.
“No need to force it,” Lily added. “Maybe in the future…”
“Muse doesn’t want to be disturbed. We can chat when the time is right,” Claire smiled.
Still, at Lily’s invitation, the two exchanged contact information.
After chatting for a while, Lily left.
“She’s pretty persistent,” Claire remarked.
Emma smiled.
“Buzz…”
An unknown number appeared on her phone.
“Who was that?” Claire asked.
“No idea.”
“Hold on, I’ll be right back. I need to use the restroom,” Claire said.
“Alright.”
The moment Claire left, Emma’s phone started vibrating again.
She had no choice but to pick it up.
“Hello?”
“Did you make Liam do that, Emma?” Chloe’s voice came through.
“What is it?” Emma asked, her brows knitting together.
“It’s you! Ben loved you so much, and you could do something this cruel!”
“Who is Ben? Huh?” She smirked.
“If Ben never wakes up, I’ll make you pay with your life! You’d better pray that Liam protects you forever—or you’ll be the next one in the ward!” Chloe shouted, furious.
“Emma… Emma…” Ben’s voice came from the other line.
“Scoundrel! Dying and still thinking about that bitch!” Chloe cursed.
“Why not use that time to rein in your husband? Stop him from stirring up trouble,” Emma said indifferently.
“He loved you for so many years. Is this how you treat him? Must you finish him off?”
“Feel affection for a cheating man? I’m not a fool,” Emma sneered.
“If you knew Ben married me for your sake, would you still say these things?”
Emma paused, her lashes fluttering.
For my sake?
He cheated, married her, and claims it was for me?
How ridiculous!
“If he knew the child in your womb wasn’t his, do you think he’d let you off?” she asked.
Silence fell on the other line.
“Beep…”
Chloe’s sudden hang-up made Emma’s heart sink.
It confirmed that the child in Chloe’s womb wasn’t Ben’s.
She lifted her glass and took the last sip of red wine.
Could Liam protect me forever?
If Liam had killed Ben, wouldn’t he have to go to prison?
Will I be a widow?
Liam sat down beside her.
Emma lifted her skirt hem and shifted slightly to the side.
The sheer fabric brushed against his pants.
His trousers grew tight as desire flared inside him.
“What’s up? Drunk again?” he asked.
She smiled faintly and shook her head.
“Liam.”
“Hmm?”
He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer.
A wave of scorching heat washed over him as she slid nearer.
His large hand caressed her waist, his fingertips tracing the curve of her side.
“You—”
“What’s so hard to say? Have you been hooking up with other men secretly?” As soon as the words left his mouth, his arm tightened around her waist.
“No!” She shook her head.
“I hope not.”
…
It was the first light snowfall of the season, just before Thanksgiving.
Arthur parked the car not far from the dessert shop.
“Wait for me in the car.” Liam slipped on his coat and pulled the collar up.
“Okay.” Emma smiled.
He pinched her cheek before getting off.
Through the lightly fogged window, she watched him stride steadily toward the dessert shop.
“What was Liam like before? Arthur?” she asked.
“Mr. Hayes barely spoke before you came,” Arthur said, glancing at her through the rearview mirror, catching the faint smile playing at her lips.
“Mr. Hayes is a good man,” he added.
Emma watched the receding figure and nodded in agreement.
Ten minutes later, Liam got back in, carrying three desserts.
Back at the villa, he handed one to Arthur and gave him the day off.
The villa’s security guards and maids were also given the day off.
…
After showering, the two enjoyed dessert in the study.
Emma took a satisfied sip and smiled.
Liam’s lips curved upward as he took a tissue to wipe the cream from the corner of her mouth.
“Would you like to come to the office with me tomorrow?” he asked.
“No, I want to sleep in. I’ll bring you lunch,” she said.
“Alright.”
“Will Ryan be there?” she asked.
“He doesn’t have to be.” His eyes twinkled with amusement.
“…”
Recalling what had happened on the sofa in the CEO’s office, she blushed.
She scooped a large spoonful of dessert into her mouth, forcing herself to stop the wild thoughts.
After finishing the dessert, she read on the sofa.
He was reviewing documents at his computer, occasionally taking calls.
“I’ve reviewed the proposal. It’s fine… Pick a date… Let’s wrap things up before the holiday.”
Hanging up, he turned his gaze to her.
…
Liam lay back on the bed, a sheen of sweat glistening on his forehead.
He watched Emma kneeling beside him, a hint of mischief playing at the corners of his mouth.
He reached out to hook the handle of the bedside drawer.
With a gentle tug, he opened it.
Inside lay several small boxes, neatly arranged. He casually plucked one and offered it to her.
His gaze fixed on her face, the implication unmistakable.
