Chapter 52 - The Passenger Seat
Chapter 52 - The Passenger Seat
The night air wrapped around Serena like a noose, tightening with every second she hesitated. Damian’s hand hung between them, open, trembling—not the hand of the ruthless billionaire everyone feared, but of a man terrified of losing her. Behind him, the club’s neon lights bled crimson and gold, casting him in colors that looked almost… human.
And then there was Crane. Reclined in the backseat of the sleek black car, shadows kissing the edges of his smirk, his eyes glinted with something dangerous and inviting. His hand rested on the open door, a gesture of welcome—or entrapment.
“Serena,” Damian’s voice cracked, raw and desperate. “Don’t get in that car. Whatever he’s telling you, it’s twisted. He’ll destroy you just to get to me.”
Crane’s chuckle floated out like smoke. “Destroy her? No, Damian. She’s smarter than that. Smarter than you give her credit for. She wants answers, not excuses. And I’ll give them to her. All she has to do is sit down.”
Serena’s heart hammered so loudly she could barely hear either of them. Her grip tightened on the envelope, the photos inside digging into her palm like thorns. Isla’s father, alive. Damian’s silence. Crane’s taunting half-truths.
She whispered to herself, barely audible, “I just want the truth.”
Damian stepped forward, his hand brushing her arm. “Then ask me. Not him. Me.” His eyes were molten, pleading. “Don’t let him wedge himself between us. Don’t let him take you from me.”
The sincerity in his voice cracked something in her chest, but so did the memory of every lie he’d told, every secret he’d sworn was nothing, every time she’d begged for honesty and gotten shadows instead.
Her breath came out ragged. “Then why didn’t you tell me he was alive, Damian? Why didn’t you trust me with that?”
His face twisted with pain. “Because I was trying to protect you. Protect us.”
Crane’s laugh was sharp as broken glass. “Hear that? Protection. What a pretty word for manipulation. He doesn’t protect, Serena. He cages. He decides which truths you deserve and which ones he’ll bury.”
Serena’s pulse spiked. The car’s leather interior gleamed under the streetlamp, cool and dangerous. Damian’s hand—warm, human, flawed—was still outstretched. Both men waited, their worlds colliding inside her chest.
She took a step forward. Damian’s eyes flared with hope. But then, with a shuddering breath, she pivoted—toward the car.
Damian’s voice shattered. “Serena, no—”
Her hand gripped the doorframe, the cool metal biting into her palm as she slid into the passenger seat. The leather hugged her, suffocating and intoxicating all at once.
Crane’s smile widened like a hunter’s when the trap snaps shut. “Wise choice.” He tapped the glass, and the window slid up, sealing Damian’s desperate face outside.
Damian slammed his fist against the glass, his shout muffled as the car lurched forward. Serena’s heart splintered at the sight—his figure shrinking, swallowed by distance—but she couldn’t look away until the night pulled him from her view.
The car hummed through the city, the silence inside thicker than smoke. Crane poured himself a drink from the minibar, the ice clinking like punctuation in the tension. He turned, offering her a glass.
She shoved it away. “Don’t toy with me. If you’ve got answers, say them. Now.”
He leaned back, savoring her fire. “Straight to business. I like that. But answers have a price, Serena. And you’ve already paid part of it by stepping into this car.”
She folded her arms, nails digging into her skin. “What do you want from me?”
His smirk faltered just slightly, revealing a flicker of something colder beneath. “What I’ve always wanted. To watch Damian Wolfe bleed. And you, my dear, might be the key.”
Her stomach twisted. “I’m not your weapon.”
He tilted his head. “No. You’re sharper than that. You’re leverage.”
Her throat tightened. “Then why the photos? Why show me this if all you want is to use me?”
Crane’s eyes glinted. “Because Damian’s empire isn’t built on truth. It’s built on corpses he buried and lies he sold as loyalty. That man in the pictures? Isla’s father? He isn’t just alive—he’s the rot at the core of Wolfe Enterprises. And Damian’s silence… well, it’s not the silence of innocence. It’s complicity.”
Serena’s stomach dropped. “Complicity in what?”
Crane leaned forward, his voice low, sharp as a blade. “In the kind of deals that make men vanish. In the kind of choices that stain a family name forever. Do you really think Graham Wolfe groomed his grandson to inherit an empire without dirtying his hands?”
Serena shook her head, refusing the words even as they clawed at her chest. “No. Damian… he’s not—”
“Isn’t he?” Crane cut in, his eyes narrowing. “How many times has he begged you to look the other way? To believe him without proof? How many nights has he said, Trust me—only for you to find another secret in the morning?”
Her breath hitched. Every moment came rushing back—Isla’s smug smirks, Damian’s evasions, the tabloids, the deals she never understood.
Crane slid a small flash drive across the seat between them. “The truth you crave is on here. Proof of everything. Proof of Damian Wolfe’s real empire.”
Serena stared at it, the tiny piece of plastic radiating more weight than the envelope in her hands. She reached out, her fingertips grazing its surface—then pulled back.
“What’s the catch?” she whispered.
Crane smiled, teeth gleaming in the dark. “Only that once you see the truth, you can’t unsee it. And you’ll never look at him the same way again.”
Her throat burned. Her hands trembled. The car slowed, the city lights flickering past as if holding its breath with her.
She turned to the window, watching Damian’s reflection flicker in her mind—his outstretched hand, his desperate eyes, his silence.
The flash drive sat between her and Crane like a ticking bomb.
With a shaking breath, Serena reached for it.
And Crane’s smirk widened.
