Laughter and Victory - Elara
Laughter and Victory - Elara
My giggles echoed off the marble shower walls as I sprinted out of the bathroom, slipping a little on the tile. Behind me I heard a deep, guttural growl—Austin’s wolf surfacing with full intent.
“Oh no you don’t!” I squeaked, bolting toward the balcony doors.
A loud thud followed by a muttered, “Damn floor,” told me he had actually slipped trying to catch me, which only made me laugh harder.
That laugh was cut short when an arm wrapped around my waist and I was snatched clean off the ground. “Got you,” Austin rumbled in my ear before I had time to react. A second later he tossed me gently—yet decisively—onto the bed.
“Austin!” I gasped through breathless laughter.
He prowled over me, water still dripping from his hair, each droplet hitting my face like tiny cold kisses. His eyes were blazing with heat… but something else rested beneath it. Something I couldn’t name.
“Austin…” I whispered, reaching up to brush a wet curl from his forehead.
His voice came out low, nearly gravel. “You drive me insane, Elara.”
Before I could answer, he flipped me smoothly onto my stomach and settled behind me, his body crowding me with a primal urgency that made my breath stall. I felt every shudder of emotion rolling off him through the bond—desire, relief, pride, and that strange flicker of… worry? Fear? No. Something deeper.
I tried to twist around to look at him, but he pressed a warm hand to the small of my back. “Not yet,” he murmured, voice thick.
He lifted my hips and savagely ripped my panties right off my body, suprising me, and yet increasing my need.
Positioning himself he shoved into me savagely with large slaps echoing in the room due to his wet body. His breathing was heavy and staggered, and the fierceness was causing my mind to feel like something was off.
“You okay?” I asked quietly.
His hands tightened around my hips causing the feeling of pain to spread from his finger prints. Something was wrong, and I didn't know how our embrace and joking had changed this to something off and that he was not speaking.
As he finished, he slowly moved me to my back and he lay on the bed next to me.
"Austin, what is going on," I whispered, wanting to find out why everything felt different. I turned to my side to look him in the eyes, but he suddenly pulled away. The bed dipped as he stood, his movements too fast—too sharp—to be casual.
“Hey, where are you going?” I asked, propping myself on my elbows.
He didn’t answer right away. He stared down at the wet imprint his body had left on the blankets, something troubled flickering through his expression. Then he cleared his throat. “Just getting back in the shower. I, uh… didn’t finish.”
The excuse was weak. Even he seemed to realize it.
I watched him retreat into the bathroom, water droplets sliding down his back. “We could just shower together, you know,” I called with a teasing smile, pushing up from the bed.
His silhouette froze for half a second.
I padded into the bathroom after him, and as I stepped into the shower, he stepped right out—so deliberately it made my stomach drop.
I reached for his hand. “Austin… shower with me?”
For a split second, I saw everything. A flash of fear. A wall slamming up. His wolf pacing behind his eyes like it was fighting itself.
“No,” he said too quickly. “I need to check on everyone. Leo, Marcus… the field cleanup. I’ll see you in a bit. I also need some food”
“But—” I started.
He leaned in and kissed my cheek. Not my lips. Not my forehead. My cheek. Casual. String-lights-bright and heartbreak-sharp.
“I’ll see you later, Elara,” he repeated, already turning toward the door.
And before I could find the words forming in my chest, he was gone, the door clicking quietly behind him and leaving me alone in the steam.
Steam still curled around my shoulders as I shut off the shower. The warmth clung to my skin, but a strange chill rippled down my spine—one I couldn’t explain. Maybe it was the abrupt way Austin had pulled away… or maybe it was the look that had flickered across his face, gone before I could understand it.
I dried off and pulled on clean leggings and an oversized sweater, the soft fabric giving me a sense of grounding. Everything had happened so fast today—battle, blood, loss, victory—and the adrenaline was still weaving itself through my veins. Maybe Austin was just processing everything too.
Still… something felt off.
I stepped out of the bedroom and followed the faint hum of voices down the hallway. As I reached the railing that overlooked the dining hall, the low roar of pack chatter hit me—deep laughter, clattering dishes, kids running between tables with their drawn-on cups, the warm buzz of life returning to normal.
My eyes found him instantly.
Austin stood at the center of it all, shoulders relaxed, head thrown back in a full, easy laugh as Marcus mimed getting caught in one of the traps. Leo shoved Marcus and muttered something that made Austin double over, gripping his stomach like he couldn’t breathe. He clapped a warrior on the back, ruffled the hair of a young teen who had clearly brought him food, and moved through the room like nothing in the world weighed on him.
Like nothing had changed.
For a moment, watching him, my chest loosened. This was my mate, my Alpha, the man who had just risked his life without hesitation. The man who had come home.
He looked up—almost like he sensed me—and our eyes locked across the room.
My breath caught.
Just for a fraction of a heartbeat… his eyes weren’t their warm, molten brown.
A thin ring of violet shimmered around the edge of his irises, faint but alive—like a pulse. Like magic. Like something dark brushing against him.
I blinked, leaning forward, but he blinked too—and it was gone. Completely. His eyes were normal, softening the moment he saw me. He gave me that smile, the one that always melted something inside me.
I swallowed hard, stepping back into the shadows of the hall.
Maybe it was the light.
Maybe it was exhaustion.
Maybe…
But the chill that ghosted over my skin said otherwise.
Something was wrong.
And whatever it was—
—it had touched Austin.
