Chapter 221 A Happy home

Chapter 221 A Happy home
Down in the massive underground security bunker beneath the Lockhart estate, the glow of a dozen monitors cast a cold, electric blue light across the control room.

Arthur sat spinning a heavy gold signet ring between his weathered fingers, his eyes locked onto Camera Feed 04, which displayed the quiet hallway outside the master suite upstairs. The old man let out a low, gravelly chuckle, shaking his head.

"The boy actually tried to cook," Arthur muttered to himself, leaning back into his leather chair. "Seventy years of Lockhart bloodline survival, and we almost got taken down by a box of pancake mix."

"Shall I have the security team sweep the kitchen for any remaining incendiary devices, sir?" asked a sharp-eyed tech specialist seated a few feet away, his fingers flying across a multi-monitor setup.

"Leave it," Arthur waved a hand dismissively, a knowing grin spreading across his face. "Let him suffer a bit. Marriage is the ultimate battlefield, and the boy needs to learn that a bouquet of roses doesn't automatically erase a secret DNA lab report."

The tech specialist hesitated, tapping a key on his console. "Speaking of external threats, sir—we just intercepted a silent ping on the perimeter routers. It originated from an encrypted relay station downtown. A secondary IP address associated with Vicenzo’s syndicate network."

Arthur’s relaxed posture vanished instantly. The amusement in his eyes evaporated, replaced by the cold, razor-sharp focus of an old enforcer who had survived decades of turf wars. He leaned forward, placing both hands on the metal console.

"Trace it," Arthur commanded, his voice dropping into a steely register. "Find out if they’re just probing our firewalls or if they’ve managed to catch wind of the hospital report."

"Working on it now," the tech replied, codes cascading down the monitor in a blur of green text. "They're masking the signature behind a civilian proxy server... wait. It's not a data probe, sir. It's a localized transmission. Someone inside the city limits just uploaded a encrypted media file to a dark-web public forum."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "What kind of file?"

"A audio log," the specialist murmured, clicking a few keys to route the decrypted wave file through the room's master speakers. "And based on the voice signature... it’s not one of ours."

A heavy, static-laced hiss filled the underground bunker, followed by the sound of muffled footsteps and a cold, raspy voice speaking with deliberate slowness.

“Tell Mr. Lockhart that a signature on a marriage certificate doesn't make him bulletproof,” the voice echoed from the speakers, dripping with malicious intent. “If he thinks he can lock his little queen away in that glass tower and keep her safe from what’s coming... let’s see how long his fortress stands when the foundation starts to crack.”

A sharp, jagged line of static cut the transmission dead.

In the silent bunker, the air turned ten degrees colder. Arthur stared at the dark monitor, his fingers curling tightly into a fist against the metal console. Vicenzo wasn't backing down. He was circling the estate like a wolf waiting for a slip-up, and he clearly knew about the domestic friction shaking the Lockhart household from within.

"Double the perimeter patrols," Arthur ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "And lock down the internal comms. If a single word of this reaches Elisa while she’s still dealing with Ridge, I'll have every man on this shift scrubbing the garage floors with a toothbrush. Am I understood?"

"Crystal clear, sir," the tech nodded, instantly dispatching encrypted red-alert codes to the guard posts.

The security doors of the underground bunker hissed open, breaking the tense silence of the control room.

Arthur didn't even need to turn around to know who had just stepped out of the private elevator. The sheer drop in atmospheric pressure, the subtle shift in the air, and the quiet, heavy tread of leather shoes were signature traits of the man who ran the Lockhart empire with an iron fist.

Ridge walked down the metal-grate steps, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line, his dark eyes locked onto the master console where the intercepted syndicate transmission was still blinking on the main monitor. He had not come down here by coincidence. Even upstairs in the master suite, while making peace with Elisa, his instincts had been screaming. The estate’s internal sensor grid had routed a low-priority alert straight to his personal phone,an alert he had intercepted before Miller could flag it.

He had listened to every single word of Vicenzo’s encrypted audio log.

"You're tracking shadows again, Arthur," Ridge said, his deep voice carrying a dangerous, low rumble that echoed off the cold concrete walls.

Arthur slowly turned his leather chair around, taking in the sight of the younger man. For a second, a flicker of genuine concern crossed the old enforcer's weathered features, though he quickly masked it behind his usual stoic armor.

"I'm not tracking shadows, Ridge," Arthur replied evenly, gesturing to the silent audio waveform on the screen. "Vicenzo is actively circling the estate. He knows about the friction upstairs. He knows about the security blind spots. And more importantly, he’s waiting for you to make a mistake."

Ridge stepped up to the console, resting his large, calloused hands on the metal edge. He stared at the monitor, his dark eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"Let him circle," Ridge muttered, a dark, lethal edge cutting through his tone. "Vicenzo is a dead man walking, and he doesn't even know it yet."

Arthur let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his silver-haired head. He pushed himself up from the chair, leaning heavily on his cane as he stepped closer to Ridge.

"And how exactly do you plan on executing that, boy?" Arthur challenged sharply. "By walking into his warehouse alone? By trying to manage every single perimeter patrol while your wife is upstairs ready to pack her bags over a misplaced medical file?"

Arthur pointed a trembling, weathered finger straight at Ridge’s chest.

"You can't work on your own anymore, father. Not after the explosion months ago,the accident that almost took your life! Your reflexes are slower, your blind spots are wider, you're too old for this.”

“Am I? And you? Too busy making up to your sulking wife after she found out about your distrust in her.”

The words hit the room like a physical blow.

Ridge didn't flinch. But his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked visibly in his cheek. He remembered the accident that led Arthur to coma, if he hadn't been able to save Arthur on time that day,Vicenzo would be somewhere laughing his ass off for making him an orphan.

"Step back, Arthur," Ridge said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet, razor-sharp whisper.

Arthur stopped, blinking in surprise at the sheer authority radiating from the younger man.

"I mean it," Ridge continued, turning his head to look the old man dead in the eye. "Step back from the operations. You took a bullet to the shoulder years ago, and your knee gives out every time it rains. You can't run field ops anymore, and I won't let you try. I can handle it."

"Ridge—"

"No. Listen to me," Ridge interrupted, his voice rising, carrying the unyielding weight of an apex predator backing his claim. "I want a happy home. I want my wife to look at me without suspicion, I want my son to grow up without looking over his shoulder, and I want my family safe. But I will never have peace as long as Vicenzo and Damien are breathing air in this city."
