Chapter 55 - The Rendezvous

Chapter 55 - The Rendezvous

The café was nothing like the glittering world Serena had been dragged into. Tucked into a forgotten corner of the city, it smelled faintly of burnt espresso and damp wood, its windows fogged with condensation from the autumn rain. It wasn’t where billionaires’ lovers or enemies belonged. And maybe that was the point.

Serena tugged her coat tighter, the flash drive still buried deep in her pocket. Her heart beat in jagged rhythms, a constant reminder of the choice she was making. She shouldn’t have come. Every instinct screamed that meeting Isla Moreau—of all people—was a trap. But the text message hadn’t left her head all night. If you want proof Damian’s lying…

Proof.

Proof of what? That he’d manipulated her? That their love was a mask? Or worse—that he’d been playing both sides from the beginning?

The bell above the door chimed. Serena’s chest tightened as Isla walked in.

She was radiant even here, in the dingy light, her beauty sharpened like a blade. Isla wore a cream trench coat belted at her waist, her dark hair slicked into a flawless knot, lips painted a deliberate red. Heads turned. They always did. But her eyes—calm, calculating—were fixed solely on Serena.

“Punctual,” Isla murmured as she slid into the chair across from her. “I respect that.”

Serena stiffened. “Why am I here?”

Isla’s smile was faint, feline. “Because deep down, you already know Damian hasn’t told you the whole truth. I only offered you the chance to see it with your own eyes.”

Her voice was smooth, every word dripping with composure, but Serena caught the flicker beneath it—the hunger to win.

“Start talking,” Serena said, forcing steel into her tone. “And don’t waste my time with games.”

Isla leaned back, crossing her legs. “Straight to business. I admire that. But understand, Serena, truth is never simple. It’s layered, twisted. Damian is not the man he pretends to be for you.”

Serena’s throat tightened. “And what man is he?”

“The same man who ruined families for profit. Who sabotaged competitors and called it strategy. Who bought loyalty like others buy clothes. Your love story—charming as it sounds—was no accident. Damian has been pulling strings long before you knew his name.”

Serena bristled. “I’ve heard this before. From Crane. From the press. Why should I believe you?”

Isla’s smile sharpened. “Because unlike Crane, I don’t need to destroy him for money. I need to destroy him for justice.”

The word hit like a stone. Serena’s eyes narrowed. “Justice?”

Isla reached into her bag. For a heartbeat, Serena’s chest froze—but she pulled out a thin envelope, sliding it across the table. “Read.”

Serena hesitated, then opened it. Inside were copies of documents—emails, bank transfers, contracts with signatures she recognized: Damian’s. Her breath caught as her eyes darted across the words. Payments tied to offshore accounts. Shell companies funneling money into operations she couldn’t fully piece together but recognized as corrupt. And tucked among them, a hospital bill.

Her hands shook. It bore her mother’s name. Paid in full. Months before Serena had ever met Damian.

Her stomach dropped.

Her voice cracked. “Why do you have this?”

Isla leaned forward, her gaze unflinching. “Because I was the one who found it. Because I know what it means. Damian didn’t stumble into your life—he bought his way in. You were part of his vow. His…atonement. And you deserve to know the cost of that.”

Serena’s vision blurred, heat rising to her face. The memory of Damian’s words from the night before slammed into her: Yes, I knew about your mother. Yes, I intervened. But not to manipulate you.

Her hands curled into fists. He hadn’t denied it. He’d justified it.

Isla’s voice softened, almost pitying. “You think he fell in love with you by chance? No. Damian doesn’t do chance. He does strategy. And right now, you’re the final piece on his board.”

Serena swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “Why are you showing me this? If it’s true—why now?”

Isla’s gaze flickered, the mask slipping just enough for Serena to see the fire beneath. “Because Damian’s downfall is inevitable. With or without me, with or without you. But you have a choice. You can burn with him—or you can step away and watch the empire collapse from safety.”

Her heart thudded painfully. “And what? Leave him to you?”

Isla tilted her head, her smile dangerous. “Leave him to the truth. Leave him to the consequences of the shadows he’s hidden behind. I’m offering you freedom, Serena. Freedom from being another casualty in Damian Knight’s war.”

The café’s hum dimmed. Serena’s world tilted. Her fingers gripped the papers so tightly they crumpled. Every word Isla spoke cut against Damian’s desperate pleas, against her own fragile hope that their love was real.

But Isla’s eyes—sharp, merciless—held no doubt.

Serena rose slowly, her chair scraping the floor. “You want me to believe you. You want me to betray him.”

Isla stood as well, smoothing her coat, her perfume lingering like smoke. “Not betray. Choose. There’s a difference.”

Serena’s throat tightened. “And if I don’t?”

Isla’s smile turned cold. “Then you’ll discover that Damian Knight isn’t the only one who knows how to play dirty.”

The bell above the café door chimed again as Isla walked out into the rain, leaving Serena standing amid the fogged windows and the stale smell of espresso, the papers trembling in her hand.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Damian lit up the screen.

“Where are you? We need to talk. Don’t shut me out, Serena.”

Serena stared at it, her pulse pounding. Isla’s warning echoed in her head. You’re the final piece on his board.

Torn between love and betrayal, safety and fire, Serena realized the choice Isla had laid before her wasn’t about Damian at all.

It was about who Serena was willing to become.

And for the first time, she wasn’t sure she wanted the answer.
