28. The New Beginning of End
28. The New Beginning of End
Love doesn’t knock. It slips in unnoticed, until you’re too deep to escape.
GABRIELLA
My alarm buzzed sharply at 6 a.m., dragging me out of sleep with its insistent hum. I blinked my eyes open and stretched, the soft sheets slipping from my skin like a whispered goodbye to sleep. A quick splash of cold water on my face jolted me fully awake. I moved through my morning routine with practiced ease, mind already dancing with anticipation for what lay ahead.
I slipped into a chic white dress, its soft fabric hugging my figure with elegance. To add a playful touch, I paired it with cozy white fur boots that gave me a wintery flair. Just as I was applying a hint of lip gloss, the tube slipped from my fingers and smudged a soft pink stain across my dress. I gasped.
“Seriously? Now?” I muttered, scanning the room in mild panic. No time to change.
Then, inspiration struck like lightning. I grabbed a white-and-blue scarf from my suitcase and draped it over the stain, tying it diagonally across my torso. I secured it with a wide belt at the waist, transforming the mishap into a fashion statement. I smiled at my reflection—problem solved. Crisis averted. Maybe I was a genius.
Downstairs, Alejandro was already waiting on the couch, dressed in sharp casuals, looking devastatingly handsome as usual. His gaze flicked up as I walked in, and something in his eyes softened.
“You look… stunning,” he said, with a small but sincere smile.
A blush bloomed on my cheeks. “Thank you,” I said softly, trying to hide my smile.
We stepped out into the crisp morning air, walking side by side toward the waiting car. The city was just waking up, the sky painted in hues of pale gold and lavender. The drive took about an hour, winding toward a port town nestled at the edge of Rome, where the horizon kissed the sea.
As the scent of salt and ocean spray filled the air, I realized where we were heading. A massive white cruise ship stood docked ahead, the name
Sea Empress scrawled in elegant blue cursive along its hull.
My eyes widened. “Wait... is this…?”
Alejandro simply nodded, a mysterious smirk on his face. “Yes. She's mine.”
The words hung in the air, rich with opulence and effortless power.
We boarded the ship—he climbed first, offering his hand to me like a true gentleman. His touch was warm and firm, and for a moment, the world quieted around us. Once on deck, I looked around and realized something strange.
There were no other guests.
“This whole cruise… it’s just us?” I asked, stunned.
Alejandro gave a slight nod. “Privacy is a luxury. And today, I wanted to share it with you.”
Butterflies erupted in my stomach. Why was he doing this? What was I to him—just a companion, a temporary fixture, or something more?
The engines rumbled to life and the ship slowly pulled away from the dock. I wandered to the edge of the deck, my hands gripping the polished railings as the ocean began to stretch endlessly before us. The sea sparkled like scattered diamonds under the morning sun, and the wind tugged at my hair like a playful spirit.
Alejandro appeared beside me, his presence quiet yet unmistakable. I hadn’t even noticed him walk over. His voice was gentle, almost intimate.
“I didn’t want to interrupt your peace… but I figured breakfast might be a better idea than starvation,” he said with a smile.
I laughed, lighthearted and free. “Food sounds perfect.”
We descended into the ship’s luxurious dining lounge—light pouring through the panoramic windows, casting golden streaks across the room. We ordered crispy bacon sticks, warm chicken sandwiches, and fresh orange juice.
As we ate, I looked at him—really looked. His expression was unreadable, like he was hiding entire stories behind those dark, calculating eyes. Between bites, I asked, “Where exactly are we headed?”
He leaned back, eyes fixed on mine.
“Sardinia,” he said. “I own a private section of the island. It’s… untouched. Quiet. A place where we can disappear from the world for a little while.”
My fork paused midair.
He was taking me to an island?
My heart fluttered, both stunned and suspicious. Each day, he unfolded new layers of himself—mystery after mystery, wrapped in luxury and shadows. I didn’t know what to make of it. Why was he sharing so much of his world with me? Why did he keep trying to impress me?
And the scarier question—why did I care so much?
I looked out the window, where the ocean seemed endless and free. Yet somewhere deep in my chest, I felt shackled—to a man I was supposed to hate, and a truth I wasn’t ready to accept.
We reached the island in just under two hours. The moment we stepped off the cruise, the salty breeze curled around my skin like a soft whisper. Alejandro’s driver was already waiting for us at the dock, standing beside a sleek black SUV. As we drove, the dense green of the island gave way to glimpses of turquoise water, and with every passing second, I felt my excitement build.
