Chapter 26

The sound of the slap echoed through the room, and Nick's face stung from the impact. But it was nothing compared to the pain he felt in his heart. He had never meant to hurt Kate, and he knew he had a lot of work to do to make things right. But he was willing to do whatever it took to repair the damage he had caused.

"I understand," he said, his voice soft. "I deserve that. I won't ask you to forgive me right now, but I hope that one day you'll be able to."

"I don't know if that's possible," Kate said

Kate sat down across from Larry, her emotions still running high. "I need to talk to you about something," she said, her voice shaky. "I found out that Nick has a daughter."

Larry's eyes widened, and he sat up straighter in his chair. "What?" he asked, disbelief evident in his voice. "Are you sure?"

"I'm sure," Kate said. "I saw a photo of him with her, and there's no doubt that she's his daughter. But he never told me about her."

Larry looked at Kate, his face full of concern. "That's a serious

"Do you think he was trying to hide her from you?" Larry asked, his brow furrowed. "Or do you think there's another explanation?"

Kate considered the question, trying to put herself in Nick's shoes. "I don't know," she said. "But I don't think he would have deliberately kept this from me. I just don't understand why he wouldn't have told me."

"Have you talked to him about it?" Larry asked. "Or are you just speculating?”

"I have talked to him," Kate said. "I just found out, and I'm still trying to process it. But I don't know if I can trust him after this. How can I be sure that he's not keeping other secrets from me?"

"That's a valid concern," Larry said. "But it's also possible that there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of this. It's possible that he had his reasons for keeping this from you. I know it's hard to trust him right now, but I think you need to hear him out before you make

"I understand what you're saying," Kate said. "And I know you're right. But it's hard not to feel hurt and betrayed. And even if he has a good explanation, I'm not sure I'll be able to get past this."

"I know it's hard," Larry said, his voice gentle. "But I also know that you love Nick and that you've built a life together. Don't you think he deserves a chance to explain himself?"

Kate sighed, feeling conflicted. She knew that Larry was right, but her emotions were still raw. "I just don't know if I can

"Do you know who the mother is?" Larry asked, his question gentle but probing. "Do you know anything about the circumstances surrounding the child's birth?"

Kate shook her head. "I don't know anything," she said. "I don't even know the girl's name. All I know is what I saw in the photo. And I don't know if I can bear to ask Nick about it."

"I understand that it's difficult," Larry said. "But I think it's important that you get all the information you can before you make any decisions. You don't want to act rashly and regret

As soon as Kate left, Larry collapsed back in his chair, a fit of laughter overtaking him. He couldn't believe the turn of events that had just unfolded in his office. He knew that Kate was feeling hurt and confused, but he also knew that there was a good chance that Nick had a reasonable explanation for everything. He just hoped that Kate would be willing to listen to him.

As he wiped the tears of laughter from his eyes, he thought to himself, "This is why I love my job."

Kate paced the living room, her thoughts racing. She knew that Nick would be home soon, and she was unsure of how to approach him. She didn't want to come across as angry or accusatory, but she also didn't want to hide her feelings. She was still trying to make sense of everything that had happened.

She heard the front door open and close, and she turned to face Nick as he walked into the living room. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for the conversation to come.

"Who is the mother?" Kate asked, her voice growing more insistent. "I need you to tell me."

Nick hesitated, his hands trembling. He knew that he needed to be honest with her, but he was terrified of the consequences. "It's... it's Jane," he said, his voice barely audible.

Kate's face went pale, and she felt as if the room were spinning. "Are you telling me that the mother of your child is that same Jane?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Nick nodded, his eyes filling with tears.

Kate's mind was racing, and she struggled to process what she had just heard. She felt betrayed and hurt, and she didn't know what to say. "How long have you known?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I found out the same time you did," Nick said, his voice heavy with guilt. "I know it's not an excuse, but I was scared to tell you. I was afraid of losing you."

"That's no excuse," Kate said, her voice rising. "You should have told me the truth. How could you keep something like this from me?"
