Chapter168

Chapter168
Matt

Matt was lounging in his office with his feet on his desk. It was beautiful Sunday afternoon and their wasn’t much stirring in the weeds. The Pack was quiet, and in many ways it felt a bit like the deep breath before a storm. He wasn’t sure if it was a sixth sense, or just Kami’s paranoia, but he hadn’t been able to completely relax since he had broke up with Christy.

Matt had recently tightened security around the borders and created a new stronger patrol schedule. He had given extra self defense classes to the new human inhabitants and the Omegas that didn’t normally didn’t spend much time training. His warriors were all primed. Between his ideas, the training schedule, and embracing Cole and Kami’s insanity, he was pretty sure that Blackrock could repel anything that was thrown at them. This certainly had allowed him the perfect opportunity to just take a moment for himself.

He wasn’t sure how long he had been mindlessly doom scrolling on his phone before his peace was disturb. He felt the hairs on his arms stand up long before he heard the first of the alarms that were raised by those advanced scouts who were keeping a close eye on the pack borders. Matt was already jumping to his feet when he got the first mind link.

Even though he had prepared for it, Matt didn’t want to believe it. He struggled to accept that he was such a poor judge of character but he had no choice. Christy really had betrayed him, and it was like a knife straight to his gut. He struggled to wrap his brain around the idea that his former girlfriend had been a spy the entire time.

Kami had told Matt that she suspected that Christy, Jenny and Scarface, the rogue, were in league together. When he thought about how foolish and impulsive Christy had been, it hardly seemed possible. But Matt, being ever cautious, prepared for that eventuality just in case. Even after Christy had conned her way back into his office and despite the fact that she had blown him up with a thousand unanswered texts and calls, in his heart, he never really believed it. Not until the enemy began walking right into Kami’s trap.

Matt didn’t really have time to dwell because Blackrock was under attack. He was already receiving reports that enemy wolves were pouring onto the Pack lands through a breech in their borders. The first reports were that it was a larger force than they had anticipated. However, he had already been told that the enemy wolves were running straight into the small canyon that Kami had erased from the map in his office. The invaders were waking into an ambush, just as his team had expected.

Matt burst out of his office and took out his frustration out on the first rogue he ran across. The fight with the small wolf was almost a joke and he was practically seeing red as he took down the next two Silvermoon wolves fairly easily. Matt felt like he was moving from fight to fight as he worked off the worst of his rage.

As he moved closer to the worst of the fighting, he began to receive reports that several of the Silvermoon and rogue wolves either broke through the canyon or entered the reservation by another route. He knew his friends would need back up so he began to strategically work his way towards the heart of the Pack, letting his feelings of anger and betrayal guide him As he encountered each enemy wolf individually, he worked to take it down. At the end of each fight, he was already itching for the next.

He wasn’t surprised when he heard a report that several of the enemy forces had managed to invade the green space in front of the Pack house. He was running to its defense when he was waylaid by the Silvermoon Beta, Zeta and a third warrior. He heckles were raised and his heart sank as he realized that the group was pack hunting. Their unsavory behavior had left a clear path of destruction. Matt could see where they had left several dead or injured Blackrock wolves in their wake.

Wolves that engaged in predator behavior such pack hunting were considered cowardly. Three on one fighting was despicable behavior, far beneath the status of the Silvermoon leadership. Having a Beta and Zeta made their hunting party even more dangerous. It made Matt sick to even think about it. Most honorable wolves chose to engaged in single combat when in battle.

Knowing the odds, Matt quickly turned and barreled into the chest of the closest of the wolves in the trio. He was biting and clawing with an inhuman fury as he knocked the Silvermoon Zeta to the ground. They rolled head over heels together across the already bloodstained grass. While engaging with the medium sized wolf, he also took the opportunity to strike at the Beta or the smaller wolf when they tried to engage him.

Matt had managed to damage the Zeta’s paw and gash open the smallest warriors as he held his own against the three wolves. While he appeared to be winning, he knew in his heart it was just a matter of time, before the odds changed. The warriors were formidable. Either the Beta or Zeta, would have been a hard kill in single combat. As a team, they were almost unstoppable. Especially with the third warrior as a distraction. Despite the odds, he fought with everything within him.

Matt was mid slash when his heart sank. The ground under him was slick and his feet began to slide. He felt himself lose his footing as fell backwards to the ground. The Beta instantly lumbered over him as Matt vainly tried to scratch his face with his front paws. The Beta’s teeth were bared and he knew he was going for Matt’s jugular when he heard a scream that sounded like a cat that was being forcibly baptized.

He watched with an open mouth as Kami randomly dove into the four wolf dog pile like she was jumping into a swimming pool. She was kicking wildly with her silver hair dagger in one hand and a wicked looking Sgian Dubh in the other. She sliced the paw of the Zeta and stabbed the Beta in the eye.

The three wolves quickly turned on her, as she scrambled to her feet, Matt tried to get up to help her, but his entire chest was ripped open and several of his paws were broken. He knew that Kami had literally just saved his life, and he was desperately trying to return the favor. His head began to swim and the last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Cole rolling head over his feet with the Beta.