Thirty minutes later, we arrived at Alejandro’s private retreat—secluded, quiet, and kissed by sunlight.
The first thing I noticed was the water—crystal clear, the kind of blue that could only be found in untouched corners of the world. My heart leapt.
“I want to swim,” I blurted out, unable to contain my longing.
Alejandro glanced at me, smiling. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
My face fell slightly. “But I don’t have any swimwear… or anything beach-appropriate.”
Without missing a beat, he reached for my hand. “That’s already taken care of. Just head to your room.”
The beach house came into view, and though it shared the minimalistic elegance of our last stay, this one had a different soul. It was humbler—more human.
Two tall palm trees stood at the entrance like silent guardians, and a clean, earthy path led through a small, manicured lawn. There were no extravagant fountains or sculptures—just simplicity. Nature ruled here, not man-made grandeur.
Inside, the house breathed nostalgia. It was a two-storey, four-bedroom cottage with whitewashed walls, polished wooden floors, and windows that framed the ocean like masterpieces. It felt like time slowed here, like the world outside no longer mattered.
It wasn’t devoid of modern touches though—sleek kitchen appliances, hot showers, high-speed internet. It was the perfect balance: modern comfort hidden within rustic charm. The kind of place that didn’t impress with opulence but left a mark with soul.
I found a neatly packed beach outfit waiting for me in the wardrobe. I slipped into a delicate floral-print bikini and tied a sheer white sarong around my waist. My bare feet padded softly across the wooden floors as I made my way out, the sun warming my skin with every step.
I stepped onto the sand, wind in my hair and the sea calling out to me like a long-lost friend.
Alejandro appeared minutes later, shirtless in blue Bermuda shorts. My breath caught for a moment. His physique was toned and effortlessly powerful, sun-kissed and wet with drops from the ocean breeze. He looked like he belonged to the sea.
I didn’t even try to hide my reaction. I let my eyes linger, and for once, didn’t scold my mind for where it went. We had moved beyond pretense now.
I walked into the surf, the waves curling gently around my ankles. The water was warm, alive. I waded deeper, giggling as the waves rocked me playfully. Alejandro followed behind, his pace relaxed at first—until he surged ahead like a merman born of tide and wind.
Water splashed across my face as he swam circles around me, making a show of his prowess. I laughed, half-impressed and half-annoyed by his teasing. He grinned, devilishly proud.
He was so at ease in the water, like it knew him. I did my best to keep up, but I knew I was outmatched. Still, I didn’t care. There was something comforting about his presence, even if I was always a few steps—or strokes—behind.
For nearly two hours, we swam, played, and let the ocean steal time from us. There were moments of splashing war, and others of shared stillness—just floating near each other, watching the sun glimmer over the horizon.
Eventually, our muscles grew heavy with fatigue. We stumbled out of the water, drenched and breathless, like survivors of a beautiful storm.
“I’m going to shower and then laze here with a drink in hand,” Alejandro said, running a hand through his wet hair.
“Sounds like a dream,” I whispered, eyes locked on his retreating figure as he walked back toward the house.
I stood there for a moment, watching the waves kiss the shore, and smiled. This wasn’t just a getaway.
This was the beginning of something dangerously real.
After rinsing away the sea salt in a quick, refreshing shower, we made our way back to the beach, the soft golden sand warm beneath our feet. The sun was still high in the sky, casting a honeyed glow over everything as we sank into the plush lounge chairs facing the rolling waves.
Alejandro reached for the bottle of sunscreen, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “We don’t want you getting burned, do we?” he said playfully, uncapping the lotion with a smooth click.
I smirked, lying back and exposing my shoulders to him. “Be gentle,” I teased, though my heart beat with eager anticipation.
I reclined slowly, my heart already picking up pace as he leaned in and began to smooth the lotion over my skin. His hands were firm yet gentle, starting at my shoulders and gliding down my arms with deliberate slowness. When his fingers traced along the curve of my back, I felt it again—that soft hum beneath my skin, like static electricity, ready to spark. I closed my eyes, not wanting the moment to end.
“Your turn,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
He turned, and I straddled his waist, my legs on either side of him as I reached for the lotion. His hands instinctively found my hips, holding me there, steady and close. As I rubbed the sunscreen over his chest and shoulders, I tried to focus on the task, but every brush of my fingers against his bare skin felt more intimate, more electric.
Our faces were just inches apart now. The air between us was charged. He looked up at me with those deep, unreadable eyes, his lips slightly parted.
“What are we doing?” I whispered, unsure if I meant the question or just wanted to hear his voice again.
