Chapter 42 - The Offer on the Table

Chapter 42 - The Offer on the Table

Serena’s heels clicked softly against the polished marble floor of Crane Global’s headquarters. The towering glass building loomed over her like a fortress of secrets, every gleaming surface reflecting her image back in fractured pieces. She felt small, insignificant—a storm-tossed figure caught in a game far bigger than she ever meant to play.

She shouldn’t have come. She knew it. Yet here she was, standing in the lion’s den.

A receptionist, sleek and efficient, led her to Nathaniel’s office. “He’s been expecting you,” the woman said, a polite smile masking sharp curiosity.

Serena’s throat tightened. Of course he has.

The double doors swung open, revealing Nathaniel Crane seated behind a vast black desk. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed him, the city skyline stretched out like his personal kingdom. He rose slowly, a practiced show of power, his smile charming and predatory all at once.

“Serena.” He gestured to the chair across from him. “I’m glad you came.”

She hesitated, then sat, spine stiff, clutching her bag as if it were a shield. “This isn’t a social call, Nathaniel. Say what you need to say.”

He chuckled softly, pouring two glasses of water and sliding one toward her. “Direct. I like that.” He leaned back, studying her. “The world thinks they know you. Damian’s fragile little bride. The girl caught in a scandal. But I see something else.”

Her jaw tightened. “And what’s that?”

“Potential.” He let the word linger, heavy with implication. “You’re wasted at Damian’s side. He’ll drag you down with him when the empire crumbles. But with me…” His eyes gleamed. “With me, you could stand in the light instead of hiding in his shadow.”

Serena’s pulse quickened, her chest burning. “You’re using me as a pawn in your war against him. Don’t dress it up as anything else.”

Nathaniel tilted his head, almost amused. “Of course it’s a war. But pawns don’t get invited to the table, Serena. Queens do.”

The words sliced through her. She wanted to throw them back at him, to walk out and slam the door—but her legs remained rooted.

Because a small, broken part of her whispered: What if he’s right?

Meanwhile, across town, Damian stormed into a boardroom filled with executives, the weight of headlines bearing down on him. His tie hung loose, his eyes bloodshot from another sleepless night.

“Damage control isn’t working,” one board member announced. “The Crane scandal is bleeding us dry. The investors are nervous.”

Damian slammed his hand on the table. “I’ll fix it.”

“How?” another pressed. “Serena’s name is poison in the press right now. If she’s seen with Crane again—”

“She won’t be,” Damian cut in, though his voice betrayed uncertainty. He rubbed his temples, picturing her face, the silence between them widening like a canyon.

But deep down, he feared he was already losing her.

Back in Nathaniel’s office, the conversation sharpened.

“You don’t have to answer now,” Nathaniel said smoothly. “But know this: with me, you’ll have protection, influence, freedom. You can rebuild your reputation on your terms. With Damian, you’ll always be the scandal, the liability, the girl he keeps out of sight until the cameras are off.”

Serena flinched. The words dug into her deepest insecurities, ones she’d tried to bury. She thought of the interview that broke her, of the headlines that painted her as Damian’s mistake, of the board whispering that she was dragging him down.

Her hands curled into fists in her lap. “You make it sound like I’d be trading cages—his for yours.”

Nathaniel leaned forward, his voice low and deliberate. “Not a cage. A throne. You just have to decide whether you’re ready to sit on it.”

The room felt suffocating. The city below glimmered with indifferent light, the world carrying on as if her life weren’t teetering on the edge of collapse.

Her phone buzzed in her bag. She didn’t need to look to know it was Damian.

Nathaniel’s eyes flicked to the sound, then back to her. “You don’t have to answer him.”

For a long moment, Serena sat frozen, her heart a frantic drumbeat in her ears. She was torn between two men, two paths—neither of which felt safe, both of which could destroy her.

Her hand trembled as she reached for the phone. She almost pressed answer. Almost.

But Nathaniel’s final words stopped her cold.

“If you walk out of here without hearing me out, Serena,” he said softly, “you’ll regret it. Because Damian won’t save you this time. He can’t.”

The threat—or was it a promise?—hung in the air, coiling around her like smoke.

She swallowed hard, pulse pounding, her choice suspended in the silence between them.

And then, slowly, deliberately, Nathaniel slid a sealed envelope across the table toward her.

“Inside is everything you need to know about Damian Wolfe’s secrets,” he said. “Read it… and then tell me who deserves your loyalty.”

Serena stared at the envelope, her hands hovering inches away, the weight of the decision pressing down like stone.

She knew opening it would change everything.

And she wasn’t sure she was ready for the truth.
