Chapter 99 Echoes Across The Divide

Chapter 99 Echoes Across The Divide
JULIAN

The hotel room felt like it was a sterile cage wrapped in luxury linens and filled with minimalist art.

I had moved out the night before, dragging a single suitcase through the revolving doors like a man walking away from the only home that had ever truly mattered.

Two weeks left on the contract, and I was already unraveling.

The silence in this impersonal suite pressed against my ears. I stood at the window for what felt like hours, staring at the Paris skyline, wondering which lights belonged to the penthouse I no longer had the right to call home.

The temporary separation was supposed to bring clarity. Instead, it had only sharpened the ache.

I missed her fire. Her laugh. The way she challenged me like no one else ever had.

I poured myself a drink and sat on the edge of the bed, the glass cool against my palm. The city moved on without me, seemingly indifferent to the war raging inside of my chest.

I had destroyed more evidence of the documents today, but the final digital copy remained - my last insurance against my father’s wrath.

A safety net I prayed I would never need.

My phone buzzed with a message from Nyra. I opened it with a heavy sigh.

"She’s hurting. You’re hurting. Fix this before it’s too late."

I didn’t reply because what could I say? That I was trying? That I was terrified of losing her completely if I told her the full truth about the signed documents? That every day without her felt like walking through a thick fog with broken glass under my feet?

I closed my eyes and let the exhaustion pull me under, the weight of two weeks left pressing down harder than ever.

ROSEMARY

The gala was supposed to be a celebration of the latest expansion milestone.

Instead, it felt like walking across a sort of battlefield.

I moved through the crowd in a sleek midnight-blue gown, smiling for the cameras, shaking hands with industry titans, all while my heart felt like it was being slowly pulled apart.

Julian was here somewhere. We had both been invited separately, and the organizers had clearly relished the idea of the “power couple” appearing at the same event even as their marriage hung by a thread.

I felt him before I saw him.

Our eyes locked across the grand ballroom. The air between us thickened instantly - heavy with everything unsaid, every almost-touch, every fight that had ended in frustrated longing rather than resolution.

He looked devastating in his tailored black tuxedo, but his eyes carried the same haunted exhaustion I felt in my bones.

Neither of us moved closer. The distance felt deliberate. Sacred, almost. A silent agreement not to make a scene in public.

But the pull was magnetic. Dangerous. I could feel the weight of his gaze on my skin like it was a physical caress. My body suddenly remembered every teasing touch and every time that he had brought me to the edge and left me aching.

He took one step forward. I took one step back.

The dance of avoidance continued across the crowded room, heavy eye contact and unspoken promises hanging between us like it was smoke. There was no touching and no words. Just the crushing awareness that we were both breaking under the same weight.

I slipped away to the terrace for air, the cool night breeze doing little to calm the storm inside me. The city lights sprawled beneath me like a kingdom I was no longer sure I wanted to rule alone.

NYRA

Across the Atlantic, in a sleek Manhattan apartment, the night took on a different kind of intensity.

Justin and I had spent the evening going over old Dale family records, piecing together how deeply Mario manipulated everyone around him, even his own children.

“He keeps everyone dependent,” Justin said quietly, fingers tracing a financial trail on his laptop.

“Julian included. I'm pretty sure that revoking his black card wasn’t just punishment. It was control. Mario doesn’t let go easily.”

I leaned against his shoulder, processing the weight of it.

"Julian is definitely not perfect. But he and Rosemary… they’re good together. They are quite messy, but real. We should help them fight for it and keep it. Even after the contract ends.”

Justin turned to me, his eyes soft in a way I hadn’t seen before.

“And what about us? What do you want with me, Nyra?”

I searched his face for a long moment.

“I don’t know what the future looks like yet. But I know I want you by my side while we figure it out.”

The kiss that followed was different from the frantic, stolen moments we had shared before.

This was deep, unhurried, and full of quiet promise. Clothes fell away slowly and reverently. When he finally laid me down on the bed and settled between my spread legs, I welcomed him with a soft gasp.

He entered me in one smooth, deep thrust - missionary, intimate, his eyes locked on mine as he moved with passionate, measured strokes. His hips rolled deeply, hitting every perfect spot as he whispered my name.

I wrapped my legs around him, my heels digging into his back, pulling him closer, deeper.

We moved together like we had all the time in the world - slow, intense, and breathtaking. When I came, it was with his name on my lips, my body arching beneath him. He followed moments later, burying himself deep as he found his own release.

We stayed like that for a long time afterward, tangled and breathing each other in.

ROSEMARY

I returned to the empty penthouse after the gala, the memory of Julian’s eyes across the room still burning.

The silence was deafening.

I poured myself a glass of wine and stood at the window, staring at the city that had once felt like mine. Now it felt like a witness to our slow implosion.

Two weeks left.

And I was starting to wonder if love was enough to survive the wreckage we had created.

JULIAN

In the hotel room across town, I stared at the same Forbes cover on my laptop screen, a glass of whiskey untouched on the table beside me.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Untouchable.

And I had never felt further from her.

The temporary separation was supposed to give us clarity. Instead, it had only heightened the weight of feelings we already had.

It made me want her more. But it also made me wonder if we were both too broken to ever fit together properly again.

Two weeks left.

And I was starting to fear that the end of the contract might not be the end of us - but the beginning of something even more painful.