He didn’t answer with words. Instead, he closed the distance between us and kissed me.
It started slow—his lips pressing softly against mine, tentative, like he was afraid I might pull away. But I didn’t. I leaned into him, deepening the kiss, my hands sliding up to cup his face as his arms wrapped tightly around my waist. The world disappeared. There was no sea, no sky, no island—only him and me and the pulse of something that felt dangerously close to love.
When we finally pulled apart, breathless and quiet, I rested my forehead against his, both of us smiling for reasons neither of us dared say aloud.
We stayed like that for a while—wrapped in each other, letting the sea breeze cool our flushed skin and the sunlight bathe us in gold.
I don’t know when my eyes closed—only that I fell asleep with my head resting over Alejandro’s heart, lulled by its steady rhythm. His arms were wrapped around me in a protective hold, warm and unyielding. He didn’t speak, didn’t shift—just held me, as if I belonged there.
When I stirred awake, the sky had softened to a pale lavender, hinting that afternoon was drawing near. Blinking against the light, I found Alejandro’s gaze fixed on me.
But this time… it wasn’t the usual unreadable, cold stare of the cartel leader everyone feared. No, there was something different in his expression—something I hadn’t seen before. Admiration. Wonder. Maybe even tenderness. And that terrified me more than any threat ever could.
He shouldn’t be looking at me like that. And I shouldn’t be feeling what I was feeling in return.
Because despite what was happening between us… I was still here on a mission to bring him down. I had made a vow to avenge the destruction he’d caused to my family. Yet here I was—resting in his arms, letting his presence feel like safety.
The guilt gnawed at the edges of my heart.
He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“Hungry?” he asked, his voice soft, with a ghost of a smile.
“Starving,” I replied, laughing lightly, trying to shake the heaviness in my chest.
He helped me to my feet, his hand lingering at the small of my back.
We dined al fresco beneath the shaded veranda, the sea stretching endlessly before us in shimmering hues of blue and silver. The table was set with spicy shrimp, rich chicken casserole, and perfectly seasoned egg-fried rice. Each bite was more flavorful than the last, the kind of meal that made you close your eyes and savor it slowly.
But more than the food, it was his presence—his warmth, his rare smile, the way his fingers brushed mine when we reached for the same napkin—that filled me up.
Between sips of water and stolen glances, I caught myself thinking:
How did we get here? How had something so unexpectedly beautiful, so impossibly complicated, become my reality?
And deeper still, a darker thought whispered
How do I walk away from a man I’m supposed to hate… when I’m already halfway in love with him?
After our hearty lunch, I made my way back to my room. Alejandro had excused himself for some work matters, leaving me alone in the quiet beach house. I welcomed the stillness, curling up with The Alchemist again. The familiar words soothed me, but soon my eyelids grew heavy. Without realizing it, I drifted into a light sleep, the ocean breeze humming through the open windows like a lullaby.
When I woke up, the sun had started its descent—painting the sky in soft strokes of amber and rose. I checked the time. Almost six.
A gentle ache in my stomach reminded me I hadn’t eaten since lunch. I made my way to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of milk, snacking on a packet of cookies I found tucked in one of the cabinets. It was comforting in a childlike way—warm milk, sweet crumbs, and a moment of solitude.
But that peace shattered the moment I stepped back into my room.
There, lying on the bed, was a package wrapped in soft gold paper. A handwritten note rested on top, its elegant script catching the glow of the fading sun:
“Wear this and come to the beach by 7pm.”
My heart skipped.
A thousand questions surged in my mind. My pulse quickened.
Who left this? Alejandro had gone out… or so he said. And apart from the house staff, we were alone here. Was it from him? And if so… why this air of mystery? What is he planning?
I stared at the note, reading it again, then again, as if it would offer more clarity the second or third time around.
But all it did was stir the storm already brewing in my chest.
A part of me was paranoid—wary of how deep I had let myself fall into this web. But a larger, quieter part… was terrified for another reason altogether.
I’ve grown emotionally attached to him. More than I should be. More than I’m allowed to be.
I sat on the edge of the bed, gripping the fabric of the package tightly, trying to steady my breath. My mind tried to reason with my heart.
You’re just not used to male attention. You’ve been on your own for too long. These feelings—they’re just hormones, a passing infatuation...
But even as I said those words to myself, I knew they were a lie.
Because deep down, I wasn’t afraid of Alejandro hurting me.
I was afraid I had already handed him the power to do so.
I took a deep breath and looked toward the clock. 6:15 PM. Time was slipping through my fingers like grains of sand.
And so was my resolve.
