Chapter 637 Untangling the Heart
From the first time we met, when I mistakenly thought he was just an assistant, to when I was rejected by QuantumWorks Group and found myself lost and alone in the woods, if Matthew hadn't shown up just in time, I might have died in that downpour. It was that night in the cabin that made me start to accept him.
After that, it seemed like he always appeared whenever I needed him. When I was almost assaulted by a thug and James was trying to take pictures, it was Matthew who arrived just in time to save me. When I was kidnapped, Matthew showed up even faster than the police. The last time I came to Everglade City and was blocked by Trent, if it weren't for Matthew, I might not be alive today.
So much had happened between us, and it always seemed like he was the one making sacrifices for me. I started to ask myself, why would someone as high and mighty as Matthew do so much for someone as ordinary as me?
Then I asked myself a question on Matthew's behalf: 'Doesn't someone who sacrifices so much for you deserve your unconditional trust at least once?'
The answer was, of course, yes. Matthew deserved my trust. I had just gotten so used to his kindness that I took it for granted.
After this reflection, I felt a sudden clarity. I began to understand why Matthew did what he did.
If I assumed Matthew hadn't betrayed me, then his only reason for getting close to Victoria was Starlight Productions Group!
I had investigated Victoria before. She was a dazzling star, but her background was equally important. Victoria was the sole heir to Starlight Productions Group.
"You're trying to win over Starlight Productions Group?"
Everything clicked into place. Since I believed Matthew wouldn't betray me, I could guess his intentions.
"Smart, but not smart enough."
Matthew said, tapping my forehead. He had done this so many times that I was used to it, so I dodged and bit his hand instead.
"What are you, part dog?"
Matthew said this, but he didn't pull his hand away. Instead, he gently patted my head with his other hand and continued, "I'm looking to diversify my portfolio. The entertainment industry is a gold mine right now, and Victoria practically guarantees box office success. With Starlight Productions backing me, it's basically printing money."
"But is it right to deceive Victoria's feelings like this?"
I said, a bit worried. I wasn't afraid of Victoria, but I was concerned that her father might use Starlight Productions Group's influence to retaliate against Matthew, which would be troublesome.
Matthew shook his head and said, "I didn't deceive her feelings. From day one, I told her it was a business relationship, and I made it clear that my girlfriend's name is Emily, and my future wife will only be Emily."
Matthew's sudden declaration made me blush. I glared at him, but he pointed to his cheek as if asking for a reward. Although I didn't want to, I decided to indulge him this once since he acknowledged me as his future wife. So, I leaned in and kissed his cheek.
Matthew took the opportunity to hug me. He whispered in my ear, "Stop overthinking. I'm absolutely loyal to you. But I might do some things soon that could make you misunderstand. Don't ask why for now. I'll tell you everything when the time is right."
"Did you..."
I wanted to ask if Matthew was targeting Carol, but from the way he referred to her, I knew that no matter what Carol had done to him, he still recognized her as his mother deep down. If it wasn't Carol, then who could it be? I couldn't figure it out.
With my doubts cleared, my affection for Matthew took over again. Before we knew it, we ended up in bed, and what was meant to happen, happened.
